SHORT COMMUNICATIONS 327 At the Missouri site, eagles had access to large numbers of crippled and dead geese, which presumably were the primary source oflead shot. In South Dakota, Steenhof(1976) reported finding waterfowl remains in 285 of 363 egested pellets including 10 (2.7%) with lead shot. Based upon her observations, she concluded eagles obtained most of the waterfowl in upland fields. Likewise, at our Nebraska site, eagles ate waterfowl that had been feeding in upland fields (obtained by kleptoparasitizing other raptors [Jorde and Lingle, in press]). In March 1980, they also scavenged waterfowl that had died of avian cholera (Lingle and Krapu 1986). Infrequent ingestion of lead shot by Bald Eagles in Nebraska probably stems from a low incidence of lead shot among waterfowl wintering along the Platte and North Platte rivers. The frequency of occurrence of lead shot in wintering waterfowl in Nebraska is not known; however, only about 1% of waterfowl wintering in the Texas High Plains region during the same period had lead shot in their digestive tracts (Wallace et al. 1983). It is probable that field-feeding Mallards obtained in lightly hunted uplands contain fewer lead shot than cripples or segments of the population feeding principally in wetlands where hunting activity and lead shot contamination arc likely to be concentrated. Woodland Garden Plants The present-day cultivation of large areas of single annual crops such as wheat might seem, on the surface, to be a very productive and efficient use of land (average wheat yields this century have increased more than three-fold to over 3 tons per acre). When other factors are taken into account, however, it can be argued that this is a very unproductive and unsustainable use of the land. A woodland, on the other hand, might seem to be a very unproductive area for human food (unless you happen to like eating acorns). By choosing the right species, however, a woodland garden can produce a larger crop of food than the same area of wheat, will require far less work to manage it and will be able to be sustainably harvested without harm to the soil or the environment in general. I do not intend to go into any more details of the pros and cons of annuals versus perennials here. If you would like more information on this subject then please see our leaflet Why Perennials. One of the main reasons why a woodland garden can be so productive is that such a wide range of plants can be grown together, making much more efficient use of the land. The greater the diversity of plants being grown together then the greater the overall growth of plant matter there is. Thus you can have tall growing trees with smaller trees and shrubs that can tolerate some shade growing under them. Climbing plants can make their own ways up the trees and shrubs towards the light, whilst shade- tolerant herbaceous plants and bulbs can grow on the woodland floor. -

La morfología, anatomía y química fueron revisadas y se entrega una descripción del material encontrado, su hábitat y distribución. Patrones de riqueza y distribución de la flora vascular en la Cordillera de la Costa de Valdivia, Osorno y Llanquihue, Chile Distribution and species richness patterns of the vascular flora in the Coastal Range of Valdivia, Osorno and Llanquihue, Chile CECILIA SMITH-RAMÍREZ, PATRICIO PLISCOFF, SEBASTIÁN TEILLIER Y ELIZABETH BARRERA Abstract This study assesses the patterns of vascular plant species richness and their distri- bution in the Coastal Range of Valdivia, Osorno and Llanquihue, with the aim of proposing conservation priorities, based on areas with high floristic singularity and richness. The analysis considered or field collections (March 2000, October 2001 and January 2002), data from the literature, and records in the electronic database of the Flora of Chile. We estimated a total of 576 vascular plant species for the Coastal Range in the three provinces studied. Each species was assigned a hypothetical distribution area, based on its association with altitude and habitat types, inferred from the literature and verified on the ground. Distribution maps for each species were generated with GIS. Two types of maps were produces: a his- torical reconstruction based on the assumption of a continuous forest cover, and a contemporary one considering the present land cover types, resulting from human activities. We identified forest types sampled that differed greatly from other regional forest types or represent distributional limits. As a first priority, we recommend the conservation of remnant forests in the eastern slopes of the Coastal Range, because they contain a higher species richness than the western slopes. In second place, we recommend that new protected areas should be designed to include a broad alti- tudinal gradient on both slopes of the Coastal Range, because different altitudes harbor different plant species assemblages. -

Peat, Andrew Clarke & Peter Convey 5 6 British Antarctic Survey, Natural Environment Research Council, High Cross, Madingley Rd, 7 Cambridge, CB3 0ET, UK. 8 E-mail: [email protected] 9 __________________________________________________________________________ 10 11 ABSTRACT 12 13 Aim To establish how well the terrestrial flora of the Antarctic has been sampled, how well 14 the flora is known, and to determine the major patterns in diversity and biogeography. 15 16 Location Antarctica south of 60°S, together with the South Sandwich Islands, but excluding 17 South Georgia, Bouvetøya and the periantarctic islands. 18 19 Methods Plant occurrence data were collated from herbarium specimens and literature 20 records, and assembled into the Antarctic Plant Database. Distributional patterns were 21 analysed using a geographic information system. Biogeographic patterns were determined 22 with a variety of multivariate statistics. 23 24 Results Plants have been recorded from throughout the Antarctic including all latitudes 25 between 60°S and 86°S. Species richness declines with latitude along the Antarctic 26 Peninsula, but there was no evidence for a similar cline in Victoria Land and the 27 Transantarctic mountains. MDS ordinations showed that the species composition of the 28 South Orkney, South Shetland Islands and the north western Antarctic Peninsula are very 29 similar to each other, as are the floras of different regions in continental Antarctica. However 30 they also suggest that the eastern Antarctic Peninsula flora is more similar to the flora of the 31 southern Antarctic Peninsula than to the continental flora (with which it has traditionally been 32 linked).
