When in a gathering, Aridjis, spoke of the need to hide himself from view, to stay away from others, to avoid conversation. I loved this: ldquo;But when I couldnrsquo;t find the words to slip away, or a view to distract me, unmoved and subdued, I would summon up my forces to hide my boredom or my secret desire to slap that person in the face and depart.rdquo;This is story after story, person after person, one leading to the next, encapsulating a lifetime.     Appeal to the Chinese government concerning Liu Xiaobo and his wife Liu Xia Nobel Peace Prize Laureat Liu Xiaobo has been diagnosed with liver cancer. His wife, Liu Xia, who has been under house arrest for several years, is also gravely ill. They have the wish to travel to Germany so they can receive medical care. Their wish to leave China is so strong that Liu Xiaobo has stated that – if he is to die – he does not want to do so on Chinese soil. Liu Xia also no longer wishes to live there. Time is running. We urge the Chinese government to grant Liu Xiaobo and Liu Xia the freedom to leave the country! Der Friedensnobelpreisträger Liu Xiaobo ist an Leberkrebs erkrankt. The caliber and scope of this festival are unparalleled: the high participation of world-famous authors, range of unusual events, level of international diversity, intercultural discussions, showcasing of up-and-coming talents from all continents, focus on literature for children and young adults, and, since 2011, increased presentation of comics and graphic novels, emphasis on political issues, as well as cross-genre approach and orientation towards topical scientific subjects, initiation of special projects (such as the Worldwide Readings), as well as visitors’ enthusiastic feedback and – just as important – engaging hospitality, all reflect the spirit of Berlin and the festival’s unique approach.     Berlin in English-language Fiction, 1989-2009: Spatial Representation and the Dynamics of Memory Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Paul O’Hanrahan May 2014 Berlin in English-language Fiction, 1989-2009: Spatial Representation and the Dynamics of Memory Paul O’Hanrahan, University of Liverpool Abstract This thesis sets out to define the field of Berlin English-language fiction since 1989 by identifying its distinctive forms of representation of space and memory. The post-Wall Berlin thriller can be characterised as a literary category based on genre combinations and a turn to the past. Distinct spatial iconographies emerge in thrillers representing Nazi Berlin, post-war „rubble Berlin‟ and the divided Cold War period; even the twenty-first-century city is related to 1920s cabarets. Applying Huyssen‟s observations on Berlin as a palimpsest of dynamic relations between past and present, I show that the Berlin thriller‟s concern with memory is responsive to contemporary uncertainties in the decades following the fall of the Wall. I proceed to compare British perspectives on divided Berlin in novels with thriller associations by Ian McEwan, John le Carré and James Lasdun. I posit that British involvement in the shared governance of divided Berlin during the Cold War era has fostered a special nostalgia for the city which has influenced the intimacy with which these authors represent the city. Through analysis of spatial relations with both parts of the divided city, I reveal unexpected British affinities with East Berlin, ambivalent memories of the Wall and regret at its fall.
