Laura Davis Wins Gold!
Cecil Andrews News SPECIAL EDITION: TERM 4 2015 School Ball Kadence wins Cockburn Idol Girls in S.T.E.M VET Awards Relay for Life Visit from the Premier In the spotlight: Laura Davis wins gold! cecilandrewsshs.wa.edu.au Visit from the Premier Community consultation last year about public secondary schooling in the Armadale area showed that local parents wanted to see the best possible education provided for their children, with a range of opportunities for them to learn and grow. The State Government announced in a visit to the school by the Premier Colin Barnett that Cecil Andrews Senior High School would have an academic focus, with changes to be in place for the start of the 2017 school year. A new building will be constructed for science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects – including laboratories, a lecture theatre and preparation areas. Principal Stella Jinman said that Cecil Andrews Senior High School welcomed a fresh vision. “We’re passionate about education – my team of educators are very dedicated and hard-working,” Ms Jinman said. “We’re delighted that the Government is investing in us, in an area of need. I am delighted Cecil Andrews has been recognised as a hub for learning in the community. This funding will see a further expansion of our high quality teaching and learning programs. The change of focus provides opportunities to hand select the very best specialist academic staff for the extension program for Year 7s to Year 10s, ensuring the very best outcomes for our students. “I think it will be a very modern, 21st century look at what can be done, thinking about an imaginative and creative model of education that is responsive to the community. -

Eduardo Galeano – ¡Presente!
Eduardo Galeano – ¡Presente! Eduardo Galeano, the world-renowned leftist Uruguayan journalist and writer made famous with the publication in 1971 of his book The Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent, died today at the age of 74 in Montevideo, Uruguay, where he lived. Long admired as a journalist, with his three-volume Memory of Fire in 1982, Galeano also became known as a writer of non-fiction prose who might be compared to writers of fiction such as Gabriel García Márquez, author of the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude or Isabel Allende who wrote House of the Spirits. Like their novels, his trilogy captures the real spirit of Latin America’s magical history. Born Eduardo Germán María Hughes Galeano in Montevideo on September 3, 1940, Galeano began his career as a journalist in the early 1960s working as a correspondent for Sol and then as an editor for Marcha, which published such writers as Mario Vargas Llosa and Mario Benedetti. When a rightwing military coup took power in Uruguay in 1973, Galeano was jailed and subsequently went into exile, first in Argentina, where he edited Crisis, and then in Spain where he wrote his trilogy Memory of Fire (Genesis, Faces and Masks, and Century of the Wind). Memory of Fire mixed history and journalism in vignettes and biographical sketches written in a creative prose style that reminded American readers of John Dos Passos’ 1930s classic U.SA. triology (The 42nd Parallel, 1919, and The Big Money). Open Veins of Latin America was a detailed, systematic, and sustained attack on European and U.S. -

That year the network was awarded financial support from NordForsk for three years, and a network project was launched with the title ’Towards a Common Past? Conflicting Memories and Competitive Historical Narratives in Europe after 1989.’ The network presently includes about 45 researchers (both senior and PhD candidates). This book includes a selection of papers given by members of the NordForsk network during two workshop meetings in 2009 and 2010. Its aim is to demonstrate the variety of subjects and empirical cases that our network members deal with, as well as the range of disciplines they represent. The contributions to the volume are united by the authors’ keen research interest in the functions and dynamics of cultural memory.
