Muko city, Kyoto 1 Section 1 Nature and(Geographical Environment and Weather) 1. Geographical Environment Muko city is located at the southwest part of the Kyoto Basin. Traveling the Yodo River upward from the Osaka Bay through the narrow area between Mt. Tenno, the famous warfield of Battle of Yamazaki that determined the future of this country, and Mt. Otoko, the home of Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine, one of the three major hachimangu shrines in Japan, the city sits where three rivers of the Katsura, the Uji and the Kizu merge and form the Yodo River. On west, Kyoto Nishiyama Mountain Range including Mt. Oshio lays and the Katsura River runs on our east. We share three boundaries with Kyoto city - the northern and western boundaries with Nishikyo-ku, and the eastern boundary with Minami-ku and Fushimi-ku. Across the southern boundary is Nagaokakyo city abutting Oyamazaki-cho which is the neighbor of Osaka Prefecture. The city is approximiately 2km from east to west and approximiately 4km from south to north covering the 7.72km2 area. This makes us the third smallest city in Japan after Warabi city and Komae city. This divides the city coverage into three distinctive parts of the hilly area in the west formed by the Osaka Geo Group which is believed to be cumulated several tens of thousands to several million years ago, the terrace in the center, and the alluvial plain in the east formed by the Katsura River and the Obata River. -

Andrei Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Columbia University 2016 © 2016 Talia J.Andrei All rights reserved Abstract Mapping Sacred Spaces: Representations of Pleasure and Worship in Sankei Mandara Talia J. Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively). -

It is a serial cultural property that has eight component parts, all of which are linked to the worship of a sacred island that has continued from the fourth century to the present day. These component parts include Okitsu-miya of Munakata Taisha, which encompasses the entire island of Okinoshima and its three attendant reefs, located in the strait between the Japanese archipelago and the Korean peninsula; Okitsu- miya Yohaisho and Nakatsu-miya of Munakata Taisha, located on the island of Oshima; and Hetsu-miya of Munakata Taisha and the Shimbaru-Nuyama Mounded Tomb Group, located on the main island of Kyushu. Okinoshima has unique archaeological sites that have survived nearly intact, providing a chronological account of how ancient rituals based on nature worship developed from the fourth to the ninth centuries. It is of outstanding archaeological value also because of the number and quality of offerings discovered there, underscoring the great importance of the rituals and serving as evidence of their evolution over a period of 500 years, in the midst of a process of dynamic overseas exchange in East Asia. -

Zeh, Ph.D., Dean, Graduate School May, 2017 i Abstract Shinto is a native Japanese religion with a history that goes back thousands of years. Because of its close ties to Japanese culture, and Shinto’s strong emphasis on place in its practice, it does not seem to be the kind of religion that would migrate to other areas of the world and convert new practitioners. However, not only are there examples of Shinto being practiced outside of Japan, the people doing the practice are not always of Japanese heritage. The Tsubaki Grand Shrine of America is one of the only fully functional Shinto shrines in the United States and is run by the first non-Japanese Shinto priest. This thesis looks at the community of practice that surrounds this American shrine and examines how membership is negotiated through action. There are three main practices that form the larger community: language use, rituals, and Aikido. Through participation in these activities members engage with an American Shinto community of practice. -

Morley for the degree of Master ofArts in the Interdisciplinary Studies Program: Asian Studies to be taken June 2009 Title: THE GODDESSES' SHRINE FAMILY: THE MUNAKATA THROUGH THE KAMAKURA ERA This thesis presents an historical study ofthe Kyushu shrine family known as the Munakata, beginning in the fourth century and ending with the onset ofJapan's medieval age in the fourteenth century. The tutelary deities ofthe Munakata Shrine are held to be the progeny ofthe Sun Goddess, the most powerful deity in the Shinto pantheon; this fact speaks to the long-standing historical relationship the Munakata enjoyed with Japan's ruling elites. Traditional tropes ofJapanese history have generally cast Kyushu as the periphery ofJapanese civilization, but in light ofrecent scholarship, this view has become untenable. Drawing upon extensive primary source material, this thesis will provide a detailed narrative ofMunakata family history while also building upon current trends in Japanese historiography that locate Kyushu within a broader East Asian cultural matrix and reveal it to be a central locus of cultural production on the Japanese archipelago. -

IKEGAYA, MAKOTO, M.A. Geographic Study of Historic Preservation: Evolving Cultural Landscape and Development of Modern Japan. (2013) Directed by Dr. Susan M. Walcott. 131 pp. The development of new architectural styles, infrastructure and construction materials in the Meiji period (1868-1912 CE), is tied to the creation of a modern Japanese identity. Despite recent developments toward preserving important historic property in Japan, many lesser known historical and vernacular sites continue to be ignored and have been ruined over time. An academic study of historic preservation is rare in Japan and in geography. The main purpose of this research is to clarify the role of historic preservation and to identify it with the rise of Japanese nationalism, economic development, and construction of the built environment during the pivotal Meiji period. The natural setting and history of Japan was examined and strategic plans for potential improvement in the field of Japanese historic preservation in the future are illustrated using case studies of the preservation projects of the Ise Jingu, Horyu-ji, the Tomioka Silk Mill, the Tokyo Station, and the Meiji Mura. Yoshino Administration Division, Transportation Department, Kyushu Railway Company, Japan Abstract With the partial opening of the Shin-Yatsushiro to Kagoshima-Chuo section of the Kyushu Shinkansen in March 2004, management of the connection to the conventional line limited express trains at Shin-Yatsushiro Station. It became important to provide a service in the Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo section that was comparable to that of the transport system up to then. For that reason, station facilities were made to enable transfers between the Shinkansen and conventional line trains at the same platform. In addition, linkage functions between the Shinkansen and conventional line dispatch systems were set up as follows. - Referencing of conventional line timetables when considering revised Shinkansen timetables - Adding conventional line connection management functions to the Shinkansen programmed route control - Adding conventional line occupation display to the Shinkansen line occupation display and route control monitor - Displaying the conventional line timetable (planned and actual) on the Shinkansen timetable display monitor - Sharing of operation information provision between the Shinkansen and conventional lines - Guidance of trains and operation, including information relating to conventional line train connections on indicators for passengers The work is supported by means such as allowing dispatchers to identify the timetable -
