Rock Music of the 1960’s Continued….. ò In the sixties rock music comes of age and dominates the popular music charts. ò Elvis Presley continues to score hits in the early part of the decade, but the music continues to diversify. ò The Motown, Stax and Atlantic labels bring more African- American artists to the forefront of the pop charts. ò By 1964 American artists are sharing the top of the charts with U.K. bands led by the Beatles and The Rolling Stones. ò In the U.S. garage bands emerge, inspired by the British Invasion sound. ò Sixties songwriting moves beyond pop love songs and begins to include social consciousness and political statements. ò In the latter half of the decade psychedelic music reflects the growing hippie culture. ò Bubblegum music is created to generate radio friendly pop singles. ò A harder rock sound emerges and sows the seeds for heavy metal. What about T.V.? ò Just like in the Nixon/Kennedy debates, T.V. plays a major role. ò Television becomes a major force in rock music as networks try to attract a younger audience. ò American Bandstand continues with it's afternoon, clean-cut, teen idol format, while the Ed Sullivan Show and other TV variety shows begin showcasing rock bands in prime time. The Outdoor Music Festival ò In the late sixties outdoor rock music festivals begin. ò First with 1967's Monterey Pop Festival which attracts 55,000 fans per day to a three day concert. ò In the summer of 1969 the Woodstock Music and Art Fair draws 500,000 people to a three day concert in Bethel, New York.

LONG SYNOPSIS When a precocious 13 -year-old girl in a sleepy suburban town put a Sears electric guitar at the top of her Christmas list in 1971, no one could have predicted how the gift would change the course of history. Joan Jett wanted to make some noise. She wanted to start a band. An all -girl band. Never mind that the only viable path forward for aspiring female artists in the male-dominated music industry was as a singer -songwriter on an acoustic guitar. Jett wanted to plug in, and nothing was going to stop her. Bad Reputation chronicles the life of Joan Jett, from her early teenage years as founding member of The Runaways to her enduring presence over four decades later as a rock ‘n’ roll icon. Following the break- up of The Runaways, Jett met songwriting partner and producer Kenny Laguna, and formed Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. After being rejected by twenty three labels, Laguna and Jett formed Blackhearts Records, selling records out of the trunk of Kenny’s Cadillac.

DAN DEACON MYSTIC FAMILIAR OVERVIEW Dan Deacon, composer and performer, returns with his new studio album, Mystic Familiar. Following 2015’s Gliss Riffer, Dan embarked on a whirlwind of collaborative projects, scoring eight fi lms, including Rat Film and Time Trial; collaborating with choreographer Justin Peck on dance piece The Times Are Racing; producing and co-writing with Ed Schrader’s Music Beat; and performing with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. While fulfi lling, these projects all lacked one instrument: Dan’s voice. During this time, solo writing became his personal oasis, taking on an exploratory new direction informed by his newly adopted therapeutic practices of self-compassion and mindfulness, daily prompts from Brian Eno’s Oblique Strategies, and meditation to access an inner well of creativity as discussed by David Lynch in Catching the Big Fish.
