This enthusiasm manifested itself in literature and art in the movements referred to as classicism and neoclassicism. The founda- tions of contemporary culture were identified in the culture of Greek antiquity and there was an attempt to learn more about and even revive the latter. These efforts manifested themselves in the themes, motifs and forms employed in literature and art. How- ever, European philhellenism also had an effect in the political sphere. Numerous societies were founded to support the cause of Greek independence during the Greek War of Independence, and volunteers went to Greece to join the fight against the Ottoman Empire. Conversely, the emergence of the Enlightenment in Greece was due at least in part to the Greek students who studied at European universities and brought Enlightenment ideas with them back to Greece. It focuses primarily on the activities of the Russian Second Army - a force quartered in the southern regions of the Russia and designated to conduct military operations against the Ottoman Empire in Europe. Under the leadership of General P. D. Kiselev, the General Staff of this army conducted a thorough research of previous Russo-Turkish wars (1711-1812) and integrated the lessons of these campaigns into a new strategic and tactical doctrine. Ultimately, this research was to result in the formulation of an innovative new Turkish war plan which proposed that the Russian army, for the first time in its history, cross the Balkan mountain range and march on Constantinople.

It emphasizes the role of multiple markets based on imported and local trade goods and describes the different ethnicities involved in foreign trade, focusing on merchants of Greek origin, their participation in the Philiki Etaireia and their degree of involvement in its organizational mechanisms. I attempt to read the Philiki Etaireia’s development and its influence on the Eastern Question and Russian-Ottoman relations in light of the general political fermentation that was taking part in the Russian Empire, mainly through the creation of secret societies within the Russian army. I believe that the Russian authorities, being involved in the general mobility and movement of ideas, influenced by the Western experiences of the Russian military, had to deal primarily with major political issues that left aside, at least at a regional level, movements of the same character that concerned the Greeks.

He was born in Velestino, Thessaly (1757?), where he received his basic education. His quest for further education took him to Constantinople (1774?) where he was introduced into Phanariot circles. He became a clerk to the noble family of Ypsilantis (1785) and later went to Walla- chia, perhaps having been admitted to Masonic circles. His contact with the Phanariot world, his time spent close to Ka- tartzis, a leading Greek proponent of the Enlightenment, and his knowledge of foreign languages, which enabled him to fol- low European intellectual developments, all served to broaden his horizons.

    Using Luxury and Fashion for constructing a Self-Identity: Ienachiţă Văcărescu’ Case Constanţa Vintilă-Ghiţulescu In the winter of 1782, Ianache Văcărescu, Grand Vistier1 of Wallachia, set out on a secret mission to the Court of Vienna. The two sons of the Phanariote prince Alexander Ypsilantis had run away from home in search of adventure in the wondrous realms of Europe. At the time, Wallachia was under Ottoman domination, and the Prince was directly appointed by the Sultan and integrated in the Ottoman administrative system.2 After the establishment of the Phanariote regime, princes and boyars preferred to avoid crossing the border to the West, although no official interdiction limiting their freedom of movement was ever pronounced. In other words, the roads and journeys of the political elite were directed for a century towards the Ottoman Empire. Braşov and Sibiu, in Habsburg Transylvania, were only temporary refuges in times of war, where boyar families might find a safe haven for a matter of months, or on occasion years, depending on the duration of the war and military occupation. The flight of the sons of a Phanariote prince, an Ottoman subject, might be interpreted as a sign of treason, especially if they chose territories hostile to the Ottoman Empire. The punishment for such ‘infidelity’ could range from the exile of the prince to his decapitation. In these circumstances, Vodă Alexander Ypsilantis entrusted his vistiernic and right-hand man, Ianache Văcărescu, with the mission of bringing back his rebellious sons, if possible in great secrecy. Constantine and Dimitrios Ypsilantis had left through Transylvania for Vienna.
