Staging Transcultural Relations: Early Nineteenth-Century British Drama and the Greek War of Independence Alexander Grammatikos, Langara College Abstract Keywords This paper examines two British Romantic dramas written Nineteenth-Century British during the Greek War of Independence and its aftermath: George Drama; Greek War of Burges’s The Son of Erin or the Cause of the Greeks (1823) Independence; British Romantic and John Baldwin Buckstone’s The Maid of Athens; or, the Re- Hellenism; Philhellenism; Lord volt of the Greeks (1829). The paper discusses the plays’ portray- Byron als of transcultural interactions between Greeks and Europeans (Irish and British) and argues that the two dramas encourage audiences to see similarities between themselves and Greeks, while also critiquing British apathy toward the Greeks’ efforts to achieve liberation. Despite Burges’s and Buckstone’s shared support for the Greek war, however, an important difference between the two texts exists: while The Son of Erin maintains a relentless attack on the British government for aligning British politics with Ot- toman policies and remaining indifferent toward the Greek war, The Maid of Athens suggests that Britons who take advantage of Greeks’ subjugation misrepresent Britain’s true feelings about the Greek War of Independence. Place of Multimedia Technics in Contemporary Greek Art In Lucas Samaras Sample Abstract Studies and outputs that are executed by Ancient Greeks in plastic arts have been quite often used as a reference for the West-centered plastic arts aesthetics in the historical process. However, especially in the 20th century (together with intellectual perception that is updated by the effect of social events) radical outputs became more prominent against classical style and many Western artists in their outputs started to show tendency in this direction either cognitively or objectively. -

by Konstantinou, Evangelos Precipitated primarily by the study of ancient Greece, a growing enthusiasm for Greece emerged in Europe from the 18th century. This enthusiasm manifested itself in literature and art in the movements referred to as classicism and neoclassicism. The founda- tions of contemporary culture were identified in the culture of Greek antiquity and there was an attempt to learn more about and even revive the latter. These efforts manifested themselves in the themes, motifs and forms employed in literature and art. How- ever, European philhellenism also had an effect in the political sphere. Numerous societies were founded to support the cause of Greek independence during the Greek War of Independence, and volunteers went to Greece to join the fight against the Ottoman Empire. Conversely, the emergence of the Enlightenment in Greece was due at least in part to the Greek students who studied at European universities and brought Enlightenment ideas with them back to Greece. Birth – Early Years Georgios Lassanis was born in Kozani in 1793.1 At a very early age he lost his father, who was a merchant and was killed on a journey back from Vienna. He received his first education in his birthplace, where he stood out for his performance and brilliance.2 At the age of twenty he went to Budapest and worked at the shop of his compatriot Nikolaos Takiatzis, where he fell in love with his daughter and got engaged to her. To his dismay the girl’s parents married her to another young man from Kozani and Lassanis, deeply hurt by the separation, went to Leipzig to study.3 According to a different version, Lassanis left in 1813 for Leipzig, where he studied at the philosophical school of the local university for four years.
