Χρυσοστόμου Β΄ Θερμά συγχαίρουμε το Ίδρυμα Αρχιεπισκόπου Μακαρίου Γ΄, την Πρε- σβεία της Ελλάδος στην Κύπρο και την Τράπεζα Eurobank EIG Κύπρου για τη συνδιοργάνωση της Έκθεσης «Απ’ τα κόκκαλα βγαλμένη... 190 χρόνια από την Επανάσταση του 1821. Η συμμετοχή της Κύπρου». Η Έκθεση αποτελεί συμβολική απόδοση τιμής και ευγνωμοσύνης προς τους αθάνατους ήρωες της Εθνεγερσίας. Μέσα από τα εκθέματά της, διαγράφει, ακόμη, τη σημαντική συμβολή της νήσου μας στον αγώνα του 1821. Επιβεβαιώνει, ακόμη, η Έκθεση ότι είμαστε ένας λαός με ιστορική μνήμη και με συναίσθηση της σπουδαίας σύστασης του Πο- λύβιου: «μηδεμίαν ἑτοιμοτέραν εἶναι διόρθωσιν τοῖς ἀνθρώποις τῆς τῶν προγεγενημένων πράξεων ἐπιστήμης». Δηλαδή, δεν υπάρ- χει αποτελεσματικότερος τρόπος να αποφεύγουμε τις ασχήμιες και τα λάθη της Ιστορίας, από το να τη μελετούμε και να διδασκόμαστε απ’ αυτήν. Και ακριβώς, μέσα στην κρισιμότητα των καιρών, τους οποίους διέρχεται το εθνικό μας πρόβλημα, το 1821 αποτελεί «αθάνατο κρασί» λεβεντιάς και ελευθερίας. Τονίζουν μερικοί ότι είμαστε λίγοι και αδύνατοι. Γι’ αυτό και θα πρέπει να δούμε την πραγματικότητα. Ο Ίων Δραγούμης, όμως, αντλώντας μη- νύματα και διδάγματα από την Εθνεγερσία, διαμηνύει προς όλους: «Ο καθένας πρέπει να ξέρει ότι σ’ αυτόν έλαχε να σώσει την πατρίδα του. Έτσι, θα προσπαθούν πολλοί και θα την σώσει όποιος μπορεί»! Χαιρετίζοντας την Έκθεση, θα συνεχίσουμε τον αγώνα μέχρι τη δικαίω- ση, εμπνεόμενοι από τη διαβεβαίωση του Αρχιεπισκόπου και Εθνομάρ- τυρα Κυπριανού: «Απ’ τα κόκκαλα βγαλμένη... 190 χρόνια από την Επανάσταση του 1821. 4 Η συμμετοχή της Κύπρου» Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus Greeting by His Βeatitude the Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos IΙ We warmly congratulate the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation, the Embassy of Greece in Cyprus and the Eurobank EFG for organizing the Exhibition «Risen from the sacred bones…190 years from the Greek revolution of 1821 - The contribution of Cyprus». The Exhibition symbolically pays tribute and expresses gratitude to the immortal heroes of the Greek War of Independence. Through its exhibits, it also outlines the important contribution made by our island to the Revolution of 1821. Moreover, the Exhibition reaffirms that our people possess historical memory and are aware of Polyvios’ great advice. “There isn’t a more effective way to avoid improprieties and the mistakes of history from studying and drawing lessons from it”. And indeed in the critical times our national issue is passing through, 1821 is “the immortal wine” of bravery and freedom. Some people claim that we are only a few and week at that. For this reason we have to face reality. Ion Dragoumis, however, drawing teachings from the national revolution sends the message to all of us: “Everyone should know that the duty to save his country fell to his lot. In this way, many will try and our country will be saved from anyone who can”. Welcoming the holding of the Exhibition, we want to reaffirm that we shall continue the struggle for vindication inspired by the words of our national martyr Archbishop Kyprianos: “Risen from the sacred bones... 190 years from the Revolution of 1821. Χοτζάκογλου. Η έκθεση φιλοδοξεί να παρουσιάσει στο κοινό της Κύπρου και ιδιαί- τερα στους νέους μας, την πιο κρίσιμη και αποφασιστική ιστορική πε- ρίοδο του Νεότερου Ελληνισμού, που οδήγησε στην απελευθέρωση της Ελλάδας, από τις παραμονές της Παλιγγενεσίας και τον Ελληνικό Διαφωτισμό έως τη δημιουργία του Ελληνικού κράτους. Παράλληλα προβάλλεται η πολυσχιδής συμμετοχή της Κύπρου στον αγώνα του 1821: την αφύπνιση του Ελληνισμού της Κύπρου, την ενεργό στήριξη των Φιλικών, το μαρτυρικό θάνατο του πρωτομάρτυρα Αρχιεπισκόπου Κυπριανού και τη συμμετοχή Κυπρίων στην Επανάσταση. Θα ήθελα να ευχαριστήσω τους οργανωτικούς φορείς της έκθεσης ζωγραφικής «Απ’ τα κόκκαλα βγαλμένη... 190 χρόνια από την Επανά- «Απ’ τα κόκκαλα βγαλμένη... 190 χρόνια από την Επανάσταση του 1821. 8 Η συμμετοχή της Κύπρου» Embassy of Greece in Cyprus Message by the Ambassador of Greece in Cyprus The exhibition «Risen from the sacred bones…190 years from the Greek Revolution of 1821 - The contribution of Cyprus» is being organised from the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation, in collaboration with Eurobank EFG and the Embassy of Greece from 29 March 2011 to 30 September 2011. The exhibits come mainly from the Collections of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation’s Art Gallery and are accompanied by works and heirloom from the Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus, the Embassy of Greece, the Folk Art Museum and the Silverwork and Goldsmithing museum of the Society of Cyprus Studies, the Arcadian Museum of Ηistory and Art (Levidi Peloponnese) the collection of Theodoulos Theodoulou and Andreas Pitsillides (Lefkosia), as well as books from the personal libraries of Georgios Myaris and professor Charalambos Chotzakoglou. The aim of the exhibition is to present to the Cyprus public and particularly to our youths the most critical and decisive historical period of Modern Hellenism, which led to the liberation of Greece, from the eve of the National Regeneration and the Greek Enlightenment to the creation of the Greek state. At the same time it projects Cyprus’ multi- faceted contribution to the Greek War of Independence: the awakening of the Greeks in Cyprus, the active support given to Filiki Eteria, the martyred death of Archbishop Kyprianos and the participation of Cypriots in the Revolution. I would like to express my thanks to the organisers of the painting exhibition «Risen from the sacred bones…190 years from the Greek Revolution of 1821 - The contribution of Cyprus», the Archbishop “Risen from the sacred bones... 190 years from the Revolution of 1821.     Staging Transcultural Relations: Early Nineteenth-Century British Drama and the Greek War of Independence Alexander Grammatikos, Langara College Abstract Keywords This paper examines two British Romantic dramas written Nineteenth-Century British during the Greek War of Independence and its aftermath: George Drama; Greek War of Burges’s The Son of Erin or the Cause of the Greeks (1823) Independence; British Romantic and John Baldwin Buckstone’s The Maid of Athens; or, the Re- Hellenism; Philhellenism; Lord volt of the Greeks (1829). The paper discusses the plays’ portray- Byron als of transcultural interactions between Greeks and Europeans (Irish and British) and argues that the two dramas encourage audiences to see similarities between themselves and Greeks, while also critiquing British apathy toward the Greeks’ efforts to achieve liberation. Despite Burges’s and Buckstone’s shared support for the Greek war, however, an important difference between the two texts exists: while The Son of Erin maintains a relentless attack on the British government for aligning British politics with Ot- toman policies and remaining indifferent toward the Greek war, The Maid of Athens suggests that Britons who take advantage of Greeks’ subjugation misrepresent Britain’s true feelings about the Greek War of Independence.     by Konstantinou, Evangelos Precipitated primarily by the study of ancient Greece, a growing enthusiasm for Greece emerged in Europe from the 18th century. This enthusiasm manifested itself in literature and art in the movements referred to as classicism and neoclassicism. The founda- tions of contemporary culture were identified in the culture of Greek antiquity and there was an attempt to learn more about and even revive the latter. These efforts manifested themselves in the themes, motifs and forms employed in literature and art. How- ever, European philhellenism also had an effect in the political sphere. Numerous societies were founded to support the cause of Greek independence during the Greek War of Independence, and volunteers went to Greece to join the fight against the Ottoman Empire. Conversely, the emergence of the Enlightenment in Greece was due at least in part to the Greek students who studied at European universities and brought Enlightenment ideas with them back to Greece. Birth – Early Years Georgios Lassanis was born in Kozani in 1793.1 At a very early age he lost his father, who was a merchant and was killed on a journey back from Vienna. He received his first education in his birthplace, where he stood out for his performance and brilliance.2 At the age of twenty he went to Budapest and worked at the shop of his compatriot Nikolaos Takiatzis, where he fell in love with his daughter and got engaged to her. To his dismay the girl’s parents married her to another young man from Kozani and Lassanis, deeply hurt by the separation, went to Leipzig to study.3 According to a different version, Lassanis left in 1813 for Leipzig, where he studied at the philosophical school of the local university for four years.
