– Miss Sarajevo Moroso Racconta: – Miss Sarajevo 2011, Karmelina Martina Design english Moroso racconta: – Miss Sarajevo Moroso racconta: – Miss Sarajevo 2011, Karmelina Martina design Distance and nearness: Udine–Sarajevo 699 km “A city in which East and West have come to rest. This is a city” Ivo Andric, Nobel Laureate for Literature 1961. Folk tradition merges with industrial design Miss Sarajevo, a sofa designed by Karmelina Martina in 2011, represents the meeting of two distant worlds, two (only) apparently contrasting geographic and cultural opposites. This “borderline” sofa has the spontaneous, functional simplicity of folk tradition; of industrial design, it has the smart solutions of mass production and material quality and performance. An Italo–Bosnian designer, Karmelina pours her past into a contemporary design and reinstates its positive value. Its female energy re–emerges, making tangible the hope which U2 and Luciano Pavarotti sang in Miss Sarajevo as a protest against the horrors of a war which fortunately is now behind us. Miss Sarajevo –2011, Karmelina Martina 02 /03 In this sofa, an ideal world returns to life in the memory of salons permeated with the aroma of Turkish coffee, of rooms decorated with lace ornaments, of jambolijas (shaggy wool blankets), of carved wooden tables and the endless variety of handmade tablecloths and napkins covering them The design is sleek and understated. A light, linear frame holds the large seat and backrest cushions. The sofa’s simple look has the added touch of the backrest cushions inspired by the Bosnian tradition of covering sofas with a length of fabric richly decorated with embroidery and other ornamentation. Ornamental beauty and practicality, identity and memory. The designer intended the cushion cover as a complementary personality, a way of introducing change, of adapting to times and contexts. The embroidered fabric is not just an ordinary cover. With its intimate, domestic nature, it is rather a garment that reveals a world and a way of life, a sign of cultural belonging. Weil ich nie zurückrief, brüll- te er meine Haushälterin an, sie solle Gott ausrichten, daß er Pavarotti ein Lied zu schreiben habe.“ Bono gab nach und komponierte „Miss Sarajevo“. • Dancing About Architecture : Postmodernism and Irish Popular Music
Dancing About Architecture : Postmodernism and Irish Popular Music Stephen Ryan 'Writing about music is like dancing about architecture' Elvis Costello Introduction Listening to Bono of U2 in a recent radio interview, I was struck by a comment he made. He was talking about contemporary and past musics, and how the past and the present are tied up with hopes and fears about the future. It was, he argued, a case of the difference between yesterdays tomorrow and todays tomorrow. Yesterday's tomorrow was about a confidence for the future, a belief that progress was more or less inevitable and, for music, that artistic creativity would continue to blossom and produce great works. By contrast, today's tomorrow is characterised by a chronic lack of confidence in the future, a deep-seated questioning of the possibility of further progress, and a resigned belief that absolute musical creativity is no longer possible (if it had ever existed in the first place) simply because all the good music has been written already. This, for me, is crucial to the very idea of postmodern music. However, as Elvis Costello's quote above suggests, any attempt to rationalise, analyse or intellectualise music is bound to fail. By its very nature, music is not readily suited to a written discourse. Added to this is the problem of how different sectors of the music community react to attempts of any academic approach to popular music is bound to come up against some resistance. This resistance tends to take two forms: one that comes from the music industry itself and one from academia.
