Apocalypticism in Wagner's Ring by Woodrow Steinken BA, New York
Title Page Everything That Is, Ends: Apocalypticism in Wagner’s Ring by Woodrow Steinken BA, New York University, 2015 MA, University of Pittsburgh, 2018 Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Pittsburgh 2021 Committee Page UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH DIETRICH SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SCIENCES This dissertation was presented by Woodrow Steinken It was defended on March 23, 2021 and approved by James Cassaro, Professor, Music Adriana Helbig, Associate Professor, Music David Levin, Professor, Germanic Studies Dan Wang, Assistant Professor, Music Dissertation Director: Olivia Bloechl Professor, Music ii Copyright © by Woodrow Steinken 2021 iii Abstract Everything That Is, Ends: Apocalypticism in Wagner’s Ring Woodrow Steinken, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2021 This dissertation traces the history of apocalypticism, broadly conceived, and its realization on the operatic stage by Richard Wagner and those who have adapted his works since the late nineteenth century. I argue that Wagner’s cycle of four operas, Der Ring des Nibelungen (1876), presents colloquial conceptions of time, space, and nature via supernatural, divine characters who often frame the world in terms of non-rational metaphysics. Primary among these minor roles is Erda, the personification of the primordial earth. Erda’s character prophesies the end of the world in Das Rheingold, a prophecy undone later in Siegfried by Erda’s primary interlocutor and chief of the gods, Wotan. I argue that Erda’s role changes in various stage productions of the Ring, and these changes bespeak a shifting attachment between humanity, the earth, and its imagined apocalyptic demise. -

MEMBERS FUNCTION CHRISTA MAYER: Conversation with a Bayreuth Mezzo Interviewed by Sophie Burns, RWS Young Artist Awardee 2019 What is it like to be a practicing Wagnerian singer at Bayreuth and around the world? Sophie Burns met fellow mezzo soprano Christa Mayer at the Bayreuth Festival 2019 which she attended as the RWS Young Artist Award recipient. Now, on behalf of the Society, Sophie has the opportunity to ask Christa what it is like to be a successful Wagner performer, how Bayreuth compares to other opera houses, and what goes into being a performer in opera and concerts - from the perspective of a young singer taking her own steps forward with her career. The interview will be held live via Zoom, with Christa in Bayreuth and Sophie in Berlin. We are fortunate to be able to speak to Christa on the opening day of the 2021 Bayreuth Festival. Wagneriana, a Publication of the Boston Wagner Society
Wagneriana Winter 2014 Volume 11, Number 1 Ich höre dich, schlimmer Albe: was hast du meinem Schlaf zu sagen? — Götterdämmerung From the President Many music lovers shun Wagner’s operas because of his fearsome reputation as an anti-Semite. They also are influenced by reports that Wagner’s music is full of shrieks and therefore unpleasant. Summer 2020 Été 2020
! ! ! ! NATIONAL CAPITAL !!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Soc iété d’Opéra Opera Society de la CAPITALE NATIONALE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEWSLETTER BULLETIN SUMMER 2020 ÉTÉ 2020 President’s Message When I wrote my message for the last newsletter on March 1st, I had such enthusiasm for a spring full of opera. I had watched closely the virus situation in China and even so, I did not have the foresight to see how this virus would cancel all our wonderful planning. Nevertheless, opera is available through the internet and “live streams”. We are virtually connecting with video through FaceTime and Zoom. It is amazing how everyone is embracing technology to connect. One of my favorite events in Ottawa has been High C and High T. Murray Kitts has agreed to do a virtual High C and High T entitled “Fake News at the Opera” using Zoom. There will be no charge and no tea. Please invite your friends and fellow opera lovers to join us on June 21st at 2PM for our first virtual High C but no tea. I am saddened to report that two of our dear members have passed away in May: Shelagh Williams and Bob Cumming. A tribute to Shelagh Williams is in this newsletter. Bob’s wife, Marian, is a frequent contributor to our newsletter. Our deepest sympathies go to David, Marian and their families. During this time of separation, let’s stay connected by using the old-fashioned telephone, by zooming and watching live opera streams. Your ideas for ways that we can use Zoom for more ways to get together will be most welcome. -
