منحت الجامعة األميركية في بيروت شهادة الدكتوراه الفخرية من حين آلخر بين العامين 1890 و 2003ألشخاص على ارتباط وثيق بالجامعة، ًتقديرا Honorary doctoral degrees were awarded by the American University of Beirut occasionally from 1890. In لخدماتهم البارزة وانجازاتهم الالمعة. وبين العام 2003 واليوم دأبت الجامعة ً سنوياعلى منح الدكتوراه الفخرية في االنسانيات قبيل احتفال التخرج the tradition resumed after a long hiatus; since that date, at commencement time, honorary doctorates 2003 of humane letters have been awarded each year to individuals distinguished in their own specific fields لعدد من األفراد المتميزين في حقول اختصاصهم، والذين ّتجسد انجازاتهم قيم الجامعة ورسالتها. وأول امرأة حصلت على الدكتوراه الفخرية من الجامعة هي هلن توماس، اللبنانية األصل والمراسلة الصحفية في البيت األبيض. وقد حصلت على and whose achievements reflect the ideals and mission of this University. A committed philanthropist, he worked to support نجاحه في األعمال تمحور ًأسا ًسا حول شركة ادجو غروب المتعددة االختصاصات والجنسيات والتي أسسها في العام 1956 . وهذا النجاح يتوازى universities, hospitals, clinics, and cultural organizations. Shalala, an American of Lebanese descent—teacher, government manager, and university نجحت دونا شالال بقوة في مسيرتها في الخدمة العامة، فعلّمت في سبع جامعات وترأست ثالث منها كما خدمت كمسؤولة حكومية. وفي عهد الرئيس administrator— has spent a life of public service, teaching in seven universities, serving in two United States بيل كلنتون، حققت أطول خدمة كوزيرة للصحة والخدمة البشرية. وهي أول وزيرة أميركية من أصل عربي. وقد ُوصفت دونا شالال بأنها من أفضل government cabinet positions, and presiding as president (chancellor) of three universities.
