UPPER ISLAND MUSICAL FESTIVAL PREAMBLE

AIMS OF THE ASSOCIATION

The Upper Island Musical Festival is a volunteer-run, non-profit society whose purpose is to advance, promote and develop the Musical Competition Festival movement and to encourage the study and practice of music, dancing, and speech & dramatic arts. For 90 years, we have been organizing an annual festival to carry out these aims in Nanaimo and for the surrounding area. We quote from the Digest Report of the Federation of Canadian Musical Festivals: “Competition is essential in the conduct of a Festival. No non-competitive means can raise the same standard of performance to the same degree or create the same interest in striving to attain the highest levels of performance and appreciation. Competition is a means to an end and is not to be stressed to the exclusion of the Festival spirit. It is a means of pacing one another on the road to excellence and is to arise above rivalry.” The Festival spirit may be defined as the joy of participating with others in seeking the highest levels in the art of music and kindred arts. Inculcating this spirit in competitors, the audience, and the community is a priority for all those responsible for the operation of the Festivals.

The UIMF gives a sincere welcome and thank-you to all those partici pating in this year’s festival: our sponsors and patrons whose generosity makes our festival possible; the performers who have practiced so diligently for the occasion; the teachers who have worked so hard to prepare their students; the adjudicators who have taken time out of busy schedules to offer their friendly critiques, give encouragement and share their knowledge; an appreciative audience that ensures a successful festival by providing incentive to the performers. A festival is a celebration, a gathering for entertainment, and a competition. May the Upper Island Musical Festival be all of these permeated with the spirit of friendship. May all the competitors rise to the occasion and perform to the very best of their abilities.

As the audience for these festival performances, you are one of the most important participants. Every artist responds to an appreciative audience. Please observe the following rules: SILENCE IS ESSENTIAL during performances and adjudications, so please: - Enter or leave only between classes; - Refrain from talking during performances or adjudications; - Control small children within the performance venue and adjacent areas; - Do not applaud BEFORE performances, - Recognize ALL contestants with applause on completion of their performances. PLEASE CONSIDER: Individuals who are scheduled late in a session may be discouraged if the majority of the audience has left. If possible, please stay until the end of the session. YOUR ATTENDANCE IS GREATLY APPRECIATED - THANK YOU!

IMPORTANT EFFECT OF BILL C-42 – COPYRIGHT ACT It is illegal to copy by any means previously published material. Publishers usually hold the copyright, and in the case of firms no longer in business, their copyrights are assets transferred to others. A letter is required from any publisher who has given permission for the copying of their work. Internet copies are acceptable only with a viable receipt. The Federation of Canadian Music Festivals has now deemed it permissible to use photocopies for page turns etc. as long as the original copy is present at the performance. This does not mean that the adjudicator has the original and the performer the photocopy; there must be two published copies present in the competition venue. Heavy penalties are enacted in this legislation and have been levied upon other arts organizations. This Association cannot afford to be compromised. PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR AN EXEMPTION. ANY PARTICIPANT WHO DOES NOT STAY WITHIN THE ABOVE COPYRIGHT RULES WILL BE DISQUALIFIED

THE REWARD IS WITHIN The contest lasts for moments though the training’s taken years , It wasn’t the winning alone that was worth the work and the tears. The applause will be forgotten; the prize will be misplaced, but the long hard hours of practice will never be a waste. For in trying to win, you build a skill; you learn that winning depends on will. You never grow by how much you win -- you only grow by how much you put in. So, any new challenge you’ve just begun, put forth your best and you’ve already won. W.A. (Bill) Clennan – “Canadian Dean of Public Speak ers”

78 UPPER ISLAND MUSICAL FESTIVAL DANCE – STAGE/STREET

Stage/Street Dance Adjudicator

Kim Sato

Kim Sato feels extremely grateful that she has a long career as a professional street dance artist. She has been the winner of many all styles and locking battles including most recently the Groovemekanix 18th Anniversary (San Fransico), TUDS (Toronto), Sweet 16 (Seattle), Nothing but Flavor (New York), Vancouver Street Dance Festival, the Honour Roll, The Umoja Battle, and Last One Stands (Vancouver). Kim has had the pleasure of judging for many different all styles and locking battles and adjudicating formal stage competitions for street dance, contemporary, jazz and tap. Most recently Kim had the pleasure of judging the 3rd edition of ‘On Point’ a high level 1 vs 1 locking battle in Montreal.

As a professional performer she has toured all around the world to China, Japan, Brazil, Korea, Europe, US and Canada. Highlight credits include working with Heather Dotto on her co-created solo in Small Stages 35, Deanna Peter’s “Cut Away”, touring Europe with Uzume Taiko ensemble, playing “Al Star” in the “Groovaloos” (LA) show, touring all around the US as a tap dancer in Rhythmatix and working in film and television choreographing “The Possession” and dancing in “Warrior’s Gate”, “Witches of Eastend”, “Further Adventures in Babysitting”, “Rags, “Hellcats”, “Spectacular”, “Kickin’ it Old Skool”, “Another Cinderella Story”, “Centre Stage 2”, and “The L Word”.

Receiving her first BC Arts Council project grant, Kim was thrilled to have the support to create a new piece on what it means to battle and also have the professional organization, New Works, present it. The new full-length piece titled “Into the Tao” explores a mix of taiko drumming with a scratch DJ and 8 street dance artists.

Kim has been teaching for over 23 years and is happy to have completed her 4th semester of teaching CA 120, a 3-credit course in Hip Hop and Funk styles dance at Simon Fraser University. Kim continues to passionately direct and lead Project Soul, the professional street dance collective that has been touring for the past 9 years through the Artstarts in Schools Program. She is excited to keep challenging herself as an artist, educator, artistic director, choreographer, producer and dance advocate as long as she possibly can.

We quote from the Digest Report of the Federation of Canadian Musical Festivals: “Competition is essentia l in the conduct of a Festival. Inculcating this spirit in competitors, audience and the community is a priority for all those responsible for the operation of the Festivals.

The UIMF offers a sincere thank-you to all those participating i n this year’s festival:

our sponsors and patrons whose generosity makes our festival possible; the performers who have practiced so diligently for the occasion; the teachers who have worked so hard to prepare their students; the adjudicators who have taken time out of busy schedules to offer their friendly critiques, give encouragement and share their knowledge; an appreciative audience that ensures a successful festival by providing incentive to the performers. A festival is a celebration, a gathering for entertainment, a competition. May the Upper Island Musical Festival be all of these permeated with the spirit of friendship. May all the competitors rise to the occasion and perform to the very best of their abilities.
