  • 1959 Jazz: a Historical Study and Analysis of Jazz and Its Artists and Recordings in 1959
GELB, GREGG, DMA. 1959 Jazz: A Historical Study and Analysis of Jazz and Its Artists and Recordings in 1959. (2008) Directed by Dr. John Salmon. 69 pp. Towards the end of the 1950s, about halfway through its nearly 100-year history, jazz evolution and innovation increased at a faster pace than ever before. By 1959, it was evident that two major innovative styles and many sub-styles of the major previous styles had recently emerged. Additionally, all earlier practices were in use, making a total of at least ten actively played styles in 1959. It would no longer be possible to denote a jazz era by saying one style dominated, such as it had during the 1930s’ Swing Era. This convergence of styles is fascinating, but, considering that many of the recordings of that year represent some of the best work of many of the most famous jazz artists of all time, it makes 1959 even more significant. There has been a marked decrease in the jazz industry and in stylistic evolution since 1959, which emphasizes 1959’s importance in jazz history. Many jazz listeners, including myself up until recently, have always thought the modal style, from the famous 1959 Miles Davis recording, Kind of Blue, dominated the late 1950s. However, a few of the other great and stylistically diverse recordings from 1959 were John Coltrane’s Giant Steps, Ornette Coleman’s The Shape of Jazz To Come, and Dave Brubeck’s Time Out, which included the very well- known jazz standard Take Five. My research has found many more 1959 recordings of equally unique artistic achievement.

  • The Cambridge Companion to Duke Ellington Edited by Edward Green Frontmatter More Information
Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-88119-7 - The Cambridge Companion to Duke Ellington Edited by Edward Green Frontmatter More information The Cambridge Companion to Duke Ellington Duke Ellington is widely held to be the greatest jazz composer and one of the most significant cultural icons of the twentieth century. This comprehensive and accessible Companion is the first collection of essays to survey, in-depth, Ellington’s career, music, and place in popular culture. An international cast of authors includes renowned scholars, critics, composers, and jazz musicians. Organized in three parts, the Companion first sets Ellington’s life and work in context, providing new information about his formative years, method of composing, interactions with other musicians, and activities abroad; its second part gives a complete artistic biography of Ellington; and the final section is a series of specific musical studies, including chapters on Ellington and songwriting, the jazz piano, descriptive music, and the blues. Featuring a chronology of the composer’s life and major recordings, this book is essential reading for anyone with an interest in Ellington’s enduring artistic legacy. edward green is a professor at Manhattan School of Music, where since 1984 he has taught jazz, music history, composition, and ethnomusicology. He is also on the faculty of the Aesthetic Realism Foundation, and studied with the renowned philosopher Eli Siegel, the founder of Aesthetic Realism. Dr. Green serves on the editorial boards of The International Review of the Aesthetics and Sociology of Music, Haydn (the journal of the Haydn Society of North America), and Проблемы Музыкальной Науки (Music Scholarship), which is published by a consortium of major Russian conservatories, and is editor of China and the West: The Birth of a New Music (2009).

  • Summer Camps, Institutes & Programs
2021 Guide to SUMMER CAMPS, INSTITUTES & PROGRAMS November 2020 Editor’s Note 2021 Guide to Summer 2021 promises to be intense. By then, having spent well over a year in a holding pattern while waiting (hoping, praying) for COVID-19 to dissipate, artists and their audiences will be hungry for the opportunity to perform, rehearse, teach, and/or listen to live music in a SUMMER CAMPS, shared environment. Fortunately, there are many opportunities being planned, and our annual INSTITUTES & PROGRAMS guide to summer camps, institutes, and programs lists nearly 300 possibilities. Keeping in mind that we assemble the information from these organizations months in advance to help you plan your summer experience, it’s always a good idea to check their individual websites before plunking down $5000 to sing in the South of France or, at the other end of the range of choices, signing up for a tuition-free youth orchestra in Los Angeles. As ever, the options are wide and enticing. As an avid (amateur) chorister, I’ve been eyeing Berkshire Choral International, which traditionally offers several major choral works to sing during specific time periods in specific locales with different conductors: Verdi in Italy, Poulenc in France, Janáček in the Czech Republic. The options for pros and/or serious students of the artform are also plentiful. Some programs specialize in strings only (check out Your Body is Your Strad—no audition required), some in bel canto (in Florence, no less!), some in marimba (Portugal), some in all disciplines (big guns, like Tanglewood and Aspen). There’s a two-week young women’s (ages 14-19) composers’ camp in Pennsylvania, a bilingual Thanksgiving camp in Québec, and we’d be remiss if we didn’t include the Beethoven Bootcamp in Virginia.

  • Upper Island Musical Festival Preamble
90 th Anniversary 1928 – 2018 UPPER ISLAND MUSICAL FESTIVAL FEBRUARY 17 - APRIL 14, 2018 Dance Gala – Saturday, April 7, 2018 90 th Anniversary Honours Concert – Saturday, April 14, 2018 PROGRAMME - $5.00 UPPER ISLAND MUSICAL FESTIVAL PREAMBLE AIMS OF THE ASSOCIATION The Upper Island Musical Festival is a volunteer-run, non-profit society whose purpose is to advance, promote and develop the Musical Competition Festival movement and to encourage the study and practice of music, dancing, and speech & dramatic arts. For 90 years, we have been organizing an annual festival to carry out these aims in Nanaimo and for the surrounding area. We quote from the Digest Report of the Federation of Canadian Musical Festivals: “Competition is essential in the conduct of a Festival. No non-competitive means can raise the same standard of performance to the same degree or create the same interest in striving to attain the highest levels of performance and appreciation. Competition is a means to an end and is not to be stressed to the exclusion of the Festival spirit. It is a means of pacing one another on the road to excellence and is to arise above rivalry.” The Festival spirit may be defined as the joy of participating with others in seeking the highest levels in the art of music and kindred arts. Inculcating this spirit in competitors, the audience, and the community is a priority for all those responsible for the operation of the Festivals. The UIMF gives a sincere welcome and thank-you to all those partici pating in this year’s festival: our sponsors and patrons whose generosity makes our festival possible; the performers who have practiced so diligently for the occasion; the teachers who have worked so hard to prepare their students; the adjudicators who have taken time out of busy schedules to offer their friendly critiques, give encouragement and share their knowledge; an appreciative audience that ensures a successful festival by providing incentive to the performers.
