A study on the fluctuation of glass eel migration was performed in the lower part afthe Mondego estuary in 1988-1989, Although the freshwater flow seems to be a ruling factor in the ascent of glass eels in this estuary, the results obtained show a variable pattern which is not easily interpreted, confirming the complexity and unpredictability of this migration, INTRODUCTION The fishery for glass eels in Portugal has been regulated by law since 1985. This legislation concerns only the estuarine waters. The official fishing season extends from 1 November to 28 February and the only permitted gear is a hand net called "rapeta". Official data on glass eel catches before 1985 are rare mainly because the previous legislation did not oblige fishermen to apply for fishing licences and to report their catches. Numbers of fishermen and quantities captured are therefore mostly unknown. More recently, the application of the law has been given considerable attention from the authorities. Despite all this, the official data available today are still underestimates. Knowledge on abundance and preferences of glass eels during their upstream migration is poorly documented in Portugal. Apart from Mondego (Jorge and Sobral, 1989) and Minho (Weber, 1986) estuaries no studies have been published. In order to obtain information about the current status of the glass eels in river Mondego, a survey was conducted from 1988 to 1990. The objectives were to examine and compare abundance and environmental preferences of glass eels during migration. Special attention was devoted to studying their abundance related to temperature and salinity. MATERIAL AND METHODS The estuary of Mondego is divided into two channels (Fig. 1), north and south which differ in width and depth. This study was conducted in the north channel since the south channel is too shallow, during low tide, to permit the use of big nets. Each month, from January 1988 to February 1990, the quantity of glass eels entering the estuary at new moon, was estimated by passive fishing using a fixed net called "tela" (Fig. 2) always set at night and at the same site during the sampling period. The net, with a height of 5.8 metres, was set at low tide and the fishery was performed during the flood tide.

ZETTLER Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde, Seestr. 15, D-18119 Rostock, Germany Abstract During the EU Habitats Directive monitoring between 2008 and 2010 the ecological requirements of the gastropod species Anisus vorticulus (Troschel 1834) were investigated in 24 different waterbodies of northeast Germany. 117 sampling units were analyzed quantitatively. 45 of these units contained living individuals of the target species in abundances between 4 and 616 individuals m-2. More than 25.300 living individuals of accompanying freshwater mollusc species and about 9.400 empty shells were counted and determined to the species level. Altogether 47 species were identified. The benefit of enhanced knowledge on the ecological requirements was gained due to the wide range and high number of sampled habitats with both obviously convenient and inconvenient living conditions for A. vorticulus. In northeast Germany the amphibian zones of sheltered mesotrophic lake shores, swampy (lime) fens and peat holes which are sun exposed and have populations of any Chara species belong to the optimal, continuously and densely colonized biotopes. The cluster analysis emphasized that A. vorticulus was associated with a typical species composition, which can be named as “Anisus-vorticulus-community”. In compliance with that both the frequency of combined occurrence of species and their similarity in relative abundance are important. The following species belong to the “Anisus-vorticulus-community” in northeast Germany: Pisidium obtusale, Pisidium milium, Pisidium pseudosphaerium, Bithynia leachii, Stagnicola palustris, Valvata cristata, Bathyomphalus contortus, Bithynia tentaculata, Anisus vortex, Hippeutis complanatus, Gyraulus crista, Physa fontinalis, Segmentina nitida and Anisus vorticulus.

In 1942 this species was found in the Czech Republic for the first time and a total of 155 species records were obtained by the end of 2005. Based on distribution data, we observed the gradual expansion of this gastropod not only in the Elbe Lowland, where its occurrence is concentrated, but also in other regions of the Czech Republic particularly between 2001 and 2005. F. Müll.: female maturity at shell diameter of 2.05–2.95 mm, number of whorls 2.375–3, 55–533 days from hatching, depending mainly on food conditions. Mean life span in good food conditions 377 days, in bad food conditions 896 days (maximum 1,170 days). Snails kept in pairs deposited a mean number of 51 cocoons per lifetime (maximum 105), with a total of 134 eggs (maximum 353); the number of eggs per cocoon ranged from 0 to 10, rarely more than 16 (mean 2.6). Depending on life span there were 1–3 reproductive seasons. Of 20 adult snails kept singly, only one laid eggs which hatched. The mean maximum shell size for snails kept in pairs: 3.28 mm, 3.125 whorls, for snails kept singly: 3.93 mm, 3.375 whorls (maximum 4.70 mm, 3.750 whorls). Snails with shells of strongly de- scending whorls were almost always infected with trematode larvae located in their gonads. Snails infected when young never reached female maturity.     JOURNAL OF CONCHOLOGY (2005), VOL.38, NO .6 607 AN ANNOTATED LIST OF THE NON-MARINE MOLLUSCA OF BRITAIN AND IRELAND ROY ANDERSON1 Abstract An updated nomenclatural list of the non-marine Mollusca of the Britain and Ireland is provided. This updates all previous lists and revises nomenclature and classification in the context of recent changes and of new European lists, including the Clecom List. Cases are made for the usage of names in the List by means of annotations. The List will provide a basis for the future census and cataloguing of the fauna of Britain and Ireland. INTRODUCTION There has been a need for some time to modernise the list of non-marine Mollusca for Britain and Ireland, a subject last visited in this journal in 1976 (Waldén 1976; Kerney 1976). Many of the changes that have appeared in the literature since then are contentious and Kerney (1999) chose not to incorporate many of these into the latest atlas of non-marine Mollusca of Britain and Ireland. A new European List, the Clecom List (Falkner et al. 2001) has now appeared and it seems appropriate to examine in more detail constituent changes which might affect the British and Irish faunas. This is given additional urgency by the inception of a new census of the molluscs of Britain and Ireland by the Conchological Society. Recorders in the Society are aware of many of the proposed changes but unable to implement them without general agreement. In addition, many field malacologists make use of the recording package RECORDER, a recent form of which has been developed jointly by JNCC and the National Biodiversity Network in the United Kingdom.

MÜLLER, 1774) (GASTROPODA: HETEROBRANCHIA) IN THE LABORATORY STANIS£AW MYZYK S¹polno 14, 77-320 Przechlewo, Poland ABSTRACT: Laboratory and field observations in 1994–2004 made it possible to ascertain the following para- meters of life cycle of Valvata piscinalis (O. F. Müller, 1774). In favourable food conditions (filamentous diatoms) female maturity was attained in 42–85 days from hatching (mean 59 days) at the body whorl diameter of 3.45–4.65 mm (mean 4.10 mm) and the number of whorls 3.25–3.75 (mean 3.53). In slightly less favourable food conditions (periphyton) the maturity was attained later at a somewhat lower mean shell size. The num- ber of cocoons and eggs produced during lifetime by snails kept in pairs was 18–113 and 387–2,862, respec- tively; the number of eggs per cocoon ranged from 0 to 76. Among singly kept snails only half laid cocoons (maximum 7 cocoons/6 eggs during lifetime), and the eggs failed to develop. The mean life span of snails fed mainly with periphyton was ca. 1 year (maximum 641 days); it was distinctly shorter in snails fed with filamen- tous diatoms (usually 5–7 months, rarely more than 11 months). In very unfavourable food conditions (small quantities of periphyton) female maturity was attained only after 1–2 years and the life span was not much lon- ger: maximum 830 days. In natural conditions (lake Sosnowe near S¹polno) reproduction started in the sec- ond half of April and lasted till half of July; the cocoons contained 10–37 eggs.

Фауна рек севера Западной Сибири, не принадлежащих бассейну Оби, представляет особый интерес с точки зрения зоогеографии и понимания процессов формирования пресноводной малакофауны. Начинаясь в таежной зоне, эти реки текут на север и не могут служить для интерзо- нального расселения видов из более низких широт. Однако сведения о пресноводной малакофауне таких речных бассейнов слабо представлены в научной литературе, часть опубликованных видовых нахождений сомнительна либо ошибочна. В работе рассмотрены брюхоногие моллюски семейства Valvatidae бассейна р. Таз, расположенного ближе к Енисею, чем к Оби. Материалом исследований послужили качественные и количественные сборы авторов. Установлено, что в водоемах и водото- ках бассейна Таза обитает восемь видов моллюсков рода Valvata, приведен аннотированный список видов, дана краткая зоогеографическая характеристика. Три вида (Valvata helicoidea, V. sorensis и V. korotnevi) впервые указаны для бассейна Таза, один из них (V. korotnevi) – впервые для водоёмов Западной Сибири.
