A planning committee began organizing the symposium in August, 1989, and was instrumental in running the events in November, 1990. Sharon Graham of the Division of Continuing Educationwas responsible for the administrative organization. Carter Department of Philosophy, Marquette University Milwaukee, WI The uses of visual images based on calligraphy and the depiction of the human body in Chinese art have served an important role in the exercise of political power by leaders in Chinese culture. The two media that are most closely linked to the exercise of political power in Chinese culture are written or performed calligraphy and representational art featuring the human figure. The latter is more familiar in western nations where one often finds sculptures of political figures displayed in prominent public spaces. However, in China calligraphy as a form of written art serves as a principal symbolic expression of political power. This is true in both traditional Chinese culture and also the Twentieth Century revolutionary period and beyond. The connection between figurative political images and political power needs little explanation for a western audience. But how is calligraphy connected to the theme of the political body in Chinese art and culture? One answer is offered in Mao Zedong’s early writings, where he linked the practice of calligraphy to physical training of the body.

They tend to be private or just semi- public collections built up with education purposes. - The first public exhibitions of these models in the arts context didn’t happen until the end of the 18th century. ABSTRACT OF THESIS PRAGMATIC MODERNISM: PROJECT [PROJEKT] AND POLISH DESIGN, 1956-1970 Recently Scholars of design history began to recognize the phenomenon of Socialist Modernism, the return to modernist aesthetics to Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union during the thaw, the disavowal of Stalinist policies by Nikita Khrushchev after the 20th Party Congress of the Communist Party in February of 1956 and the resulting turn away from Socialist Realism, a historicist method in architecture that expressed socialist values, which the Stalinist favored. Scholars of art and design argued that Socialist Modernism in Poland constituted an affirmation of the party’s authority and that of the political system because designers who practiced it focused on abstract form and technological experiments. Unlike the modernism of the early 20th century, which followed a utopian ideology to ensure universal well being through art and design, it focused on the aesthetics of elementary form.

    Christian de Portzamparc 1994 Laureate Acceptance Speech Today is a great day in my life, and I am an extremely happy man. To join the list of architects this prize has honored, when only yesterday I still felt personally that every project was for me a new experiment, has brought me a strange mixture of excitement and serenity, while at the same time facing me with a great responsibility: I can no longer afford to make any mistakes. I have a duty of excellence towards you, and as we never know where that lies, I shall never be able to stop. I see the concern already on the face of Elizabeth, my wife, who, as well as designing her own furniture, supports me so marvelously in my work. It is a wonderful profession to be in, but it is often an uphill struggle. Architecture is an art, but a public art. More often than not, the public does not choose architecture as it would a museum to visit. Instead, architecture is imposed on us, in our daily life, our homes and our places of work. And for this reason, the architect-artist is accountable for his work; he owes an explanation. We are asked to express ourselves all the time. And it’s normal. And because architecture is a public art, architects, unlike other artists, do not enjoy complete personal creative freedom. They are expected to impart a sort of legitimacy to their work by providing the right answers to the needs of a particular era. I have often felt, in this respect, that I am following a very personal path, and perhaps more than others, I have had my doubts at times.

Introduction The Mid 20th Century Architecture in New Hampshire Context: 1945‐1975 was prepared by Lisa Mausolf, Preservation Consultant, under contract for the New Hampshire Department of Employment Security. The context was prepared as mitigation for the sale of the Employment Security building at 32 South Main Street in Concord. The modern curtain wall structure was designed by Manchester architects Koehler & Isaak in 1958. A colorful landmark on South Main Street, discussion of the architectural significance of the building draws commentary ranging from praise “as an excellent example of mid‐ century Modern architecture and ideals of space, form, and function”1 to derision, calling it one of the ugliest buildings in Concord. NH Department of Employment Security, 32 South Main Street, Concord (1958) The Mid 20th Century Architecture in New Hampshire Context was prepared in order to begin work on a framework to better understand the state’s modern architectural resources. The report focuses primarily on high‐style buildings, designed by architects, and excludes residential structures.

These models consist in various ways of establishing culture as a policy domain, in the definition of cultural policy rationales, and in modes of organization and of governance compatible with democratic standards. This triple specification process has never been fully achieved. It is being challenged in a way that questions these policy regimes and the notion of cultural policy they had defined.
