Scuttlebutt July 2011 SEQUOIA CLUB SCUTTLEBUTT A Quarterly Newsletter June 2011 Presidents Corner Hello Gambier Bay Family! Our Reunion Committee has finalized our 2011 reunion in Omaha for October 19-23, 2011. Please check inside for all the details on registration, hotel, board and membership meeting dates/time, and our excursion events. I look forward to seeing you and meeting new survivors and family members who will be in attendance. We will again have a raffle at our banquet and this year we will also have a silent auction, which will include many items obtained from the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show! As you know, ticket sales at the raffle help tremendously with the Association finances and your support is greatly appreciated. If you would like to donate items for the raffle or silent auction you can send them to me or Marlene, or you can bring them along with you to the reunion. As a reminder, this year the Association will have its annual Board meeting and bi-annual membership meeting. The membership meeting agenda will include the election of our officers and governors for the years 2011-2013 and will also include an update from our Historical Committee on their procedures of tracking and recording your historical memorabilia that is placed in your community. Our website is growing and we areType constantly to enter text updating and adding new information to the site. Should you have any information, stories, photos or articles that you would like to contribute, please contact me. Marlene and Tony Potochniak will be working together to update the lists of our KIA and those who have crossed the bar so we can keep this information current on our website. Tony is one of the founding members of the Association and he has a great historical website – www.ussgambierbay-vc10.com – check it out! Should you have any information regarding a survivor who has crossed the bar, please contact Marlene with that information at [email protected]. Remember to check out all of our items in our ship store. We have some new Tee shirts available as well as mugs, hats, lapel pins, and our all time favorite the Freedomʼs Cost lithograph by Richard Moore. Please contact Marlene if you are interested in purchasing any merchandise. Once again, I would like to thank everyone for their continued support, encouragement, and open communication to not only me but to the entire Board. We are here to serve you and to keep the memory alive and honor all of our husbands, brothers, grandparents, uncles, and friends who served on the USS Gambier Bay. Should you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me or one of the other Board members. I will see you all in Omaha! Washington RACAL The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade The Department of the Arts, Sport, the Environment, Tourism and Territories Underwater Systems Australia Report-Department of Maritime Archaeology, Western Australian Museum, No. 43 2 Background to the report In July 1988, a wreck believed to be the SS Koombanah, which disappeared with all hands in waters off Western Australia in 1921, was officially reported to the W. A. Museum and the federal government by Captain David Tomlinson, (Master/owner of the Darwin based Research Vessel Flamingo Bay) and Mr Mike Barron, a Tasmanian associate of Tomlinson's, fr;om the Commonwealth Fisheries. In order to facilitate an inspection of the site, it was decided on analysis of the available options and in the light of the W.A. Museum's policy of involving the finders where possible, to join with Messrs Tomlinson and Barron in an inspection out of Darwin on board the RV Flamingo Bay, a very well equipped and most suitable vessel for such a venture. Due to the depth of the water in which the site lay and the distance off shore, this required not only the charter of Flamingo Bay which normally runs at circa $2000 per day, but also the hire of a sophisticated position fixing system, a Remote Operated Submersible Vehicle with camera (ROV), echo sounder and side scan sonar.

  • THE JERSEYMAN 5 Years - Nr
1st Quarter 2007 "Rest well, yet sleep lightly and hear the call, if again sounded, to provide firepower for freedom…” THE JERSEYMAN 5 Years - Nr. 53 USS NEW JERSEY Primerman - Turret Two... “I was a primerman left gun, and for a short time, in right gun of turret two on the New Jersey. In fact there was a story written by Stars and Stripes on the gun room I worked in about July or August 1986. But to your questions, yes we wore a cartridge belt, the belt was stored in a locker in the turret, and the gun captain filled the belts. After the gun was loaded with rounds, six bags of powder (large bags were 110 lbs. each) and lead foil, the gun elevated down to the platform in the pit where loaded, and the primer was about the same size as a 30-30 brass cartridge. After I loaded the primer I would give the gun captain a "Thumbs up," the gun captain then pushed a button to let them know that the gun was loaded and ready to fire. After three tones sounded, the gun fired, the gun captain opened the breech and the empty primer fell Primer cartridge courtesy of Volunteer into the pit. Our crew could have a gun ready to fire Turret Captain Marty Waltemyer about every 27 seconds. All communicating was done by hand instructions only, and that was due to the noise in the turret. The last year I was in the turrets I was also a powder hoist operator...” Shane Broughten, former BM2 Skyberg, Minnesota USS NEW JERSEY 1984-1987 2nd Div.

Ichiro Fujisaki spoke Saturday in San Antonio at the final scheduled reunion of the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, its 64th annual convention, the San Antonio Express-News reported. Fujisakis apology was welcomed by some of the 73 surviving Bataan Death March veterans of the Army and former Army Air Corps members in attendance. But others criticized it, saying it was long overdue, not aimed directly at Americans and didn’t seem to come from the Japanese government as a whole. In 1942, Japanese captors marched about 78,000 prisoners of war -- 12,000 Americans and 66,000 Filipinos -- for six days on the Bataan Peninsula on the Philippine island of Luzon to a prisoner-of-war camp.
