It has been compiled up to that time from the memory of early members. In most cases over 45 years have elapsed since the members joined the Sub-Branch and many are 75 years old and over. You will therefore appreciate their difficulty in recalling names and dates accurately. Over the last five years I have been urged by the long -term members to put together this History but have lacked the facilities and the know how to complete the task. When Joe Harris joined the Sub-Branch and later published a book to enlighten his family on his service in the Army, I approached him to assist the Sub-Branch with the use of his computer, to produce this History.

Washington RACAL The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade The Department of the Arts, Sport, the Environment, Tourism and Territories Underwater Systems Australia Report-Department of Maritime Archaeology, Western Australian Museum, No. 43 2 Background to the report In July 1988, a wreck believed to be the SS Koombanah, which disappeared with all hands in waters off Western Australia in 1921, was officially reported to the W. A. Museum and the federal government by Captain David Tomlinson, (Master/owner of the Darwin based Research Vessel Flamingo Bay) and Mr Mike Barron, a Tasmanian associate of Tomlinson's, fr;om the Commonwealth Fisheries. In order to facilitate an inspection of the site, it was decided on analysis of the available options and in the light of the W.A. Museum's policy of involving the finders where possible, to join with Messrs Tomlinson and Barron in an inspection out of Darwin on board the RV Flamingo Bay, a very well equipped and most suitable vessel for such a venture. Due to the depth of the water in which the site lay and the distance off­ shore, this required not only the charter of Flamingo Bay which normally runs at circa $2000 per day, but also the hire of a sophisticated position fixing system, a Remote Operated Submersible Vehicle with camera (ROV), echo sounder and side scan sonar.

    CALL THE HANDS Issue No.24 October 2018 From the President Welcome to this month’s issue of Call the Hands. Our aim is to provide members and the community with news of contemporary and historical events as well as information on services provided by the Society. These services are best accessed through our comprehensive website and Facebook page. The arrival of the Royal Australian Navy’s second Hobart-class air warfare destroyer, NUSHIP Brisbane in Sydney on 10 September reminds us not just of Australia’s significant warship building program (3 destroyers, 12 submarines, 9 frigates and 12 Offshore Patrol Vessels) but the significance of the RAN in world terms. Ranked 54th in terms of vessel numbers the RAN is ranked 21st in terms of capability according to the annual Global Fire Power review. The fleet, unlike many navies maintains a busy schedule of strategically significant operations, exercises and engagement activities which help shape Australia’s international relations and our history in the longer term. Recent examples include the Indo-Pacific Endeavour tour by HMA Ships Adelaide and Toowoomba and Success to south west Pacific countries and current north-east Asia deployment by HMA Ships Huon and Gascoyne, the longest deployment for Mine Hunter Coastals to date. Such deployments are fundamental to relations with Australia’s regional neighbours. Linked to deployments of this nature was the 5 September announcement by the Minister for Australian foreign affairs to establish a ‘Pacific Fusion Centre’. This centre will analyse information to strengthen maritime awareness and provide information to Pacific decision makers responding to security threats, such as illegal fishing, people smuggling and narcotics trafficking.

In fact there was a story written by Stars and Stripes on the gun room I worked in about July or August 1986. But to your questions, yes we wore a cartridge belt, the belt was stored in a locker in the turret, and the gun captain filled the belts. After the gun was loaded with rounds, six bags of powder (large bags were 110 lbs. each) and lead foil, the gun elevated down to the platform in the pit where loaded, and the primer was about the same size as a 30-30 brass cartridge. After I loaded the primer I would give the gun captain a "Thumbs up," the gun captain then pushed a button to let them know that the gun was loaded and ready to fire. After three tones sounded, the gun fired, the gun captain opened the breech and the empty primer fell Primer cartridge courtesy of Volunteer into the pit. Our crew could have a gun ready to fire Turret Captain Marty Waltemyer about every 27 seconds. All communicating was done by hand instructions only, and that was due to the noise in the turret. Abstract This thesis examines a small component of the Australian Navy, the Fleet Air Arm. Naval aviators have been contributing to Australian military history since 1914 but they remain relatively unheard of in the wider community and in some instances, in Australian military circles. Aviation within the maritime environment was, and remains, a versatile weapon in any modern navy but the struggle to initiate an aviation branch within the Royal Australian Navy was a protracted one. Finally coming into existence in 1947, the Australian Fleet Air Arm operated from the largest of all naval vessels in the post battle ship era; aircraft carriers. HMAS Albatross, Sydney, Vengeance and Melbourne carried, operated and fully maintained various fixed-wing aircraft and the naval personnel needed for operational deployments until 1982. These deployments included contributions to national and multinational combat, peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. With the Australian government’s decision not to replace the last of the aging aircraft carriers, HMAS Melbourne, in 1982, the survival of the Australian Fleet Air Arm, and its highly trained personnel, was in grave doubt. This was a major turning point for Australian Naval Aviation; these versatile flyers and the maintenance and technical crews who supported them retrained on rotary aircraft, or helicopters, and adapted to flight operations utilising small compact ships.

For the purposes of this handbook, the Warfare community is deemed to include all officers of the Seaman, Pilot and Observer Primary Qualifications. The Warfare Officer Community symbiotically contains personnel from the seaman, Submarine, Aviation, Hydrographic and Meteorological, Mine Clearance Diving and Naval Communications and Intelligence groups. The Warfare Officers Career Handbook is a source document for Warfare Officers to consult as they progress through their careers. It is intended to inform and stimulate consideration of career issues and to provide a coherent guide that articulates Navy’s requirements and expectations. The book provides a summary of the Warfare branch specialisations and the sub-specialisations that are embedded within them, leading in due course to entry into the Charge Program and the Command opportunities that follow. The Warfare Officers Career Handbook also describes the historical derivation of current warfare streams to provide contemporary relevance and the cultural background within which maritime warfare duties are conducted. It discusses the national context in which Warfare Officers discharge their duties. Leadership and ethical matters are explored, as is the inter-relationship between personal attributes, values, leadership, performance and sense of purpose. There is no intention that this handbook replicate or replace extant policy and procedural guidelines. Rather, the handbook focuses on the enduring features of maritime warfare. Policy by its nature is transient. Therefore, as far as possible, the Warfare Officers Career Handbook deals with broad principles and not more narrowly defined policies that rightly belong in other documents.
