CERAMICS and GLASSWARE

1 . A collection of bottles and china salvaged from HMS Britannia and HMS Hindostan when moored in the Dart , both ships were commissioned as training quarters for Officers prior to the building of The Royal Naval College in 1905. £50-£80.

*Notes Originally HMS Prince of (1860) and subsequently renamed HMS Britannia in 1869 to take over her predecessor as the at Dartmouth cadets were often in the habit of throwing pieces overboard, many were produced locally at The Pottery, see Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood Maritime sale 1st April 2009 lot 12.

2 . A Royal Worcester porcelain 'Nelsons Victory at Trafalgar' pewter lidded tankard . £20-£30.

3 . Two Wade miniature British Pusser's rum bottles, one other bottle and a advertising card . £20-£30.

4 . An Orient Steamship Navigation Company stoneware jardiniere by Royal Doulton , transfer printed emblem to ribbed body, 22.5cm high. £100-£150.

5 . P&O line ashtray and an Orient line ashtray by Royal Doulton , both stamped with factory marks and liner company marks to base ( 2). £40-£60.

6 . The Hunter River Steam Navigation Company blue and white soup bowl with SS Rose blue and white transfer decoration , 24cm diameter. £400-£600.

*Notes The Hunter River Steam Navigation Company was established in 1840 to provide a service between Sydney and the Hunter River. The Rose was built by Fairbairn and Company, Millwall, and rigged with two masts and flush decks and was the first iron hulled steam ship to arrive in Australia.

7 . A Royal Anglesey porcelain trio and dinner plate by Aynsley , with enamel crest and blue and gilt border, also named Helen (4). £40-£60.

*Notes The Helen was built by A M Dickie & Sons, Bangor 1931.

8 . A 19th Century Sunderland lustre jug 'The Unfortunate London' , printed in black and coloured enamels and two oval panels with orange lustre bands, 14.5cm high. £50-£60.

*Notes The London was built in 1864 for Money Wigram & Co and was lost in a storm on her third voyage to Australia in 1865.

9 . A late 19th Century Spanish 'Linea Serra De Vopores' oval meat plate, with floral transfer decorated border and liner emblem to centre. £80-£120.

10 . Furness Line - two dinner plates and small teapot by Royal Doulton, with polychrome transfer decoration. £30-£40.

11 . Two early 20th Century soot etched plates by R C Bottriell RMS Mauritania and RMMV Winchester Castle , both having ships portrait to centre and etched foul anchor motif to border, 25.5cm and 21cm respectively. £40-£60.

*Notes SS Dakahlieh was built in 1865.

15 . Alfred Holt Blue funnel line soup bowl and fruit bowl by D A S Nesbett and Co, Liverpool , 24cm diameter. £60-£80.

The following 45 lots were salvaged by Mike Hatcher in 1999, from the wreck of the trading junk Tek Sing (True Star) which sank off the Indonesian coast on 6th February 1822. Despite it's modest size being only 54m long and 10 m wide, it is often referred to as the Titanic of the East as over 1600 souls perished when it was lost.

A good early 20th century waterline model of HMS Victory in her first commission 1780, constructed from ships timbers by the artist Harold Wyllie (1880-1973), fully rigged with silver sails over African oak and ebony hull with detailed decks, blue and gilt gunwhales, the upper gun ports open with guns, on a cast bronze waterline base set in a carved wooden plinth, inscribed with battle honours, 68cm x 51cm x 36cm, together with two letters of provenance from Harold Wyllie, one on HMS Implacable headed notepaper the other on Alloway Place, Ayr headed paper, dated 1937 and 1945 respectively. £5000-£7000.

*Notes Harold Wyllie was the eldest son of the noted Marine artist William Wyllie (1851-1931). Following his fathers interests Harold became a significant artist in his own right, concentrating on the developments of the sailing ship in Royal Naval history. He became an expert in Marine Archaeology and was appointed to restore HMS Victory to her Trafalgar condition. His letters state that he was given the timbers from HMS Victory by Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock (1862-1914) who had commissioned him to build another model of the Victory. This model was commissioned by a Mr Adam Wood of Skeldon, Ayrshire who intended it to be used as a table centrepiece and ' it was therefore kept as simple as possible to avoid damage when shown out of the case'. the model was also exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1912 'as a piece of sculpture before ship models were prohibited from their galleries'. Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock KCVO CB SGM entered the Royal Navy in 1875, serving with distinction in the Mediterranean and was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1910. Stating that he would rather chose to die either hunting or engaged in battle he was killed in the in the pursuit of Admiral Spee's fleet during the First World war. Skeldon House was built in 1760 by General Fulleron to an Adams design. Purchased by the Duke of Portland in 1867 the house was improved in 1908 by the architect James Miller for Adam Wood. The whole estate was sold in 1926, at which time the model of HMS VIctory was acquired by the vendors grandfather.

HMS Amethyst was launched in 1943 and the following year was employed on convoy duties at . She is best known for the 1949 incident on the Yangtze River when caught in crossfire between the Chinese Communists and Nationalist at Nanking. The Chinese asserted a different version of events that the Amethyst had sunk a Chinese vessel and massacred the passengers. The ship and her crew were held hostage for three months while the British negotiated their release. On the evening of 30th July Amethyst slipped way and made a 168 mile dash to freedom. £1800-£2200.
