In many EU Member States, the local elections are held simulta- neously with the European elections providing a huge opportunity to link the two election campaigns. Against this background, we would like to provide you with some practical background material and answer your questions on how European decisions in various policy areas influence your municipality by means of this booklet ‘Local Benefi ts of Europe’. This booklet is based on a work that was done by the German Greens lead by Anna Cavazzini and Reinhard Bütikofer. The information can also help you prepare for your local election programmes or campaigns. We place particular emphasis on how the people in your community benefi t practically from Europe, ranging from (Secretary General EGP) environmental protection to structural Mar Garcia policy, and what the Greens in Europe have achieved for European communi- ties. If you need more information on a spe- cifi c topic - no problem: in each chapter, you will fi nd a contact person who has contributed to this handbook and can answer your questions. Im Juli 2015 verließ der Parteigründer Bernd Lucke die einstige „Anti-Euro-Partei“ aufgrund eines massiven Rechtsrucks – und die seitdem stattfindende Entwicklung gibt ihm recht. Das Auftreten der Partei hat sich erst zöger- lich, dann aber mit aller Macht grundlegend gewandelt. Mit aggressiven Parolen gegen Geflüchtete und den Islam setzt die neue Parteiführung auf gezielte Provokation. Getra- gen wird dies auch von einer neuen Parteibasis, die seit 2013 deutliche Veränderungen durchgemacht hat. In Auftreten und Sprache inszenieren sich die AfD gerne als Vertreter des „kleinen Mannes“. Ein großes Pfund für die Partei ist die Abstiegsangst großer Teile der Mittelschicht und der Geringverdiener. -

Nur gemeinsam mit unseren europäischen Partnern können wir tragfähige Lösungen erarbeiten und die Errungenschaften der europäischen Einigung – Frieden, Freiheit, Sicherheit und wirtschaftlicher Wohlstand – erhalten. Das Auftreten populistischer, europafeindlicher Parteien und der von Großbritannien angestrebte Austritt aus der EU dürfen nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass die überwältigende Mehrheit der Deutschen wie der Euro- päer von der Notwendigkeit der europäischen Einigung überzeugt ist. Dieses Vertrauen gilt es durch sachge- rechte politische Lösungen auf allen Ebenen zu stärken. Through a glass darkly 1 Briefing note June 2014 The new European Parliament: what to expect From 22 to 25 May 2014, Europeans went to the polls. Many of them went to express their dissatisfaction. Although the majority of the incoming 751 MEPs remain broadly supportive of the EU, both they and those who need to engage with the European Parliament will have to adapt to the increased power of a disparate anti-EU and anti- establishment minority over the next five years. This briefing provides an overview of the election results* at the EU level and what happens next, further analysis on results in France, Germany, Greece and the UK, a look at the key outgoing and incoming MEPs, and an examination of the selection procedures for the new leaders of the European Commission, European Parliament and European Council. The election results The election saw a marked rise, of about 10%, in the number of MEPs elected from anti-EU and anti-establishment parties from both ends of the political spectrum. They won around 230, or 31%, of the 751 seats, compared to 164, or 21%, of the 766 seats in 2009. What remains to be seen is whether the newly -elected MEPs will join existing, or form new, political groups in the Parliament (see below for more information on the importance of political groups and how they are formed). Despite their decreased numbers, the pro-Europeans remain the dominant force in the European Parliament. Their four groups – the centre-right, the centre-left, the liberals and the greens – won 521, or 69%, of the 751 available seats. -

Europe's Resource Grab Vested interests at work in the European Parliament Corporate Europe Observatory, 27 June 2011 On 30 June, the European Parliament’s industry, energy and research committee (ITRE) is due to vote on the EU’s Raw Materials Initiative, establishing guidelines for Europe's future policy on natural resource use. The Parliament’s report could effectively give the green light to mining in protected European nature reserves as well as a resource grab in Asia, Africa, the Americas and the Arctic. The vote follows fierce calls from a number of MEPs with close links to industry for European big business to be allowed to exploit other countries’ raw materials without any restrictions – via trade, development and even military policies. MEPs have also tried to block strong language in the report on the need to stop corporate abuse in the extraction sector and to reduce Europe’s over- consumption of raw materials. Several of the MEPs pushing this aggressive agenda are from the European People’s Party (EPP) and have close links to industry sectors which have a vested interest in the raw materials debate (Bendt Bendtsen – Denmark; Herbert Reul and Daniel Caspary – Germany). Others such as Paul Rübig MEP (EPP, Austria) seem to have clear conflicts of interest1. Rübig profits from companies which depend heavily on the access to cheap raw materials. He also has close connections with industry lobby groups which have tried to shape the EU’s Raw Materials Initiative. Nonetheless, Rübig is one of the lead persons in the debate in Parliament and has set up a cross-party group of MEPs, the European Raw Materials Group, which will follow the issue, working closely with a parallel industry group.
