The epic has central contribution of women in all aspect of life. Here the question is how do we locate women in the social institutional framework and what is their selfhood in the whole epic. This paper tries to study this issues with theoretico-analytical framework of socio-anthropological, indological and feminist perspective to analyse location of women in the social institutions like family, marriage, kinship, caste system/varna system, education, polity and economy along with existence of customs, traditions, organisations etc. to be strictly followed by women and at the same time analyse how women’s selfhood is evolved within the structure of power and authority throughout the epic of Mahabharata.     The Mahabharata and the Sindhu-Sarasvati Tradition Subhash Kak Introduction The Mahabharata as an encyclopaedia of early Indian culture and history may be expected to shed light on the Sindhu-Sarasvati (SS), or Indus, Tradition. For example, the Mahabharata and the Puranas call Visnu and Siva by the name Ekasrnga, the “one- horned one,” or the unicorn, which is one of the most striking images from the mature phase of the SS Tradition. The Santi-Parva (chapter 343) of the Mahabharata speaks of the one-tusked boar (Varaha) who saves the earth as Visnu’s incarnation. Here Varaha is described as being triple-humped, a figure that we see in the Harappan iconography. There is other continuity of motif and style between the SS Tradition and the classical Indian culture. Geologists tell us that the river Sutudri braided into several channels after its course changed from being a tributary of the Sarasvati to that of the Sindhu. The Epic remembers this in the legend that sage Vasistha wanted to kill himself by jumping into the Haimavati, but the river saved him by breaking up into a hundred shallow channels, hence its ancient name Satadru (Caitraratha Parva, chapter 179). This is example of an event in the Epic that occurred in the 4th or the 3rd millennium BC. The change in the focus of the civilization from the Sarasvati river to the Ganga is not only implicit in the Puranic story of the descent of Ganga but also in the statement in the Mahabharata (Vana Parva, chapter 85) that in the Treta Puskara was the holiest tirtha, in Dvapara it was Kurukshetra, and in the Kaliyuga it is Prayaga.

    MAHABHARAXA. 225 MAHABHARATA (Adiparva, ch. 94). There are references of the Kuru-Panchala war in the later Vedic and Sutra literature. But that the Pandu story of the Mahabharata Samhita, which gives the account of the two, rival families of the Kauravas, could not in any way be called Kuru-Panchala story, is beyond all doubt. As there is also mention in the later Yedic literature of the names of Dhritarastra, Parikshit, and Janamejaya, it is still supposed by some that the Pandu story, if not the same or a part of the Kuru-Panchala story, may be of equal antiquity. But I think it can be with some certainty shown from the Mahabharata itself that there was an old legend of a war between the Kurus and the Panchalas which had no relation whatever with the Pandu story. I refer the readers to the 94th chapter of the Adiparva, giving the history of the Puruvamsa from the remotest antiquity. It has been distinctly stated (slokas 34 to 50) that Raja Sambarana (who was a Bharata), being defeated by the Panchalas, had to live with his whole family in the mountainous regions of the Panjab for a long time. This Sambarana is said to be the father of Raja Kuru. With the help of the Rishi Yasistha, the Raja got back the lost kingdom, and could make all other Rajas (Panchalas not excepted) pay tribute to him. Kuru, son of Sambarana, founded Kurujangala, famous since then as Kurukshetra. We get also Janamejaya, Parikshit, and Dhritarastra as some subsequent Rajas in the same family (slokas 51-56), who are far removed from the Rajas of the same name mentioned in the Pandu story.

His fame and rule extended to all parts of the world. The qualities of self- control, liberality, forgiveness, intelligence, modesty, patience and power always resided this exalted emperor. His neck was marked with three lines like a conchshell, and his shoulders were broad. In prowess He resembled a maddened elephant. Above all these qualities, he was a devoted servant of Lord Vishnu, and therefore he was given the title, "King of kings". Once when Maharaja Shantanu, that bull among men, was wandering in the forest, he came upon a place frequented by the Siddhas and Charanas (a class of heavenly demigods). There he saw an angelic woman who appeared like the goddess of fortune herself. In truth, she was the personification of the river Ganges. She was glancing at the monarch with her youthful longing eyes, and Maharaja Shantanu became attracted to her. He then approached her inquiring, "O beautiful woman, are you from the race of the Gandharvas, Apsaras, Yakshas, Nagas or the human race? As yet I have no queen, and your birth appears divine. Whatever your origin, O celestial beauty, I request you to become my wife." The beautiful apsara (celestial maiden) then smilingly replied, "O King, I shall become your wife and obey your commands, but there are certain conditions.
