Speculative Geology
15 Speculative Geology DALE E. SNOW We are not at peace with nature now. Whether it is the record-setting rain on the east coast or the raging wildfires in the west, distant news of melting permafrost or bleaching coral reefs, or the unexpected eruption of Mount Kilauea a few miles from here, things seem increasingly, and increasingly violently, out of control. I would like to suggest that there are resources in Schelling’s Naturphilosophie we can use in the twenty-first century to help us think differently about both the power of nature and our own relationship to it. Although Schelling saw himself, and was seen by many, as antagonistic toward the mechanical science of his own time, it would be a mistake—and a missed opportunity—to see his view as a mere Romantic reaction. It is a speculative rethinking of the idea of nature itself that finds a place for even those phenomena which seem most distant and alien. Schelling described his philosophy of nature as “speculative physics” both to distinguish it from what he calls the dogmatic or mechanistic model of nature, and to announce a new approach to natural science, concerned with the original causes of motion in nature (SW III: 275). Since every “natural phenomenon … stands in connection with the last conditions of nature” (SW III: 279), speculative physics can bring us to an understanding of nature as a system. Geology presents an illuminating case of this approach, as can be seen from Schelling’s characteristically enthusiastic introduction to a paper published by Henrik Steffens in Schelling’sJournal of Speculative Physics (Zeitschrift für speculative Physik) on the oxidization and deoxidization of the earth.1 After praising Steffens’ work on a new and better founded science of geology, Schelling reflects darkly on the too long dominant mechanical approach to geology. -

There is interest in expanding yerba mate sales into the old and new markets by promoting its health properties and energizing effects. The research study aims to explore Argentinian and Italian purchasing and consumption behavior and perception of yerba mate. The exploration includes agro-food chain stakeholders’ views, and consumers’ habits, perception, knowledge of yerba mate in relation to other market positioning caffeine-containing products. Data collection includes qualitative method, such as interviews with agro-food chain stakeholders, that is producers, processors, consumers, and quantitative consumer survey. Data collection was carried out in Argentina and in Italy. Results show that in Argentina yerba mate consumption is driven by habit and tradition, and in Italy yerba mate is mostly unknown. Consumers tend to drink yerba mate in Argentina and other caffeine-containing beverages in Italy Citation: Samoggia, A.; Landuzzi, P.; to socialize, and as source of energy. Knyga, skatinanti optimizmą: Lietuvos muzika gerėja. Ar tikrai? Išvados Vietoje pratarmės. Ir kada gi jūs nustosite groti? Jei galite negroti, negrokite. Apie tuos, kurie negali, čia kalbėsime. Knyga, skatinanti optimizmą: Lietuvos muzika gerėja. Ar tikrai? Knyga sudaryta atsitiktinai renkantis jau parašytus tekstus. Garsų šukės, garsų kontūrai, garsų spalvos, balta muzika, garsai po smūgio, garsai be scenos, garso vaiduokliai, Lietuvos akustikai... Knyga skirta Kūrybos Laisvei. Nors jos autorius vienas, tačiau žmonių, kuriems norisi padėkoti, labai, labai daug. TEKSTAI Lietuvos kultūros mikroerdvės ir mikroepochos XX–XXI a. -

Te use of medicinal plants mixed with yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) has been poorly studied in the ethnopharmacological literature so far. Te Paraguayan Mestizo people have the longest tradition of using the yerba mate beverage, apart from the indigenous Guarani people. Tis study analyses the role of yerba mate and medicinal plants in the treatment of illnesses within Paraguayan folk medicine. Te research was conducted among 100 Paraguayan migrants living in Misiones, Argentina, in 2014 and 2015. Yerbamate is not considered to be a medicinal plant by its own virtues but is culturally a very important type of medicinal plant intake. Ninety-seven species are employed in hot and cold versions of the yerba mate beverage. Te most important species are as follows: Allophylus edulis (highest number of citations), Aristolochia triangularis (highest relative importance value), and Achyrocline faccida and Achyrocline tomentosa (highest score by Index of Agreement on Species). -

Impact of Processing Conditions on the Milk Clotting Activity of Crude Protease Extracted from Chinese Ginger
2011 International Conference on Food Engineering and Biotechnology IPCBEE vol.9 (2011) © (2011)IACSIT Press, Singapoore Impact of Processing Conditions on the Milk Clotting Activity of Crude Protease Extracted from Chinese Ginger + Malik Muhammad Hashim 1, Muhammad Farooq Iqbal 2, Chen Xiaohong 1and Dong Mingsheng 1 1 College of Food Science and Technology, Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing 210095, China 2 Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Arid Agricultural University, Rawalpindi, Pakistan Abstract. The impact of three processing parameters namely homogenization time, pH of buffer, and amount of buffer, involved in the liquid extraction of proteinases from ginger rhizomes, was investigated on milk coagulating activity by response surface methodology. An empirical quadratic model was applied to experimental data pertaining to the average enzymatic activity and equation describing the optimal conditions was obtained. The maximum milk clotting activity (274 U/mL) was obtained by homogenizing the ginger rhizomes in 76 mL of extraction buffer with a pH of 7.0 for 2.4 min. No significant (p > 0.05) difference was observed between the experimental and predicted values. These results are useful in the optimization of extraction procedures, which are of significant relevance to the production of standardized plant coagulants suitable for the cheese industry. Keywords: Ginger protease, Plant coagulant, Response surface methodology 1. Introduction Proteolytic enzymes or proteases are very important industrial enzymes, accounting for nearly 60% of the total worldwide enzyme production [1]. Plant-derived proteases such as papain, bromelain, ficin, and calotropins have potential application in food and biotechnological industries due to their broad substrate specificity, high stability in extreme conditions, good solubility and activity over a wide range of pH and temperature. -
