July 6, 2014 My Dear Friends and Festival Supporters, This year’s 10th Annual Festival of the Aegean is truly a milestone. Just 10 years ago, it would have been impossible for me to have imagined that the very first notes of Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia on July 1, 2005, would lead to a unique, thriving, and critically-acclaimed series of events and concerts, which are coinciding today with the 150th Anniversary of the Apollo Theater, “La piccola Scala.” I remember coming to Syros from Mykonos some years ago, wondering if it was really possible that there was a great opera theater on this small but important Cycladic Island. But from the moment I walked up the 11 steps and through the doors and into the theater, my doubts were blown away. This was the same feeling, I might add, that I had experienced when I entered Carnegie Hall for the first time on November 24, 1983. How was it possible that there was such a magnificent theater on this Cycladic Island? I consider myself so fortunate to have arrived at the theater at that particular time in my life. Immediately, I could envision the possibility of presenting a Festival based in the Apollo Theater, and since 2005 that possibility has become an annual reality. Now, ten years and more than a hundred performances later, with the support of the Friends of the Festival, we have presented thousands of world-class artists, including 55 choruses, 10 orchestras, hundreds of soloists, directors, technical support staff, and members of the Greek Opera Studio in 16 operas, Plateia 2 concerts, sacred music concerts, children’s concerts, ballet, theater, popular music, jazz, 3 symphonies, and oratorios, to appreciative audiences.

Surtitles.com articles in full WAGNER IS LETTER PERFECT The Canadian Opera Company’s impressive new production of Lohengrin is the first occasion I have totally enjoyed a Wagner opera. There have been passages of peak pleasure in the past, yet it seemed highly unlikely I would ever spend four hours in the O’Keefe Centre as a contented captive of Hitler’s favorite composer. The reason for this transformation was not hard to discover, being written in foot-high letters on the proscenium of the stage. Surtitles, the COC-developed technique for projecting a running, capsulized translation in English of a foreign-language opera’s libretto, is a marvellous boon. Those prepared by Gunta Dreifelds for Lohengrin were pungent and erudite. Secure in knowing exactly who is doing what to whom and why, one can bask contented, allowing the often glorious music to soothe the soul. Wagner’s subtle blending of four trumpeters (heralds) on stage with others in the orchestra had a particularly haunting beauty. Vocally, this was a mixed opening night with the few disappointments offset by some unexpected pleasures. You could sense the widespread dismay when general director Lotfi Mansouri craved audience indulgence, at the outset, on behalf of American soprano Janis Martin. She would continue to sing the role of Ortrud, he said, despite being indisposed with a cold. As the applause thundered at the close for this truly Wagnerian-sized interpreter of his works, all one could suggest was she had either been gifted with a miraculous cure or had given one of the greatest germ-defying performances of the century.

The company maintained its commitment to presenting a wide-ranging lineup of new productions, offering eight new stagings in the 2009–10 season, followed by seven the next year. Eleven of these productions were seen in movie theaters around the world as part of the Met’s Live in HD series, which continued to expand and provide a bright spot to the company’s financial outlook. As the world’s leading producer of alternative cinema content, the Met’s Live in HD series pushed the company’s earned revenues to record levels. The Met’s worldwide HD earnings were $27 million and $31 million, respectively, in 2009–10 and 2010–11. Combined earned revenues for the Met (HD and Met box office) equaled $119 million in 2009–10 and grew to $126 million in 2010–11. A total of 21 HD programs and 205 audio transmissions were produced during these two fiscal years, adding significantly to the Met’s rich library of intellectual content. The 2009–10 Season The 2009–10 season proved to be an extraordinary showcase for the artistry of the world’s greatest singers, conductors, directors, and designers. Such acclaimed directors as Patrice Chéreau, Richard Eyre, Bartlett Sher, and Mary Zimmerman, among others, created new productions for the Met.
