University of Tlemcen, BP119 13000 Algeria 2IMBE, CNRS, IRD, Aix-Marseille University, France *Corresponding author: [email protected] ABSTRACT A study on diversity of ground beetle communities (Coleoptera Carabidae) was conducted between March 2011 and February 2012 in the temporary pond: Dayet El Ferd (listed as a Ramsar site in 2004) located in a steppe area on the northwest of Algeria. The samples were collected bimonthly at 6 sampling plots and the gathered Carabidae were identified and coun - ted. A total of 55 species belonging to 32 genera of 7 subfamilies were identified from 2893 collected ground beetles. The most species rich subfamilies were Harpalinae (35 species, 64%) and Trechinae (14 species, 25.45%), others represented by one or two species. Accord- ing to the total individual numbers, Cicindelinae was the most abundant subfamily compris- ing 38.81% of the whole beetles, followed by 998 Harpalinae (34.49%), and 735 Trechinae (25.4%), respectively. The dominant species was Calomera lunulata (Fabricius, 1781) (1087 individuals, 37.57%) and the subdominant species was Pogonus chalceus viridanus (Dejean, 1828) (576 individuals, 19.91%). -

The effectiveness of the system was studied by tak- ing photos of 165 insect species including some subspecies from museum collections (105 Coleoptera, 11 Hemi ptera (Pentatomidae), 12 Hymenoptera, 10 Lepidoptera, 9 Mantodea, 4 Odonata, 13 Orthoptera, 1 Phasmatodea) and 16 living insect species (1 Lepidoptera, 3 Mantodea, 4 Orthoptera, 8 Phasmato- dea), from which four are exemplarily pictured herein. The system is based on a modifi ed standard consumer DSLR camera (Canon Rebel XSi), which was altered for two-channel colour infrared photography. The camera is especially sensitive in the spectral range of 700-800 nm, which is well- suited to visualize small scale spectral differences in the steep of increase in refl ectance in this range, as it could be seen in some species. Several of the investigated species show at least a partial infrared refl ectance. -

Coleoptera Carabidae) Diversity Patterns in Forest Habitats of High Conservation Value, Southern Bulgaria
Biodiversity Journal, 2015, 6 (1): 341–352 MONOGRAPH Ground beetles (Coleoptera Carabidae) diversity patterns in forest habitats of high conservation value, Southern Bulgaria Rumyana Kostova Sofia University, Faculty of Biology, Department of Zoology and Anthropology, 8 “DraganTzankov” blvd., Sofia 1164, Bulgaria; e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT The study presents a comparison between the diversity of the carabid beetles taxocoenoses and their spatial distribution in different forest types of high conservation value in Strandzha (8 sites), the Rhodopes (4 sites) and Belasitsa (6 sites) mountains. The diversity indices have demonstrated the highest species richness and the highest diversity values in the riverside sites of Strandzha Mountain. The lowest species richness has been found in the tertiary relict forest of oriental beech with undergrowth of rhododendron (Strandzha Mountain) and in the century- old sweet chestnut forest (Belasitsa Mountain). The lowest values of diversity and evenness have been found in the beech forest sites in Strandzha and the Rhodopes due to the prevalence of the Aptinus species. This low diversity is a natural condition for the studied sites. The classification of the ground beetles complexes from the studied sites by similarity indices and TWINSPAN has been made. A high level of dissimilarity among the sites has been found, showing unique species composition and abundance models in each site. Carabid beetles taxocoenoses in the forests of Strandzha Mountain have shown a low similarity level by species composition and abundance even in the range of the same mountain. Indicator species have been shown. The ordination of the carabid complexes has showed that the sites have been distributed continuously along two significant gradients. -
The Ground Beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) of Three Horticultural Farms in Lombardy, Northern Italy ()
Boll. Zool. agr. Bachic. 31 dicembre 2007 Ser. II, 39 (3): 193-209 D. LUPI, M. COLOMBO, S. FACCHINI The ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) of three horticultural farms in Lombardy, Northern Italy () Abstract - Ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) were surveyed across three hor- ticultural farms, located in a peri-urban area, in the Po plain in Lombardy (Northern Italy) from April 2003 to March 2005. Their biodiversity was estimated using pitfall traps. A total of 29 genera and 39 species were collected. Notes on ants and spiders presence were also furnished. Land use seemed to have a significant effect on the number and composition of the species: catches were lower in the conventional farm and higher in biological farms. Apart from land use, all the species detected have already been recorded as frequent in agricultural fields and are characteristic of lowland agroecosystem in Northern Italy. -
