This phenomenon is analyzed in two different but complementary studies and perspectives, each of which contributes to a better understanding of the sociolinguistic factors that constrain its variation, as well as the social meanings of this feature in Argentina. Study 1 investigates whether position in the intonational phrase (IP), vowel concordance, and social class and gender condition pretonic vowel lengthening from informal conversations with native speakers (n=20). -

Quícoli, Co-Chair Professor Norma Mendoza-Denton, Co-Chair This dissertation examines onset and coda /s/ lenition in the Spanish of El Salvador, a dialect in which this phenomenon is particularly advanced. That is, Salvadoran /s/ weakening is not only pervasive in both syllabic positions but manifests as allophones beyond the traditional tripartite conception. In addition to providing the first sociophonetic account of /s/ in El Salvador, this dissertation aims to address another gap in the literature: while /s/ weakening is the most- studied phonological variable in the history of the field, many accounts fail to make connections between observed patterns and important aspects of phonological theory. In my analysis I show that these connections, which are highly reliant on phonetic principles, are crucial to a more complete understanding of the phenomenon at hand. -

The Rapa Nui (Polynesian)-Spanish bilingual community of Easter Island, Chile has been experiencing language shift: toward Spanish over the last four decades. At the same time, however, political struggles over land, political decision-making rights, and control over the heritage tourism economy have been converging to lead the Rapa Nui community to publicly and intensively assert and reconstruct their cultural identity. AJthough the majority of Rapa Nui children today are native and dominant speakers of Spanish, their positive ethnic identification and participation in public cultural activities and in bilingual and syncretic conversational interactions are providing opportunities for community revaluation and maintenance of their ancestral language. Using ethnographic and linguistic analysis of face-to-face verbal interaction, this article examines the role of children in the dynamics of sociolinguistic changes and the construction of the ethnolinguistic community. BRAND This article initiates a series in which the writer will attempt to summarize the scattered and commonly contradictory material on the present ethnic and linguistic constituency of a number of Latin Ameri- can countries. It represents some personal investigations in the field and an examination of much of the pertinent literature. Chile has been a sovereign state since the War of Independence 1810-26. This state was founded upon a nuclear area west of the Andean crest and essentially between 240 and 460 South Latitude. Through the War of the Pacific with Bolivia and Perui in 1879-1883 and peaceful agreements with Argentina, Chile acquired her present extention from Arica to Tierra del Fuego. These northern and south- ern acquisitions added little to her population but introduced numerous small ethnic and linguistic groups. Chile has taken national censuses in 1835, 1843, 1854, 1865, 1875, 1885, 1895, 1907, 1920, 1930, and the most recent one in November of 1940. -

Lorain Puerto Rican Spanish and ‘r’ in Three Generations Michelle F. Ramos-Pellicia George Mason University 1. Problem Retroflex ‘r’ in coda position, has been documented in the Spanish of the Yucatan Peninsula, central areas of Costa Rica, Belize, other parts of Central America, as well as in the US Southwest (Alonso 1930; Cassano 1973, 1977; Figueroa and Hislope 1998; Hagerty 1996; Lastra de Suárez 1975; Lipski 1994; Orenstein 1974; Sánchez 1972). In these dialects, the retroflex pronunciation generally has been assumed to result from American English (AE) influence, but the cause has not been directly studied. The analysis of retroflex /r/ in Puerto Rican Spanish in Lorain, Ohio --where contact with English is ongoing and variable-- presents counterevidence to the hypothesized AE source of retroflex /r/. In this article, I discuss the frequency patterns of use for ‘r’ among three generations of Puerto Ricans in Lorain, Ohio. The retroflex ‘r’ is most common in the third generation, a fact which is consistent with AE influence. However, if AE were the source, we would expect the lowest frequency of the retroflex in the first generation Puerto Ricans, as they are presumed to have the least contact with English. In fact, however, first generation speakers use a retroflex ‘r’ in their readings in Spanish more frequently than the second generation. The AE influence explanation is, then, problematic, and despite the evidence from the second and third generations, the occurrence of ‘r’ in the first generation cannot be attributed solely to AE influence. In addition to offering possible explanations of the data, I discuss methodological issues in the operationalization and measurement of 'language contact'. -

The linguistic debate in Chile: ideologies and representations of languages and multilingual practices in the national online news HANNA SLIASHYNSKAYA Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Newcastle University School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences July 2019 ii Abstract Linguistic ideologies, or beliefs about languages and their use, are key to dynamics and changes in language choice, language minorisation and death. Linguistic ideologies, especially those of monolingualism, have long been part of nation-states’ policies (Shohamy, 2006; Fairclough, 2015) despite the prevalence of multilingualism in social domains (Meyerhoff, 2008). Chile, the context of this research project, is a multilingual country with a surprisingly limited amount of language legislation (Leclerc, 2015) most of which focuses on governmental plans to make Chile bilingual by 2030 (Minsegpres, Mineduc and Minec, 2014) and the foreign language education in schools, namely, the teaching of English, the only foreign language taught in public schools since 2010. At the same time, the use of indigenous languages is not regulated, and Spanish is the de facto official language. In view of such laissez-faire regulations of Chile’s linguistic setting, it is crucial to explore public domains beyond language policy to explain the ongoing minoritisation of indigenous languages and the growth of the dominant languages. Thus, this thesis examines how dominant and minoritised languages are represented in popular national online newspapers. The collected data includes 8877 news articles published in ten most widely-read Chilean online newspapers between 2010 and 2016 and containing references to Chile’s local (Mapudungún, Rapa Nui, Aimara, Quechua, Yámana, Huilliche, Qawasqar, Kunza and Spanish) and foreign languages (English), as well as variously labelled multilingual practices, such as bilingualism and multilingualism. -
