Sunday 6th June 2021 Victoria Baptist Church News Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “ Go south to the road - the desert road - that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch ... Acts 8:26,27 The Bigger Picture Acts 8:26-40 Just before His arrest and subsequent crucifixion, Jesus spoke with His disciples and calls them to trust Him (John Chapter 14). He tells them amongst other things that He is going to prepare a place for them. He goes on to say that His followers would do as He had done and even greater things (v12-14) because He is going to the Father “Ask me for anything and I will do it in order to bring glory to the Father” and the point He makes is, as He goes, so the Father will send the Holy Spirit to be all that Jesus has been and He will enable them to continue the work. As we know – Jesus died and rose again, He ascended to the Father and the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, just as He said – equipping His relatively small band of disciples to spread the word. So what is this all about? Here we are 2000+ years later, the ‘Church’, the ‘people of God’, the ‘gathered community of believers’, you and I, 21st century people are still being challenged to follow in Jesus footsteps and experience the working of the Holy Spirit in our lives. But how? This morning we will consider Acts 8:26-40 and hopefully from this account of Philip and the Ethiopian we will see how we can be part of the bigger picture that Jesus was describing. Next Week Sunday 13th June - Family Service at 10am - and online as always. Jez Taylor will be continuing the Holy Spirit theme with his message on “The Benefits of Fruit”. 2 Staff/Office Matters A very warm welcome to Simon as he takes up his position as our Children & Families Worker. Chris is still on his sabbatical and will be returning on June 21st. Any queries for him should be directed to Sandra who will respond accordingly. Please remember that Erik & Sandra are both off on Thursdays, Colin on Mondays. Emma is coming towards the end of her college course and is involved in college work on Tuesdays. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting alongside the families here at VBC and it has been a real privilege to be in a position to help the children to grow in their faith and to equip parents to nurture their children’s spirituality. Thank you to all of you who have volunteered in any capacity – Sunday School, Vicky Bees, Messy Church, Girls and Boys Brigade, Kids Club, Football Club, and other family ministry events - we really couldn’t achieve what we do without you. I have also appreciated the support and friendship I have received from my “esteemed colleague”, Erik, who has taught me everything I know about using Publisher, converting PDF files and many other technical issues! We have spent many a happy hour decorating, creating, planning and plotting together! Please continue to pray for me as I take on my new role supporting Chris - I have a lot to learn. And please pray for and support Simon as he begins his work as Children and Families Worker. With much love - Sandra x … and from Simon On Thursday 20th May I taught my last music class. As the pupils stood to be dismissed, I realised what a privilege it had been to be able to teach these amazing children over the past 12 years. But there was no feeling of loss, no regret at leaving, just an overwhelming sense of peace and certainty that, where I was going was the place God wanted me to be. Now I’ve started and I’m raring to go! I’m excited to be able to build on the amazing work Sandra has been doing and put my stamp on children’s work going forward. I’m also looking forward to meeting all the children, and their families, as VBC starts to open up again. Please pray for God's guidance in everything I do and please come and introduce yourself to me. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to email me or give me a call. God bless you all - Simon 4 Outdoor Praise Following on from the outdoor worship on Pentecost Sunday a few people have asked if this could be repeated. Rebekah and Daniel Fairhead are happy to lead another one next Sunday 13th June - same time as before, 3pm, and same venue, at the bottom of the slope in the garden area. The format will also be similar to last time with the whole thing lasting around 45 minutes. If you would like to come, please book in the usual way by e-mail (preferably) or by ringing the office. Church Meeting A church meeting for members is scheduled for July. The date has been confirmed as Wednesday 14th July, at 7.30pm. Football Club For a number of years, we have been running a midweek football club for our youngsters, latterly at Cavendish School Sports Centre, opposite VBC. Pete Revell has been heading this up with Geoff Pulling and a number of keen dads. They have now decided though that they need to pass on the mantle to someone else so we want to take this opportunity of thanking Pete and the team for the great job they have done in keeping this going for so long. If you would be interested in finding out more about this club and would like to consider leading or helping out when it restarts - hopefully in September - please let us know in the office and we will try to answer any queries you may have. Thank You! “I am sending many thanks to my lovely church family for the flowers, many cards and best wishes for my 92nd birthday. I was so blessed with sunshine for my 3 days with family. Our Heavenly Father answered my prayers. May God bless you all.” Audrey Brown 5 CAP Update It's been a busy few months for the CAP Debt Centre, with May and June both fully booked with new clients. Most exciting of all, we're now able to meet clients in person. To date, we've been doing this on the church premises, but from next week, we'll be meeting clients at their home, which is a huge step forward. This week we saw a client go debt free, which is a fabulous answer to prayer. We continue to be able to support our clients and families with food shops and boxes. For some clients, this makes a huge difference in their lives. Thank you to all those who have made this generosity possible. As we move towards more face-to-face appointments, our team of 3 (wonderful) befrienders are becoming more and more in demand. We also need support in doing food shops, and other adhoc support as required. If you're interested, please do get in touch with me - particularly if you're able to support during the working day. Psalm 145 is a source of strength and purpose to me this week, please do spend a few minutes reading it, whilst keeping the work of our CAP debt centre in your prayers. "The Lord is trustworthy in all He promises, and faithful in all He does." Helen Diplock Life Groups We are looking to start a new lunchtime Life Group based at VBC on a Tuesday or Thursday lunchtime. At present we have no members - or a leader - for this group but interest in such a group has been expressed. If you feel called to step up to the plate and lead it, or if this feels like it might fulfil a need for you, please let Jez know 6 Congratulations! Quite a week of happy events! Anna Ribeiro married Izaak Smith recently. Proud dad Suail sent this photo of the happy couple after they had tied the knot. Many congratulations to them both. But they have a long way to go to catch up with Gavin and Pearl Rendall who this week celebrated their 65th anniversary! Huge congratulations to you both on reaching this tremendous milestone. On a different tack, we were delighted to hear of the safe arrival of baby Aaron on Wednesday this week. Ala & Sepideh had been coming along to VBC prior to the pandemic and we look forward to meeting the new arrival when restrictions are lifted. And finally, many congratulations to Louise Hughes’ son, Ben, who has just passed his driving test.
