The professionals in the industry have therefore awarded the 100-hectare site of the Zollverein Coal Mine and Coking Plant as Germany‘s most popular event destination on several occasions. Viewed from the outside, the building ensemble with a total event area of 14,000 square metres presents itself with clear- cut architectural structures. Inside, the halls and rooms reveal their individual character and impressively reflect the era of heavy industry. Experience industrial culture in a contemporary form: the seven unique event rooms and halls of Zollverein Foundation are ap- proved as meeting places and can be perfectly combined with each other, because together they show the full potential of the site. The magical and unmistakable atmosphere of the industrial monument as a whole turns every event into an unforgettable experience. It comprises two rooms that can be used separately or in combination. The Switching Hall with a floor area of 230 square metres can, as a closed room, be completely blacked out and is therefore ideally suited for presentations. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, the purist room served as a cinema for several years. Today, it is pre-equipped for stage situations. A stairway leads up to the open-plan Converter Hall with a floor area of 290 square metres and two historical converters. The gigantic machines create a special atmosphere for catering during breaks or a successful dinner. Located right next to the famous twin pithead frame, the venue is an ideal location for lectures, meetings and smaller conferences. “The panel discussion was a great, well-organised event. The participants were delighted with the location.” Olaf Dreßel, Publishing Director / Events, RevierSport – the sports magazine 6 7 Hall 5 Where sparks used to fly: in the central workshop, ironsmiths worked red-hot iron and locksmiths repaired tools and materials. Today, the plain Hall 5 impresses with its generous dimensions and graphic structures. With an area of approximately 800 square metres and a ceiling height of 10 metres, this location is ideal for major events such as conferences, exhibitions or concerts. The hall can be accessed by vehicle at ground level and provides ideal conditions for the installation of complex event technology. Hall 5 has also proved its worth as an exhibition space: the clean interior design sets the scene for every exhibit. The highlight is the working mobile crane runway on the hall ceiling, which with a lift- ing capacity of 10 tons can be used in various ways. Therefore, the location is perfect for large stagings and events. “The fact that our customer was able to celebrate such a great anniversary at Zollverein is not least due to the excellent and supportive collaboration with the Zollverein Foundation team. In the future, we will certainly make every effort to recommend the Zollverein World Heritage Site to our clients as an outstanding event location, and personally, I am looking forward to working there again. Good luck!” Wolfgang J. König, Key Account Manager, POOLgroup GmbH 8 9 “We felt very comfortable during the MICE Club LIVE at Zollverein. The participants gave us their enthusiastic feedback that they got to know great locations on site.” Dominik Deubner, Managing Director, DOMSET LIVE-KOMMUNIKATION Hall 6 During operating times of the coal mine, this hall accommodated the electrical workshop. On the upper floor, the overmen and visitors to Shaft XII had a wash in the VIP pithead baths. With its two storeys and a floor area of 195 square metres, Hall 6 is suitable for smaller conferences, lectures and workshops with up to 80 people or as a venue full of atmosphere for a dinner with selected guests. Due to add-on rooms on the ground and first floor, the hall can be extended by about 100 square metres to accommodate seminars and workshops. Being situated in the immediate vicinity of Hall 5, the location can also be used as a backstage area, thus creating valuable synergy effects. The spiral staircase leading to the gallery is an eye-catcher. The entire hall can be viewed from up there. The spatial separation also makes the gallery a perfect place for a lounge zone. 10 11 Hall 12 The interiors of the former Picking Belt Hall impress with their versatile avail- able space for complex events such as concerts, galas, congresses or consumer shows. A large event hall with a floor area of 850 square metres and numerous adjoining rooms extend over three levels. In the 1990s, the first conversion of the industrial premises took place in Hall 12: the large room on the first floor was converted into a rehearsal stage for the Aalto-Theater and is now equipped with a truss system. The foyer on the upper floor is ideal for receptions and features an absolute eye-catcher: the above-ground produc- tion facilities of the disused coal mine, which have been preserved in their original condition, are visible through a glass wall – an impressive fusion of past and present. The entrance area on the ground floor, with an additional foyer, a small hall and separate break-out rooms, pro- vides flexible space for a cloakroom, back office or meeting areas. On the “The highly competent and always committed support from the Zollverein Foundation mezzanine level, four dressing rooms staff has made a decisive contribution to the success of the conference of ministers of for artists allow for professional back- education and cultural affairs in 2014.” Sylvia Löhrmann, Minister for School and stage support. They gave the salt store its name. Today, the place fascinates with its contrast between rugged concrete walls and contemporary art. Since 2001, the former salt store has housed the accessible, spi- ral-shaped “Palace of Projects” by the artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov – a wooden structure covered with white cloth, which corresponds to the impressive timber framework of the hall and is a poetic eye-catcher. The inspiring spatial installation in the 750-square metre hall with a ceiling height of 12.80 metres and underfloor heating creates an exclusive setting for conferences, discussions and cultural events. “Together, we have accomplished another wonderful evening at the Zollverein World Heritage Site: The preview was a great success!” Alexander Peitz, Production Management WDR Cologne 14 15 w Mixing Plant At this extraordinary place on the “black side” of the coking plant, coal of varying qualities was mixed for coke production until 1993. The bizarre beauty of the Mixing Plant enchants visitors on three levels and a total floor area of approximately 2,000 square metres. The open-work walls of the huge coal bunkers built of concrete and with inserted intermediate floors provide fascinating insights into a production
