ESSEN INSPIRES WITH CULTURE KULTUR-FÖRDERUNG GESUCHT. GENO BANK GEFUNDEN. MEHR INFOS GenoKultur_hock_2.indd 4 18.12.13 10:02 “Culture is no ornament. It is the foundation on which our society stands and on which it is built.” - this is a ”quote from a report by the German Federal Parliament Enquete Commission “Culture in Germany”. And the city of Essen has culture in abundance. And not just since it was Capital of Culture in 2010. Essen is also a diverse city, oering, in addition to its world-renowned opera houses, theatres and museums, an equally dyna- mic scene of independent theatre, music, art and pain- ting, full of passion and often thanks to committed vo- lunteers. This diversity is also reflected in the venues: old factory workshops and industrial culture zones - re- lics from the steel and “black gold” era - can be found here alongside classic concert halls or converted sitting rooms. In both cases, a profound passion for art and culture is the result. With close links to the city of Essen and its cultural life, the GENO BANK has been at the heart of the Ruhr area for 130 years; the motto of the cooperative bank is “Achieve more in Essen”. For this reason it has been involved in the promotion and fun- ding of local cultural life for many years now. Marketing the cultural location of Essen both locally and nationally and arousing the curiosity of both residents and visitors to the city are key tasks for EMG – Essen Marketing GmbH, something it has been doing since it was found- ed in 1996. Be inspired by this brochure and embark on an exciting tour of discovery through the cultural landscape of Essen. 02 www.visitessen.de 03 INDEX History Cultural Projects and Events Monument Trail 5 Old Synagogue 5 Kulturpfad 20 The Essen Cathedral and Kunstspur Essen 20 its Treasure 6 Art Walk 21 State Archive 6 C.A.R. 21 Ruhr Museum 7 107 Culture Tram 21 St. Ludgerus Treasure Chamber 7 Culture Centres Industrial Culture Kettwig Old Station 22 Over the decades 8 ARKA Cultural Workshop 22 UNESCO World Heritage Site Mayor’s House Werden 23 Zollverein 8 Art and Architecture Forum 23 Margarethenhöhe 9 Deutsch-Französisches Portal of Industrial Heritage 9 Kulturzentrum 23 Villa Hügel 9 Kreuzeskirche Forum 23 GREND Culture Centre 24 Music/Concerts Kunsthaus Essen 24 Maschinenhaus Essen 24 Parksounds 10 Borbeck Castle 25 Aalto Theater 10 Unperfekthaus 25 Jazz Vision Ruhr 10 Carl Mine 25 ChorForum Essen 11 ESSEN.ORIGINAL. 11 Literature and Folkwang Chamber Orchestra 11 Education Folkwang Music Scholl 12 Grugahalle 12 Literatur: Lit.RUHR 26 JOE Jazz Offensive Essen 12 Folkwang University of the Arts 26 Philharmonie Essen 13 Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities 27 Play/Theatre Media Forum of the Diocese of Essen 27 Das Kleine Theater Essen 13 Volkshochschule Essen 27 der leere raum 13 Central Library 27 Grillo Theater 14 Katakomben Theater 14 Cinema and RÜ-Bühne 15 Entertainment Sago Hinterhoftheater 15 Studio Bühne Essen 15 CinemaxX 28 Theater Courage 15 Lichtburg Essen 28 Theater Extra 16 Colosseum Theater 29 Freudenhaus Theater 16 GOP Varieté-Theater Essen 29 Theatre in the Town Hall 16 Stratmanns Theater 29 Theater THESTH 16 Art in Public Space Museums/Exhibitions Trautmann Arboretum 30 Market and Showman Museum 17 Grugapark Essen 30 Museum Folkwang 17 Kunst am Moltkeplatz 30 Policing history Collection 18 Red Dot Design Museum 18 Soul of Africa Museum 18 Dance Tipp: Aalto Ballett Theater 19 PACT Zollverein 19 ESSEN CULTURE is the joint project between EMG – Essen Marketing GmbH and the culture office of the city of Essen.
