Sounds of War and Peace: Soundscapes of European Cities in 1945 10 This book vividly evokes for the reader the sound world of a number of Eu- Renata Tańczuk / Sławomir Wieczorek (eds.) ropean cities in the last year of the Second World War. It allows the reader to “hear” elements of the soundscapes of Amsterdam, Dortmund, Lwów/Lviv, Warsaw and Breslau/Wrocław that are bound up with the traumatising experi- ences of violence, threats and death. Exploiting to the full methodologies and research tools developed in the fields of sound and soundscape studies, the Sounds of War and Peace authors analyse their reflections on autobiographical texts and art. The studies demonstrate the role urban sounds played in the inhabitants’ forging a sense of 1945 Soundscapes of European Cities in 1945 identity as they adapted to new living conditions. Some, like Warsaw and Dresden, were almost completely destroyed, and became symbols both of war- time barbarism and of the recuperative power of their respective nations. Others, like Wrocław (previously Breslau) and Lviv (previously Lwów-Lvov), were assigned by the signatories of international treaties to a dierent state, and consequently gained new populations. For many inhabitants of European cities, 1945 was a year of hope and of a return to normality; for others, however, it was the year when they were forced to leave the place they called home. ese dramatic changes marked people’s lives. ey also aected the sensual experience of city life, as soundscapes underwent radical transformations. We asked researchers representing various disciplines and academic centres about the specic qualities of European city soundscapes in that watershed year when war came to an end, the reception of those soundscapes and their represen- tation in autobiographical texts and in art. is topic is important to us for both scientic and personal reasons. We live in Wrocław – a city which until May 1945 was the German Breslau. Toward the end of World War II, this city was converted into a fortress, the defence of which cost the lives of many thousands of its inhabit- ants and led to destruction on an enormous scale. e Germans – who had lived in Breslau for many generations – were displaced and exiled. eir place was taken by our grandparents and relatives, among others, whose task it became to rebuild and to grow accustomed to this unfamiliar, “alien” city. Wrocław’s unique history of transformation has inspired us – as researchers specialising in contemporary and historical soundscapes, in cultural phenomena and sound studies1– to address the issues mentioned above. 1 We are the sta of the Soundscape Research Studio founded by Robert Losiak at the Institute of Cultural Studies of the University of Wrocław in 2009. e Studio conducts research in the areas of soundscape studies and sound studies, as well as engages in education. e Studio’s most important project thus far has been a multi- faceted study of the soundscapes of contemporary Wrocław, the results of which have been described in a monographic publication (Audiosfera Wrocławia [e sounds of Wrocław], ed. Robert Losiak and Renata Tańczuk (Wrocław: Wydawnictwo Uni- wersytetu Wrocławskiego, 2014), 402 pp.), and an online soundmap of the city. e Studio also publishes the periodical Soundscape. Big indicator of "call a rabbit a smeerp"; and generally, a given name turns up on page 1... 2: Large scale conspiracies over large time scales that remain secret and don't fall apart. (This is not *explicitly* limited to SF, but appears more often in branded-cyberpunk than one would hope for a subgenre borne out of Bruce Sterling being politically realistic in a zine.) Pretty much *any* form of large-scale space travel. Low earth orbit, not so much; but, human beings in tin cans going to other planets within the solar system is an expensive multi-year endevour that is unlikely to be done on a more regular basis than people went back and forth between Europe and the americas prior to steam ships. Forget about interstellar travel. Any variation on the old chestnut of "robots/ais can't be emotional/creative". On the one hand, this is realistic because human beings have a tendency for othering other races with beliefs and assumptions that don't hold up to any kind of scrutiny (see, for instance, the relatively common belief in pre-1850 US that black people literally couldn't feel pain). On the other hand, we're nowhere near AGI right now and it's already obvious to everyone with even limited experience that AI can be creative (nothing is more creative than a PRNG) and emotional (since emotions are the least complex and most mechanical part of human experience and thus are easy to simulate).

Ossolińskich i jego zbiory w latach 1817‒1939 Abstrakt: Celem prezentowanego artykułu jest ukazanie dziejów i zbiorów Zakładu Narodowego im. Ossolińskich w latach 1817‒1939. Za pomocą analizy zachowanych dokumentów oraz istniejącej literatury przedmiotu starano się nie tylko ukazać hi- storię instytucji, wybrane kolekcje z zasobów biblioteki, ale także przedstawić jej organizację oraz ludzi, którzy na przestrzeni przeszło 120 lat przewinęli się przez jej mury. Jest to tym ważniejsze, że w przeciwieństwie do wielu innych polskich bibliotek nigdy nie napisano całościowej historii Ossolineum. Przyczyną tej sytuacji było to, że po 1945 r. niemal wszystkie archiwalia mogące służyć poznaniu dziejów Zakładu pozostały we Lwowie, zaś dostęp do nich był dla polskich badaczy bar- dzo utrudniony, a czasami nawet wręcz niemożliwy. Sytuacja ta zaczęła się powoli zmieniać po 1989 r. Wtedy też powstały mniejsze lub większe prace przyczynkarskie dotyczące dziejów Ossolineum. Dopiero od niedawna na rynku księgarskim zaczęły się pojawiać szersze publikacje ukazujące różne aspekty funkcjonowania Zakładu Narodowego im. Ossolińskich. Zgodnie z zamierzeniami fundatora instytucja ta zło- żona z biblioteki, wydawnictwa oraz muzeum miała nie tylko gromadzić różnego rodzaju druki, rękopisy, dzieła sztuki, ale także udostępniać swoje zbiory wszystkim zainteresowanym. Data początkowa artykułu wyznaczona została przez powołanie Zakładu, do którego doszło w 1817 r.

Celem tej książki jest przedstawienie Czytelnikowi nierozwiązanych zagadek i mało znanych, ale ważnych epizodów z bogatej historii Świebodzic. Oczywiście moim zamierzeniem nie było tu zaprezentowa- nie wszystkich niewyjaśnionych dotąd spraw związanych z miastem, ale przedstawienie tylko tych najogólniejszych, na które wiele osób stawia dzisiaj pytania. Książka ta nie rości sobie również prawa do fundamentalnego dzieła. Chciałem tu tylko opisać najbardziej tajemnicze momenty z ponad siedemsetletniej historii miasta. Zawarte w tym opracowaniu tematy dotyczą zarówno kon- trowersyjnych wydarzeń, jak i rozmaitych skarbów ukrytych w okolicach miasta, historycznych postaci oraz tajemni- czych zabytków... Słowem, każdy z zainteresowanych znaj- dzie w niej coś ciekawego dla siebie. Życzę pożytecznej i krytycznej lektury. Dann steigt er in die eiskalte Emscher. Vor einem Jahr hatte der Bezirksbürgermeister von Dortmund-Aplerbeck darauf gewettet, dass die Bauarbeiten zur Renaturierung des Flusslaufs nicht wie geplant abgeschlossen würden. Doch jetzt ist alles schon vier Wochen früher fertig. Mader muss sein Versprechen einlösen. Neben ihm posieren Oberbürgermeister Ullrich Sierau im Wasser und Jochen Stemplewski, Vorstandsvorsitzender der Emschergenossenschaft, Deutschlands größten Abwasserentsorgers. Beide tragen Gummistiefel. Ein paar Fotografen lassen ihre Kameras klicken. Bis 2020 soll aus der größten Kloake Europas, einer 80 Kilometer langen Abwasserrinne, wieder ein Fluss werden – die »blaue Emscher«. 4,4 Milliarden Euro kostet das.
