  • I'm an African, Never Was an African-American": the Romanticization of Africa in American Hip Hop I'm a African, Never W
    K. Jeffery Leon 1 “I'm an African, Never was an African-American": The Romanticization of Africa in American Hip Hop I'm a African, never was an African-American Blacker than black I take it back to my origin … No I wasn't born in Ghana, but Africa is my momma And I did not end up here from bad karma – dead prez, “I’m A African” “The idea behind Black August is to facilitate the international cultural exchange between youth across the globe while supporting and promoting social consciousness and positive self- expression. What we got were a bunch of Yanks jerking off on the tits of Mother Africa.” – Niren Tolsi1 South Africa, August 2001. Against the backdrop of the United Nations’ World Conference Against Racism summit, several prominent hip-hop artists arrived in South Africa ready to perform a series of shows known as the Black August tour. The tour, hosted by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, was intended to bring awareness of Black political prisoners to audiences worldwide, as well as foster a cultural exchange of ideas and music. On the roster to perform were artists such as dead prez, Talib Kweli, Common, and Black Thought (emcee of The Roots), and they were primed to bring a fantastic show to South Africa. However, the tour imploded. The American rappers were seen by audiences as insulting and patronizing, “dispensing vague pieties about loving the motherland, and stamping across the stage to lecture the crowd about racism and reparations in the United States” (Chang 449). South African critics had a field day, as evident by the opening quote from Niren Tolsi.

  • From Black Slaves to Black Star
Jake Chaplin Page 1 of 66 From Black Slaves to Black Star: Towards a Liberating Theology in the Music of Mos Def and Talib Kweli by Jake Chaplin Religion Thesis Advisor: Terrence Johnson April 16th, 2012 Jake Chaplin Page 2 of 66 Jake Chaplin Page 3 of 66 Table of Contents Abstract……………………………………........ 5 Introduction......................................................7 Chapter One……………………………………..13 Chapter Two…………………………………….22 Chapter Three…………………………………...29 Chapter Four……………………………………37 Conclusion……………………………………….44 Appendix………………………………………...47 Bibliography…………………………………….64 Jake Chaplin Page 4 of 66 Jake Chaplin Page 5 of 66 Abstract This thesis project examines the ways in which hip-hop music engages in a theological remixing of the spirituals towards a means of liberation in 21st century America. To do so, it will look specifically at the lyrics of one particular group: Black Star. Through a lyrical analysis of selected Black Star songs, placed in direct dialogue with those of the slave spirituals, the work shows two distinctly different theological approaches to the discovery of a liberating space for blackness in America. Specifically, this thesis project investigates how hip-hop has carved a theology to meet the changing needs of blacks in America today. The work has much larger implications as it applies to race relations in America. Hip-hop – specifically the music of Black Star – empowers blacks to formulate a positive sense of self and engages in nation-building, through the metaphor of the ghetto. Black Star speaks to the work of James Baldwin and Toni Morrison in their interrogation of whiteness in America and the normative white gaze’s impact on blackness in the 21st century.

Thank you to the culture, through which, I have been able to experience a way of being and knowing that fulfills me and feels like my truth. I would like to thank Dr. Anthony Foy for helping me create and pivot around a plan to execute this project, for provoking my deeper thought and research, and for being my humble guide as I struggled with the tedious particularities of academic writing. I would like to thank Dr. James Padilioni for guiding and supporting me through my initial conception of this research during the summer of 2019—from providing an extensive list of source material for research to speaking with me for hours on end about Hip Hop and temporality and the ancestors. Ekweonu 2 Dedications I dedicate this thesis project to Hip Hop, to African-Americans, to Black people, to our Black ancestors and descendants—all without whom, I would not have found my way.

  • Anna Gadt Ależ Ja O Panu Nie Myślę Fot
MARZEC 2018 Miesięcznik internetowy poświęcony jazzowi i muzyce improwizowanej ISSN 2084-3143 Take 7 Siódme urodziny JazzPRESSu! TOP NOTE Kasia Pietrzko Trio Forthright Stories Rozmowy: Łukasz Stworzewicz Katarzyna i Tomasz Pierchałowie Dominik Strycharski Anna Gadt Ależ ja o panu nie myślę fot. My Favorite Things (or quite the opposite…)
