Roux Pretoria 2009 S T R E L I T Z I A This series has replaced Memoirs of the Botanical Survey of South Africa and Annals of the Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens which SANBI inherited from its predecessor organisations. The plant genus Strelitzia occurs naturally in the eastern parts of southern Africa. It comprises three arborescent species, known as wild bananas, and two acaulescent species, known as crane flowers or bird-of-paradise flowers. The logo of the South African National Biodiversity Institute is based on the striking inflorescence of Strelitzia reginae, a native of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal that has become a garden favourite worldwide. It sym- bolises the commitment of the Institute to champion the exploration, conservation, sustain- able use, appreciation and enjoyment of South Africa’s exceptionally rich biodiversity for all people. This has resulted in a book that is unique in its style and contents – carefully positioned between a scientific textbook and a guidebook for fire manage- ment practices, this volume will prove invaluable to fire management practitioners and decision-makers alike. The handbook also makes a significant contribution towards facilitating capacity building in fire manage- ment across the entire Sub-Sahara Africa region. -

The aim of the White Paper is to support the en- deavour of the United Nations and its af- Challenges for Concerted International Action filiated processes and networks, notably A White Paper directed to the United Nations the United Nations International Strat- egy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), and International Organizations the Hyogo Framework for Action 2005- 2015 “Building the Resilience of Nations and Communities to Disasters” and the Global Wildland Fire Network, to address global vegetation fires for the benefit of the global environment and humanity. The White Paper provides insight into the complexity of global vegetation fire issues and rationale for coordinated, in- ternational action in crossboundary fire management at global scale. This White Paper has been commis- sioned by the UNISDR Wildland Fire Ad- visory Group through its Secretariat, the Global Fire Monitoring Center (GFMC), Associate Institute of the United Nations University and Secretariat of the Global Wildland Fire Network. -

This list represents a combination of species recorded in Van der Merwe (1966), Werger, Kruger & Taylor (1972), McDonald (1983, 1985) and specimens collected from Swartboschkloof housed in the Government Herbarium, Stellenbosch (STE) and the Wicht Herba rium, Jonkershoek (JI ). The checklist is analysed and the flora of Swartboschkloof compared with the respective floras of Cape Hangklip and Cape Point (sensu Taylor 1985). Vlok* and C. de Ronde Saasveld Forestry Research Centre, Private Bag X6515, George, 6530 Republic of South Africa Accepted 2 August 1988 The effect of repeated burning on the understorey vegetation of a 28/29-year-old Pinus elliottii plantation on the Tsitsikamma plateau in the southern Cape was studied over a 3-year period. Annual surveys were done in each of the control, 2-year burning cycle and 4-year burning cycle treatments. With each survey sixty 1-m2 plots were layed out at random in each of the treatments. The species present and a subjective cover estimate of each species in the plot, were recorded. From this data the changes in frequency and average cover of the most abundant species in the treatments were analysed. Data were also lumped and analysed for species of similar growth form. Some statistically significant changes, due to the burning treatments, were recorded. After a single burn, grass cover increased significantly, while some shrubs/trees practically disappeared. The response of the herbs, restioids and ferns were less pronounced than those of the grass and tree/shrub growth forms. The first burn resulted in most of the changes and repeated burning had less impact on most of the species and growth forms. After several burns the understorey changed from a shrub/restioid community to a short even cover of a grass/restioid community. -
