County Council / Natural Resources Community Flood Plan for Newgale

INFORMATION

Newgale shingle bank protects to the 1 in 5 in any year flood level. Storm wave action can cause the bank to fail, blocking the A487 and flooding the two properties and one campsite at risk. The outfall of Brandy Brook sometimes blocks in storms and the impounded water can cause flooding. These events can normally be forecast up to 12 hours in advance. Other than reprofiling of the shingle bank, there is no flood defence scheme. Climate change is expected to cause rising sea levels and more frequent flooding events. The continued defence of the bank is expected to become unsustainable by 2035.
