Handbook-Alexmun-Uncct-1.Pdf Dear Magic community, we give you the warmest welcome to ALEXMUN 2021, the 10th edition of this Model UN, and to work on the representation of the Ministry of Magic and the Department Against Terrorism. Please keep in mind that this is a level 3 committee and that we will be debating a very delicate topic that affects the whole magic community, including muggles and institutions, so we expect all of you to have a diplomatic posture throughout the whole debate. At FANMUN we need the presence of experienced delegates who have the ability to maintain a fluid debate with the parameters that we establish, with the information available and with the support of their handbook. During these two days of debating, you will be discussing two topics, Death Eater attacks on the International Magic Community on the Quidditch Tournament and the attack on Diagon Alley by suspected Death Eaters in search of MudBloods/Half-Bloods. We expect to see a committed attitude and formal teamwork for the development of the topics, with the intention that you have the best experience, do not hesitate at any time to ask us anything from protocol information or on the timeline where we're going to go to spend our debate, remember that we want you to live a great academic experience and we are for you. As chair we promise to be there at all times supporting and guiding them for any questions that may arise, our main objective in this Model is to promote the development of their knowledge and their attitude as magicians when it comes to solving the problems of our magical community and promoting the well-being of the citizens of the world, regardless of their race or condition, which will help them in their training as a magician, student, instructor and friend in debate. We will like to thank you for being here at the Ministry of Magic: Department Against Terrorism. We hope the best to all of you and to see you soon! Ignorantia Juris Non Excusat Sincerely, Academic Chair of The Ministry of Magic: Department Against Terrorism CONTACT INFORMATION: President: Victoria Penilla Angeles E-Mail: [email protected] Phone Number: 4623178313 Moderator: Ricardo Uriel Solis Almanza E-Mail: [email protected] Phone Number: 4622337225 Conference Officer: Alberto Gonzalez Romero E-Mail: [email protected] Phone Number: 4621949598 COMMITTEE INFORMATION: BACKGROUND: The Ministry of Magic was created in 1707 to supervise the magic community in Great Britain Great Britain. The Ministry is based in Whitehall, London in England. However, this ministry has an affiliation with the International Confederation of Magicians which is an equivalent to the United Nations. The Ministry is responsible for regulating aspects such as education, jurisprudence and economics. Previously the Ministry had action in the adoption of sanctions against states suspected of being linked to certain terrorist acts. Years later, with the return of Voldemort along with several major incidents involving groups of criminal magicians, prisoners of Azkaban and even Death Eaters with the purpose of affecting the magical community. Therefore, the minister of magic gave the order to open a new department against terrorist attacks to regulate and take care of the direct attacks against the magical community. CURRENT STATUS: After the mishap that occurred during the Triwizard Tournament, where different schools participated in the Howards facilities. Different people declared that they saw The Dark Lord, along with some Death Eaters. However, the actions taken by the Ministry were questioned, since this organization flatly denies the appearance of He-who-should-not-be-named or the presence of his former followers, though there is an ongoing investigation regarding the death of one of Hogwarts students Cedric Diggory. FUNCTIONS: The Ministry of Magic is the main governing body of the magical community of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland and Wales and Ireland), with the intention of preserving magical law. The Ministry connects the British government to the wizarding world. The Ministry of Magic was formed as a successor to the earlier Wizards' Council and came into being in 1707. FACULTIES: In the case of the departments against terrorist attacks, they can only be as support and as a means of recommendations from the magic security department and the other areas responsible for problems within the ministry. In turn, it is known that the Ministry of Magic can only take measures around internal problems in the region, if they speak of international levels that are related to the International Confederation of Magicians, that would mean a greater participation where the ministry cannot intervene. ACHIEVEMENTS: Amongst the main achievements of the Ministry of Magic: Department Against Terrorism, we have: ● Maintaining peace in the magical community for many years since 1707 ● Maintaining the Identity of the magical world hidden from muggles; ● Prevented Terrorist attacks against the magical and muggle world safeguarding the safety of the inhabitants of both worlds; ● Using measures to maintain peaceful relations with ministries all over the world; ● Maintain channels of investigation and secure communication for the prevention and rapid action of the camera to neutralize and convate terrorist groups that threaten magical security. TOPIC A: VIOLENT ATTACK BY DEATH EATERS AND TERRORIST GROUPS AT THE RECENTLY REOPENED TRIWIZARD CUP OPENING I. BACKGROUND: The Ministry of Magic was created in 1707 to supervise the magic community in Great Britain Great Britain. The Ministry of Magic is the main governing body of the magical community of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales and Ireland), with the intention of preservation of magical law. The Ministry connects the British government to the wizarding world. The Ministry of Magic was formed as a successor to the earlier Wizards' Council and came into being in 1707.The laws against magic-use by underage wizards and against wand use by non-wizard folk are also enforced by the Ministry, in part to maintain secrecy. In the case of the departments against terrorist attacks, they can only be as support and as a means of recommendations from the magic security department and other areas responsible for problems within the ministry. In turn, it is known that the Ministry of magic can only take measures around internal problems in the region, if they speak of international levels, that have to do with the International Confederation of Magicians, that would mean a greater participation where the Ministry cannot intervene. II. ACTUAL PROBLEM: After the accident that occurred during the Triwizard Tournament, where different schools participated in the Hogwarts Headquarters, different people declared that they were observing The Dark Lord along with some Death Eaters, however, the actions taken by the Ministry were questioned because this organization flatly denies the appearance of Lord Voldemort or the presence of his former followers, although he has followed an investigation into the death of one of his students, Cedric Diggory.1 As the ministry flatly denies the appearance of Lord Voldemort, the ministry together with the International Magic Community decided, on behalf of the other council members, that the Triwizard Tournaments would be restarted, resuming the Tournament's activities and challenges. Which was opened by a Quidditch Tournament between the houses of Gryffindor and Slytherin. In which the three most important magic schools were spectators: the Beauxbatons Academy, the Durmstrang Institute and the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, along with respective Magic Advisers and some members of the Ministry, aurors and certain journalists. Near the end of the Quidditch match, the students were put at risk in view of a sudden attack from the stands to participants and spectators; who alerted the aurors, teachers, and members of the ministry to the sudden attack at the time. They wanted to act, they observed two forceful explosions, possibly by bombs of some kind of magic device and consecutive attacks by Death Eaters. They took the appropriate measures to evacuate the students and spectators, as well as trying to rescue the participants of the game, which suffered serious injuries and having one fatality death, the other Quidditch players were injured in addition to the attackers escaping. The Aurors and Investigators, as well as the guardians of each Hogwarts house, quickly began an investigation after the evacuation, in which they interviewed several guest teachers and magicians from the guest schools. The case remains unfinished, but so far three deaths have been reported, including the death of a Slytherin House Quidditch Player, an Auror in the midst of a wand duel, and a student from the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. To this point there has been a total of 282 wounded, from which counting 16 members of the Hogwarts School. The Anti-Terror Chamber of the Magic Ministry is preparing the necessary investigations and corresponding procedures together with the International Confederation of Magicians. There is an international risk in which the other magic schools of Beauxbatons and Durmstrang Institute want to take measures in view of the death of one of the student Beauxbatons and also, the multiple injuries of 1 Harry Potter Wiki.

  • A Critical Examination of Teachers in Harry Potter by Einar Christopher
The Magic of Hogwarts: A Critical Examination of Teachers in Harry Potter by Einar Christopher Wong B.A., Simon Fraser University, 2008. A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FUFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACTULY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Children’s Literature) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2014 © Einar Christopher Wong 2014 ii Abstract While there have been many young-adult and children’s novels and stories published that deal with school and teachers, there have been comparatively few studies done that analyze the messages these novels contain about formal classroom education, specifically about teacher characters. As well, the subject of school has been a relatively consistent theme for Hollywood movies and media geared towards teenagers and children, but, like their novel counterparts, analysis has been relatively light. J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series places itself in a very unique position in popular culture as the highest-selling book series and highest-grossing film series of all time; a series that mainly focuses on an education system, albeit for wizards and witches rather than muggles. Nonetheless, this thesis proposes to examine the professors at Hogwarts and to show whether or not Rowling has created a series of complex teacher characters; characters that are usually not a source of complexity in young adult or children’s literature. Additionally, this thesis will also examine how these characters have been adapted from the page to the screen and whether or not the movie versions of these teacher characters have retained any complexity found in Rowling’s novels.

  • An Exploration of JK Rowling's Social and Political Agenda in the Harry
Vollmer UW-L Journal of Undergraduate Research X (2007) Harry’s World: An Exploration of J.K. Rowling’s Social and Political Agenda in the Harry Potter Series Erin Vollmer Faculty Sponsor: Richard Gappa, Department of English ABSTRACT Over the years, the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling has grown in popularity, becoming one of the most read and most criticized pieces of children’s literature to date. Interestingly, the series has not only gained popularity with children, but also their adult counterparts. As a result of its adult success, Harry Potter has attracted more and more scholars to pursue serious literary analysis, most frequently exploring themes such as death and religion. However, the focus of this research is on the intertextual parallels of the numerous hierarchical structures found in the Harry Potter series, examining how these hierarchies develop the social and racial themes in the story and vice versa. A further purpose is to determine if there is a correlation between the power structures found in the series and our own, drawing on secondary criticisms and theory for support. Above all, although the series should not be reduced to “this versus that,” there is sufficient evidence to argue that a conflict of materialistic versus altruistic values is at work in the Harry Potter series. Therefore, the examination of race, hierarchy, and power assists in the recognition of the social and political systems at work in the series. Keywords: J.K. Rowling, Hierarchy, Materialism INTRODUCTION When a skinny boy with black hair, green eyes, and a telltale scar appeared on the scene in 1997, nobody could have predicted the significant impact this seemingly insignificant boy would have on the world.

Their main goal was the preservation of law regarding magic. Furthermore, the Ministry of Magic keeps Muggles from finding out about the culture of magical folk. Essentially, the Ministry is a complicated and highly inefficient bureaucracy. Their headquarters are in London and are made up of various Departments. Boards, Committees, and Offices, all of whom enforce the regulations and rules of laws. The Ministry tackles different aspects such as commerce, transportation, magical creatures, sport, and international relations. Within the ministry, there are numerous law enforcement agencies. Their roles are to maintain order, impose laws and rules, manage security breaches, and operate Azkaban (prison for magical criminals). Besides this, the Ministry also maintains groups of Hit-police who protect the wizarding world and deal with criminals. The Wizengamot, High Wizard Court, is a governing body that serves as the ultimate judge of justice for the wizarding world. The ministry unites the British government to the world of witchcraft. Every prime minister of Britain is visited by the Minister for Magic.

  • A Fiction-Based Religion Within the Harry Potter Fandom
Religions 2014, 5, 219–267; doi:10.3390/rel5010219 OPEN ACCESS religions ISSN 2077-1444 www.mdpi.com/journal/religions Article ‘Snapewives’ and ‘Snapeism’: A Fiction-Based Religion within the Harry Potter Fandom Zoe Alderton Independent scholar; E-Mail: [email protected] Received: 18 December 2013; in revised form: 6 February 2014 / Accepted: 11 February 2014 / Published: 3 March 2014 Abstract: The book and film franchise of Harry Potter has inspired a monumental fandom community with a veracious output of fanfiction and general musings on the text and the vivid universe contained therein. A significant portion of these texts deal with Professor Severus Snape, the stern Potions Master with ambiguous ethics and loyalties. This paper explores a small community of Snape fans who have gone beyond a narrative retelling of the character as constrained by the work of Joanne Katherine Rowling. The ‘Snapewives’ or ‘Snapists’ are women who channel Snape, are engaged in romantic relationships with him, and see him as a vital guide for their daily lives. In this context, Snape is viewed as more than a mere fictional creation. He is seen as a being that extends beyond the Harry Potter texts with Rowling perceived as a flawed interpreter of his supra-textual essence. While a Snape religion may be seen as the extreme end of the Harry Potter fandom, I argue that religions of this nature are not uncommon, unreasonable, or unprecedented. Popular films are a mechanism for communal bonding, individual identity building, and often contain their own metaphysical discourses. Here, I plan to outline the manner in which these elements resolve within extreme Snape fandom so as to propose a nuanced model for the analysis of fandom-inspired religion without the use of unwarranted veracity claims.

  • The Names in Harry Potter 1
The Names in Harry Potter 1 J.K. Rowling (cover TIME magazine) This article was published in Perspectives: Studies in Translatology 12. 56-72 (2004) J.K. Rowling (source: TIME magazine) THE NAMES IN HARRY POTTER Katrine Brøndsted and Cay Dollerup, Copenhagen, Denmark Abstract This article discusses the translation of some of the names in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books into five languages. It is argued that these names are found in different dimensions, viz. (a) a British one where the author addresses a British audience, (b) the translator’s perception and interpretation of this British universe, and (c) one in which readers respond to the realisations of the names in the target culture. The names are loosely divided into four cat- egories. The first concerns the main characters, for which there is virtually only direct transfer, and the second concerns English student names that present few problems. The third comprises characters connected with the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and the last group comprises names of other characters, including some descriptive names. The article notes that translators were obliged to use the names of the main characters from the British original in order to promote the sale of merchandise. It is concluded (a) that the main characters’ ‘Britishness’ is realised only as British names without any overtones in translation, (b) that even with different target languages, it is possible to document that each translator has used individualised and highly different approaches to the translation of the names, and (c) that the author’s exploitation of adult Britons’ knowledge of English literature and Latin probably elicits a different response from that of readers of translations, whereas the main narrative linearities (e.g.

  • From Orphan to Family Man
Laura Mortiers 1 Ghent University Faculty of Arts and Philosophy From Orphan to Family Man Family, Gender and Choice in Harry Potter Supervisor: Paper submitted in partial Prof. Dr. Gert Buelens fulfilment of the requirements for the degree “Master in de Taal- en Letterkunde: Frans-Engels” by Laura Mortiers May 2014 Laura Mortiers 2 The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other's life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof. (Bach, “Family”) Laura Mortiers 3 Preface Growing up with Rowling's work, Hogwarts became in many ways a second home to me. Reading the Harry Potter novels meant – and still means – a return to a world that is magical and mysterious, one that offers me a moment away from everyday life. At Hogwarts, I meet old friends, who have changed and grown up, as I have. Indeed, having now reread the whole series while writing this paper, I have noticed that, though with each perusal new ideas strike me and characters have developed even more, that magical world is still that very same, well-known and, above all, comforting place it has always been to me. This reading pleasure and comfort, I think, is the essence of what childhood reading should be all about. Whatever may be the lessons a reader draws from the work at hand, it is important that, before any other considerations come into play, a novel has a lasting effect on its reader. Whether talking about straightforward morality, more abstract life wisdom or the work's direct reflections on life, a reader should always cherish that pure joy of opening a book, reading it, and being under its spell from page one, right through to the end.
