Finalmente a todas as comunidades indígenas de São Paulo, que continuam a luta iniciada pelos povos Tupi de Piratininga, esperando que um dia esta história possa ser contada por eles e de outra maneira. 4 RESUMO Este trabalho tem como objetivo mostrar como os Tupi de Piratininga se posicionaram na segunda metade do século XVI frente ao projeto colonial português. Possui duas grandes unidades. A primeira, com os capítulos 1, 2 e 3, onde serão apresentados os protagonistas deste embate: o povo Tupi, o colono e o missionário jesuíta. Dos Tupi serão apresentadas algumas de suas características sócio-culturais, como a chefia, a religião e a mobilidade, com sua rede de caminhos entre as aldeias e as diversas regiões do interior com as quais tinha contato. Do colono, formado na sua maioria por degredados e aventureiros, será apresentado brevemente o projeto comercial, implantado no litoral vicentino, e que era baseado na cultura da cana de açúcar e na escravidão indígena. Por sua vez o pequeno número de povoadores que viviam isolados em São Paulo de Piratininga propiciou a formação de uma sociedade mestiça, que se dedicará, a partir do final do século XVI, ao tráfico de indígenas Do jesuíta será apresentado seu projeto missionário, trazido da Europa no espírito da reforma tridentina. A segunda unidade, capítulos 4 e 5, onde serão apresentadas as respostas indígenas frente a estes agentes da colônia: a acolhida, a adesão ao projeto missionário e colonial, e a resistência, na suas duas formas, a dissimulada e a guerreira. Quanto à adesão ao projeto missionário serão apresentados os dois primeiros aldeamentos reais, o de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Pinheiros e o de São Miguel de Ururay, e a ligação destes indígenas que se tornaram cristãos com a vida colonial. Quanto à resistência, será mostrada a importância das lideranças religiosas Tupi nos levantes guerreiros, sobretudo na guerra de Piratininga, e a resistência dos Tupi autônomos, que pressionaram belicamente a vila de São Paulo até o final do século XVI . E finalmente a participação de um importante seguimento Tupi no projeto colonial paulista, que resultou no bandeirismo escravista. Em anexo s erão apresentadas as traduções, ainda inéditas, dos mitos Tupinambá, recolhidos por Thevet, no século XVI; o texto da primeira demarcação de terra indígena no planalto paulista; e o primeiro levantamento populacional do Brasil, feito pelo jesuíta Pe. Luís da Fonseca, por volta de 1592. Palavras chaves: Tupi - São Paulo – jesuíta - resistência indígena. 5 ABSTRACT The objective of this study is to show the position of the Tupi of Piratininga on the Portuguese colonization project in the second half of the sixteenth century. It is constituted by two large units. The first one (chapters 1, 2 and 3), where the protagonists of this conflict will be presented: the Tupi people, the colonists and the Jesuit missionaries. Some sociocultural characteristics of the Tupi will be presented, such as the leadership, the religion and the mobility, with their net of paths between the villages and the several areas of the countryside with which they had contact. The commercial project of the colonists, who were mainly expatriates and adventurers, will be discussed briefly. The project was implemented in the coast of Sao Vicente, and was based on sugarcane culture and Indian slavery. On the other hand, the small number of settlers who lived isolated in Sao Paulo de Piratininga favoured the formation of a mixed-race society, which will, from the end of the sixteenth century on, engage in Indian traffic. The missionary project of the Jesuits, brought from Europe in the spirit of the Tridentine reform, will also be described. The second unit (chapters 4 and 5), where the indigenous response to these colony agents will be presented: the welcome, the compliance with the missionary and colonial project, and the two types of resistance, veiled and bellicose. With regard to the compliance with the missionary project, the first two royal villages, “Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Pinheiros” and “Sao Miguel de Ururay” will be described, as well as the connection between these Indians who became Christians and the colonial life. As for the resistance, the importance of the religious Tupi leaderships during the insurrections will be shown, especially in the Piratininga War, and the resistance of the autonomous Tupi, who pressured bellicosely the village of Sao Paulo until the end of the sixteenth century . Finally, the participation of an important Tupi segment in the colonial project in Sao Paulo, which resulted in the pro-slavery expeditions will be discussed. Attached, the translations, previously unpublished, of the Tupinambá myths collected by Thevet in the sixteenth century will be presented: the text of the first indigenous land demarcation in the plateau of Sao Paulo, and the first populational survey in Brazil, conducted by the Jesuit Father Luis da Fonseca around 1592. Uniterms: Tupi Indian - São Paulo – jesuit - indigenous resistance. 6 RESUMÉ Ce travail a pour objetif montrer comme les Tupi de Piratininga se sont positionnés dans la seconde moitié du XVI siecle en face au projet colonial portugais. Il y a deux parties : la première, avec les chapitres 1, 2, 3, où seront presentés les protagonistes de ce confront : les indiens Tupi, le colon et le misionaire jésuite. Des Tupi seront presentés quelques caracteristiques socio-culturelles, comme le rôle du chef, la religion, et la mobilité, avec le reseau de chemins. entre ses villages et les diverses régions de l´interier avec lesquelles ils avait des contacts. Du colon , formé en majorité par les déportés et aventuriers, ce sera presenté brievement son projet comercial , implanté sur la côte dans la région de São Vicente, qui sera basé dans la culture de la cane-à- sucre et dans l´esclavage des indiens. D’autre part, le petit nombre d´habitants que vivaient isolés à São Pablo de Piratininga a permis la formation d´une societé métise, que va se spécilisé dans le trafique d`indiens a partir du final du XVIème siécle. Des jésuites sera presenté son projet missionaire, qui au même temps será un auxiliaire de la conquête portuguaise. A la deuxième partie, avec les chapitres 4 e 5, seront presentés les reponsés que les indiens ont donné aux agents de la colonie : l´accueil, l´adhesion au projet missionaire et colonial, et la resistence, dans ses deux formes, la desimulée et la guérrière. Quant à l´adhesion au missionaire seront presentés les deux premiers villages royaux ( Aldeias do Padroado Real ), celui de Notre Dame de La Concépcion de Pinheiros et celui de San Miguel de Ururay, et le rapport de ces indiens devenues chretiens avec la vie coloniale. Quant à la resistence, il sera montrée l´importance des liders religieux Tupi dans les revoltes guerrières, surtout dans la guerre de Piratininga (1562), et la resistence des Tupi autonomes, qui iront pressionnés le village de SãoPaulo jusqu’à la fin du XVI ème siècle. Finalement la participation d´un groupe Tupi dans le projet colonial paulista, qui a aidé l’établissement du « bandeirismo», c’est è dire, le trafic d’esclaves indiens. En complement, ils seront presentés : la traduction inédites des mythes Tupinambá, recueilliés par Thevet, au XVI ème siécle; le texte de la premiére démarcation de la terre des indiens du plateau paulista ; et le premier tableau de la population brésiliènne, faite par le jesuite Pe. Luiz de Fonseca, autour de 1592. The sporadic character of these encounters make the impact on Amerindian contacts on societies irregular and uneven. My analysis is directed to the present condition as encountered, especially the the Amazon variety of contacts. This approach obliges the text be treated as a whole, rather than being read selectively. Maintaining the integrity of the text allows us to see 1500-1562 the different kinds of relations in their contexts. My intention is to use these reports to search for the brid- ges across cultural separations. Each drew the other Mark Harris[1] towards them, in their own ways.     Portuguese and Spanish Overseas Expansion, 1450-1600 The rise of the New Monarchies led directly to European overseas expansion. The first phase (1450-1600) was dominated by Portugal and Spain. For various reasons, England and France lagged behind. It wasn’t until after 1600 that they, along with the Dutch, also established overseas trade routes and colonies. In this reading we will focus on the Portuguese and Spanish. The first question we must ask is why, after remaining on their own continent throughout the 1000-year-long medieval period (except, perhaps, for the Crusades to the Holy Land) did Europeans begin sailing to Africa, the Americas, and Asia in the 15th century? The answer lies in the desire of the New Monarchies to gain greater wealth and power. Motives for Overseas Exploration The Economic Motive The primary motive for overseas exploration was for the New Monarchies to increase their power by acquiring new sources of wealth. Having centralized their governments at the expense of the feudal nobility and Church, the New Monarchies sought other ways besides internal taxation to increase the wealth and power of their states. As we saw in the previous reading, France and Spain sought to dominate the divided Italian states – much to the dismay of Machiavelli. Besides war, marriage was also used to increase state power. Spain’s influence in Europe grew enormously with the succession of Ferdinand and Isabella’s grandson, Charles Habsburg to the throne of Spain as Charles V. Ruling both Spain and the Holy Roman Empire, the Habsburg dynasty was Europe’s most powerful.

I also seek to point out how Updike sets forth the complicated racial issues in modern-day Brazil through the hardships his two main characters, Tristão and Isabel, undergo. In a way, Updike seeks to identify parallel selves in individuals of other nations; individuals whom one would typically categorize as “Others”. The paper also discusses how Updike attempts to de-emphasize racial differences and suggests that humans are all connected to one another as mixed combinations of color. I argue that in a society where racial identities are not clearly definable and where miscegenation is commonplace, interracial unions are more easily accepted. Updike, however, sees that behind this admixture there is a bias linked to skin color and social class. Meanwhile, I argue that Updike’s text is stronger in his sense of place than his sense of people.

Herrera 2019 Abstract Cranial morphology has been widely used to estimate phylogenetic relationships among and between populations. When compared against genetic data, however, discrepancies arise in terms of population affinity and effects of microevolutionary processes. These discrepancies are particularly apparent in studies of the human dispersion to the New World. Despite the apparent discrepancies, research has thus far been limited in scope when analyzing the relationship between the cranial morphology and genetic markers. This dissertation aimed to fill this void in research by providing a necessary broad comparative approach, incorporating 3D morphological and climate data, mtDNA, and Y-chromosome DNA from South America. The combination of these data types allows for a more complete comparative analysis of microevolutionary processes. Correlations between these different data types allow for the assessment their relatedness, while quantitatively testing microevolutionary models permit determining the congruence of these different data types. I asked the following research questions: 1) how consistent are the patterns of population affinity when comparing different regions of the crania to each type of DNA for populations in South America? 2) If they are not consistent, why not? How are different evolutionary forces affecting the affinities between them? Collectively, both the cranial and genetic data demonstrated patterns of isolation-by-distance when viewed from a continent-wide scale.

Most of the time, however, they simply call them “stories” or, more precisely, tomowkap, which literally means “something that orients”, tales about an event that may have happened at anytime in the recent past or even in the present. This article is an attempt to explore the epistemological and ontological implications of this indiscernibility between myths and other kinds of narrative. The assumption here is that this may tell us something about the way the Aweti think, not only in what concerns the nature of what we call myth, but also about the nature of knowledge one can have about the world and, furthermore, about the nature of the world itself. In Brazil there is a serious problem of homicide and traffic accident mortality, which affects mainly the poorest areas. However, in the Brazilian literature on demography and health, violent mortality in indigenous communities and the effects of colonization on health outcomes have been little explored. Objective: This paper seeks to fill this gap by examining mortality from external causes in the Pataxó community of Bahia, Brazil, from a postcolonial demographic perspective. Methodology: Firstly, a systematic review of the Brazilian literature on the mortality of indigenous peoples was carried out. We then construct a theoretical approach to violence that focuses on colonialism as a social determinant. From the data of SIM (2006-2014) a quantitative mortality analysis was estimated by standardization, and the main causes of violent death were identified. Finally, a qualitative analysis was proposed from the CIMI reports (2007 to 2015) to explain the violent mortality among the Pataxó people. Findings: The results show a high pattern of juvenile and adult mortality among the Pataxó people. External causes were responsible for 16.8% of the total deaths in this indigenous population, affecting mainly men (89.5% of deaths) and people aged 15 to 44 years (76.3% ), and the main causes were homicide and road traffic injuries.
