Approve commendation for the Stanislaus County Swiss Club Upon their 100th Anniversary. CONTACT PERSON: Elizabeth King, Clerk of the Board Phone: 209-525-4494 ATTACHMENT(S): 1. Commendation COMMENDING THE 100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE STANISLAUS COUNTY SWISS CLUB WHEREAS, between 1820 and 1930, 290,000 Swiss immigrated to the United States and about 30,000 came to California. Today, nearly one million people of Swiss ancestry live in the U.S. and 120,000 of them reside in California; and, WHEREAS, perhaps the most famous Swiss immigrant is John Sutter, whose sawmill in Coloma is where gold was first discovered in 1849. It was brought to Sutter’s Fort at New Helvetia (New Switzerland) to be weighed and validated, igniting the Gold Rush. Since 1850, we have called New Helvetia, Sacramento, our State’s capital city; and, WHEREAS, in September 1920, Swiss immigrants Martin Bianchi, brothers Antonio and Abondio Yori, and other Swiss families established the Stanislaus County Swiss Club to plan and organize meetings and activities to preserve Swiss culture and traditions and to provide camaraderie for both Swiss Germans and Swiss Italians living in the area. It was the first Swiss Club in the San Joaquin Valley. In 1926, the Swiss Germans formed a separate organization and located in nearby Ripon. By that time there were 20,000 Swiss Americans living in California; and, WHEREAS, from the outset, the Yori family property on Taylor Road in Ceres served as a gathering place for Swiss immigrants with the proviso that the club have an annual meeting with a minimum of 20 members and that an annual Swiss picnic be held to commemorate the independence of Switzerland in 1291. In 1949, the Yori family deeded the property, fondly known as Yori’s Grove due to its many eucalyptus trees, to the Swiss Club; and, WHEREAS, in the years since, the Swiss Club has faithfully held true to its promise and the annual picnic has drawn hundreds of Swiss Italian and Swiss German immigrants and their American-born descendants to Yori’s Grove from all over California; and, WHEREAS, the two Yori brothers married the two daughters of Martin Bianchi, and their children continued their families’ devotion to ensuring the longevity and prosperity of the Swiss Club; and, WHEREAS, today, many descendants of the original families are members of the Club and carry on the vision of their grandparents and great-grandparents embodied in the famous Swiss motto, “One for All, All for One”. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisor does hereby commend and congratulate the Stanislaus County Swiss Club on its 100th Anniversary. .
