AMISOM Police Commissioner welcomes 1 Ghana Formed Police Unit

The Acting AMISOM Police Commissioner, DCP Rex Dundun welcomed the Ghana Formed Police Unit advance party on September 29, 2019 into AMISOM police family in Mogadishu, Somalia.

The outgoing Peace Support Operations Division Police coordinator at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, DCP Adeoye Adereim, on 22 September 2019 bid farewell to the AMISOM Police component’s senior leadership team and Individual Police Officers in Mogadishu, Somalia.

DCP Dundun informed the officers that the coordinator had been on ground in Addis Ababa for the past four and a half years ensuring that policing had a voice within the African continent.

“The reason why I am here is for the love I have for AMISOM Police component, each IPO, and FPU both present and absent,” said DCP Adereim.

3 AMISOM Police inducts newly deployed 3 officers On 30 August, 19 newly deployed Individual Police Officers (IPOs) from Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Uganda and Zambia, concluded a weeklong mandatory induction training.

While addressing the police officers, the Acting AMISOM Police Commissioner, DCP Rex Dundun reminded them that AMISOM has zero-tolerance to sexual exploitation and abuse.

He urged the deployed officers to safeguard the achievements that AMISOM has registered over the years and maintain discipline, which is a bedrock for all uniformed personnel.

AMISOM Police, Federal Government, 4 partners discuss the Somali Police- Darwish concept

Officials from AMISOM Police, the Federal Government of Somalia, agencies, and the EU Capacity Building Mission (EUCAP) on September 04, met to discuss the Somali Police-Darwish concept. The meeting took place at the AMISOM Police headquarters in Mogadishu.

The Darwish are traditionally recognised security providers in Somalia and consequently integrated in the security setup under the National Security Architecture that was endorsed in 2017, as well as in Somalia’s new policing model. The AMISOM Police senior leadership on 10 September paid a courtesy call on the newly appointed Somali Police Force (SPF) Commissioner, Gen. Abdi Hassan Mohamed.

Gen. Abdi Hassan received the AMISOM leadership team in his office located at the SPF Headquarters in Mogadishu. In his remarks, the Somali Police Commissioner hailed AMISOM Police component for the support rendered to the Somali Police Force over the years.

The Acting AMISOM Police Commissioner, DCP Rex Dundun congratulated his Somali counterpart upon his recent appointment as police commissioner and pledged AMISOM Police’s readiness to continue working with the Somali Police Force.

AMISOM Police deploys reform advisors at 6 Somali Police Force

On 01 August, the AMISOM Police component deployed a new team of senior reform advisors to work jointly with the Somali Police Force (SPF).

The AMISOM Police Coordinator Reforms, Restructuring and Development, ACP Maxwell Chikunguru, officially introduced the police advisors to the SPF leadership during a visit to the SPF headquarters in Mogadishu. The Somali Police Deputy Director of Planning and Training. Gen. Mohamed Mohamoud Garaan, introduced the advisors to the various directorates and departments at the Somali Police Force headquarters.

AMISOM police advisors are senior police officers possessing wide ranging expertise. The advisors collocate on a daily basis at the SPF headquarters to mentor their Somali police counterparts.

AMISOM Police conducts mobility planning 7 course

The AMISOM Police Induction and Rotation Team in conjunction with the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), on September 10 concluded a four-day mobility planning course for 20 Nigerian and Ugandan FPU officers.

Mr. Matrika Runwor, the lead trainer explained that participants were taken through a number of modules such as IED components, IED indicators, operating in vulnerable environments, threat mitigation, deployment to enable officers to detect IEDs. Speaking during the training held atthe Joint Mission Training Centre (JMTC) in Mogadishu, the Acting AMISOM Police Commissioner, DCP Rex Dundun expressed appreciation of the in-mission trainings that are offered.

9 Field Technology Section demonstrates drones to AMISOM Police, Military

The Field Technology Section (FTS) of UNSOS on August 20 conducted a demonstration on how to operate and use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in peacekeeping operations.

The exercise which took place at the AMISOM Force headquarters, was witnessed by AMISOM officials from the police and military components.

Unmanned aerial vehicle also referred to as drones, are aircrafts that are remotely controlled and are used in intelligence gathering, surveillance and reconnaissance.

AMISOM Police hosts Mogadishu security plan implementation 10 meeting

AMISOM Police in conjunction with the Federal Government of Somalia, UNSOM, and UNOPS hosted a high-level meeting on August 20 to discuss the implementation of the Mogadishu Security Plan work request.

Key issues of the work request included an asset management system, police deployment, sustainability plan, and development of a concept note regarding the integration of Darwish militia in line with the National Security Architecture.

Speaking at the meeting held at the AMISOM Police headquarters, Acting AMISOM Police Commissioner, DCP Rex Dundun said a technical committee would be constituted to train and align the Darwish militia as forces with clear-cut tasks.

11 AMISOM Police, UNMAS conclude vehicle checkpoint training

On 04 September, AMISOM Police and UNMAS concluded a vehicle checkpoint course for 20 Nigerian Formed Police Unit officers.

The five-day course that took place at the Joint Mission Training Centre, aimed to equip the FPU officers with skills to enable them to mitigate terrorist threats at checkpoints. 3 AMISOM FPU personnel provide professional support to the Somali Police Force in conducting joint patrols in Mogadishu city and the Federal Member States. The personnel maintain law and order, train their Somali counterparts, contribute to public order management, participate in cordon and search operations, conduct patrols and perform escort duties for VIPs among other tasks.

On 10 September, the African Union Peace Support Operations Division (AU PSOD) expressed satisfaction about progress made so far by AMISOM to transfer security responsibilities to Somali Security Forces, in line with the Somali Transition Plan.

The delegation from the African Union Commission was on a two-day visit to assess the operations of AMISOM and evaluate progress made in the implementation of the transition plan.

Maj. Gen. Francis Okello, the Chief of the Plans and Operations Unit in the AU PSOD led the delegation which also consisted of officials from the UN Office to the African Union. SRCC Madeira visits AMISOM personnel admitted in Nairobi hospitals

On 26 September, the Head of AMISOM, Ambassador Francisco Madeira, accompanied by other AMISOM officials visited injured AMISOM personnel admitted at various medical facilities in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi.

Ambassador Madeira expressed satisfaction at the quality of treatment extended to the injured soldiers and thanked the medical staff for the excellent care to the troops.

He was accompanied by AMISOM Force Commander, Lt. Gen. Tigabu Yilma; Lt. Gen. Osman Noor Soubagleh, who is Ambassador Madeira’s Special Advisor on Military Affairs and the Acting AMISOM Police Commissioner, Rex Dundun.

Ambassador Madeira said that his visit was to show solidarity with the peacekeepers, thank them for their sacrifices and reaffirm the commitment of the mission leadership to the injured soldiers as they recuperate in hospital.
