Somali Police officers get management and leadership training

AMISOM held a management and leadership skills training for 30 Somali Police Force (SPF) officers in to enable them to perform their duties effectively.

The weeklong training held at the Gen. Kahiye Police Academy in Mogadishu, concluded on 14 December and was attended by junior and senior SPF officers.

The training covered topics in management, leadership, decision making, problem-solving, communication, time management, team building, change management, duties and responsibilities of commanders.

AMISOM Police Commissioner Kailie commences duty

During the month of November, the AMISOM Police Commissioner, AIGP Augustine Magnus Kailie arrived to commence work.

AIGP Kailie, a seasoned police officer from Sierra Leone, replaced Brig. Gen. Anand Pillay from South Africa, who left in November 2017.

With over 30 years of professional experience in the Sierra Leonean Police Force, AIGP Kailie has served in various capacities. Prior to his appointment, he was the Head of the Operations Support Division (OSD), in the armed wing of the Sierra Leone Police Force.

He leads the AMISOM police component which has a mandate to train, mentor, and advise the Somali Police Force (SPF) and support stabilisation efforts under the Somalia Transition Plan.

AMISOM is implementing the transition plan, under which the mission will gradually hand over security responsibilities to Somali security forces and exit by 2021.

The Head of AMISOM, Ambassador Francisco Madeira met with AIGP Kailie and congratulated him on his appointment.

“We have to help rebuild the police institution in Somalia and ensure the delivery of quality services to the public,” said Ambassador Madeira.Ambassador Madeira paid tribute to the Sierra Leone Police contingent under AMISOM, for the excellence and professionalism in implementing the AMISOM mandate.

AIGP Kailie noted that his appointment was an opportunity to reciprocate the support the international community provided Sierra Leone following the civil war from 1991 to 2002.

“I am happy to pay back the support Sierra Leone received from various international organisations following the civil war. Their contributions were significant to our peace process,” he said.

Somalia Police Chief meets head of AMISOM to discuss security of upcoming elections

With elections drawing near, the Somali Police Commissioner, Gen. Abdi Hassan Mohamed, in mid-November met with Ambassador Francisco Madeira, the Head of AMISOM, to discuss ways and strategies to secure the upcoming polls.

At a meeting held in Mogadishu and attended by senior AMISOM and SPF personnel, Gen. Abdi gave an update on the newly formed Election Security Task Force and how AMISOM could support the taskforce by providing security for both the parliamentary and presidential elections, expected to be held in 2020/2021.

Uganda police officers complete tour of duty amid glowing praise from AMISOM

At the beginning of December, 17 police officers from Uganda completed their one-year tour of duty, where they served under the AMISOM police component.

AMISOM Police Commissioner Augustine Magnus Kailie on Sunday presided over the medal parade in Mogadishu, and paid tribute to the officers for their dedication, professionalism and contribution to achieving AMISOM’s mandate.

“I want to congratulate you for your good work during the last 12 months. We appreciate your contribution towards the implementation of AMISOM Police mandate,” Commissioner Kailie said.

“You have acquired knowledge and wealth. You must use them wisely. I would like to advise you all to employ your time in improving your life and the lives of others around you. I implore you that when you go back home, you should not be the same as you came. You should observe human rights. As a peacekeeper, you have been mentoring the Somali Police. So, when you go back home, tell them you are a different person, with international experience, and that you observe human rights,” he advised.
