Archives in France: The New Legislation of 1979 The main features of the organization of archives in France go back to the end of the eighteenth century. When, from 1789 to 1793, the revolutionary govern- ment suppressed virtually all the existing political, administrative, judicial and ecclesiastical systems of the ancient monarch, it became necessary to make ar- rangements for the archives of all the suppressed bodies and establishments. As early as 29 July 1789-in the very first weeks of the Revolution, fourteen days after Bastille Day, the newly-created Assernblee nationale organised its own records under the title of "Archives nationales". Soon, papers of differ- ent provenance were gathered with the papers of the Assemblee nationale. Little by little, the repository created in July 1789 became a haven for enor- mous quantities of records deprived of their legitimate owners by the revolu- tionary laws, to an extent that a law of 7 Messidor Year I1 (25 June 1794) de- clared that "the Archives nationales are the central repository for the whole Republic". ' This, of course, was unrealistic in practice, but the theory was established for centralization in the organization of archives, and after that it was never officially repealed. Yet, while the Archives nationales functioned as a "central repository" for the records in Paris, nothing had been done for the records in the dkpartements (the new word for "provinces"). This was the object of the law of 5 Brumaire Year V (26 October 1796) which concentrated the records, in each departement, in the chef-lieu (capital) of the dkpartement: later, these were named Archives de'partementales. -

Paris is one of the top global cities for tourists, offering many cultural pursuits for visitors. One of Paris’s main growth factors is new luxury hotel openings or re-openings and visitors from new developing countries, which are fuelling the luxury sector. This is shown by certain significant openings and department stores moving up-market. Other recent movements have accentuated the shift upmarket of areas in the Right Bank around Rue Saint-Honoré (40% of openings in 2018), rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, and Place Vendôme after the reopening of Louis Vuitton’s flagship in 2017. The Golden Triangle is back on the luxury market with some recent and upcoming openings on the Champs-Elysées and Avenue Montaigne. The accessible-luxury market segment is reaching maturity, and the largest French proponents have expanded abroad to find new growth markets. Other retailers such as Claudie Pierlot and The Kooples have grown opportunistically by consolidating their positions in Paris. Sustained demand from international retailers also reflects the current size of leading mass-market retailers including Primark, Uniqlo, Zara brands or H&M. In the food and beverage sector, a few high-end specialised retailers have enlivened markets in Paris, since Lafayette Gourmet has reopened on boulevard Haussmann, La Grande Épicerie in rue de Passy replacing Franck & Fils department store, and more recently the new concept Eataly in Le Marais. -

CHAPTER 15 The Politics of Location Alternative Media and the Search for Queer Space he experience of living queer has typically been located at the crossroads of embodiment and disembodiment. We are defined by our corporeal selves, Tour sexual desires and affectional preferences. As David Bell and Jon Binnie write, “[E]roticism is the basis of [our] community” (87). We tell each other to come out because we wish to be visible as queer; we wish to embody a real iden - tity. Simultaneously, we are disembodied by our cultures. We are ordered to disap - pear, to inhabit a closet where we can’t be seen by the straights, the young, and the innocent. We are to ld not to “speak its name,” not to “flaunt it.” Our experience of culture—our sexual citizenship, as it were—is fraught with this uncomfort - able double consciousness. We often engage in commerce, in the arts, in politi - cal activism, precisely to find a visible viable place in our culture, a place where our embodied identities need not feel the erasure of a closeting hegemony. Jeffrey Weeks argues that the sexual citizen “makes a claim to transcend the lim - its of the personal sphere by going public, but the going public is, in a necessary but nevertheless paradoxical move, about protecting the possibilities of private life and private choice.” This way of doing citizenship, Weeks goes on to say, is the only way that “difference can [ever] find a proper home” (37). Let us think about the concept of “home” as it relates to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgen - der (LGBT) people. -

The project addressed a twofold challenge for the architect: to make the best use of the emblematic urban context of the Marais, and to renew the luxury brand. Franklin Azzi is anything but a beginner, since fashion designers such as Christophe Lemaire, Isabel Marant, Jérôme Dreyfuss, Bali Barret, and Lacoste have already entrusted him with the conception of their stores. But here, the way he revisits the use of noble materials to meet the high standards of fashion luxury, differs from earlier projects. 5 FRANKLIN AZZI FACADE DESIGN A hair salon previously occupied the premises. The existing facade design was far too absent. Franklin Azzi clads it with a black-lacquered wood mantle piece which is inspired in large part by neo-Victorian molding fashions: an idea both in accordance with Galliano’s identity, and in agreement with the requests of ABF (Architectes des Bâtiments de France) authorities. The wooden joints, edges and corners of the facade elements are decorated with moldings. Brass-inlay signs generously adorn the upper frieze and lower window-frames, while the fabric blinds are elegantly embroidered with the brand’s signature. -

CoAD in Paris 2021 PRE-DEPARTURE PLANNING PACKING One of the most frequent comments that we hear from students after they come home is “I wish I hadn’t packed so much”! When traveling abroad it is important to remember that packing light will make your trip easier. You should not bring anything that you cannot carry by yourself at one time. Remember that you have to carry your bags through the airport, through customs, into the city, and then on to your housing. This will be a much easier process if you can carry your luggage comfortably. Also remember that anything you forget can be bought in France, so focus on bringing the basics. Leave your valuables behind and only pack clothes you will be comfortable in daily.
