TORT LIABILITY OF LABOR UNIONS FOR PICKET LINE ASSAULTS In the tense and volatile atmosphere that accompanies labor disputes, no situation is more likely to produce violence than the picket line. The confrontation of antagonistic parties at the picket line enhances the possibility of personal assaults. Although as saults by pickets will usually be unfair labor practices,1 the Na tional Labor Relations Act (NLRA) 2 does not provide a mechanism for fully compensating the victims of such assaults. 3 In addition, those who commit picket line assaults will often be judgment-proof. 4 Thus, in order to secure adequate compensation for their injuries, the victims of picket line assaults must be able to attach tort liability to labor unions. -

City of Ambition: Franklin Roosevelt, Fiorello La Guardia, and the Making of New Deal New York Mason Williams Submitted in partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Mason Williams All Rights Reserved Abstract City of Ambition: Franklin Roosevelt, Fiorello La Guardia, and the Making of New Deal New York Mason Williams This dissertation offers a new account of New York City’s politics and government in the 1930s and 1940s. Focusing on the development of the functions and capacities of the municipal state, it examines three sets of interrelated political changes: the triumph of “municipal reform” over the institutions and practices of the Tammany Hall political machine and its outer-borough counterparts; the incorporation of hundreds of thousands of new voters into the electorate and into urban political life more broadly; and the development of an ambitious and capacious public sector—what Joshua Freeman has recently described as a “social democratic polity.” It places these developments within the context of the national New Deal, showing how national officials, responding to the limitations of the American central state, utilized the planning and operational capacities of local governments to meet their own imperatives; and how national initiatives fed back into subnational politics, redrawing the bounds of what was possible in local government as well as altering the strength and orientation of local political organizations. The dissertation thus seeks not only to provide a more robust account of this crucial passage in the political history of America’s largest city, but also to shed new light on the history of the national New Deal—in particular, its relation to the urban social reform movements of the Progressive Era, the long-term effects of short-lived programs such as work relief and price control, and the roles of federalism and localism in New Deal statecraft. -

"The New Deal of War" By Torbjlarn SirevAg University of Oslo Half a year beforeJapanese pilots bombed the United States into World War 11, in a June 1941 edition of Coronet magazine, a little known author added his voice to that of other critics of the policies of Franklin D. Roosevelt. There were basically only two New Deals, John Pritchard here retorted to those who were debating the many twists and turns of the administration's policies. As he saw it, there had been a visionary and planning-oriented first stage-a "New Deal I" -from 1933 to the Nazi push into Holland in May 1940. Roughly at that time, however, the first stage had given way to a far more hardnosed phase which he labeled "New Deal I1- the New Deal of War." If Pritchard's phrase was new, the notion behind it was not. But his was and remains the most poignant expression of an attitude that for all its impact has never been fully understood. How can it be that even if a clear majority of the American people favored all steps short of war in the months immediately before Pearl Harbor the President hesitated to take the lead ?And how can it be explaineed that Washington remained in a state of political turmoil during most of the military emergency when other nations at this crucial moment set aside politics in a show of real national unity? In both situations, the corrosive influence of the "New Deal of War" idea remains crucial. In retrospect, this idea served the function as a bridge uniting the peacetime and wartime opposition against Roosevelt. -

THE PHILIP TAFT COLLECTION Papers, 1955-1972 (Predominantly, 1960-62, 1972) 2 linear feet Accession Number 495 L. C. Number MS The Philip Taft papers were donated by Theresa Taft, and placed in the Archives between 1971 and 1979. They were opened to researchers in January, 1985. Dr. Philip Taft was born in 1902, in Syracuse, New York. At the age of 14 he left New York and spent the next eight years working at odd jobs in factories, Great Lakes ore boats, the Midwest grain harvest, Northwest logging camps and the railroad. It was during this period, in 1917, that he joined the Industrial Workers of the World. He later worked with the IWW Organization Committee, an executive group for the agricultural workers. He returned to New York and finished High School at the age of 26. He was then accepted at the University of Wisconsin, where he worked with Selig Perlman, a prominent labor historian. He co-authored The History of Labor in the U.S. 1896-1932 with Dr. Perlman while still a graduate student, and went on to write numerous books on economics and labor history. Among these was an in-depth, two volume history of the American Federation of Labor. He received his doctorate in economics in 1935 and subsequently worked for the Wisconsin Industrial Commission, the Resettlement Administration and the Social Security Administration. In 1937, he joined the economics department faculty at Brown University and served as department chairman from 1949-1953. Dr. Taft was on of the founding editors of the Labor History journal in 1959, and served on the editorial board until 1976. -

Going Karura Colliding subjectivities and labour struggle in Nairobi’s gig economy Gianluca Iazzolino Firoz Lalji Centre for Africa, Department of International Development, LSE Centre of Socio-legal Studies, University of Oxford [email protected] [email protected] Accepted: 23-Jun-2021 Abstract Based on an ethnography of Uber drivers in Nairobi, my article explores practices of contestation of the gig economy taking place both in the digital and physical space of the city. It argues that the labour struggle against the price policies and the control mechanisms of ride-hailing platforms like Uber foreground the tension between a subjectification from above, in which the platforms construct the drivers as independent contractors, and the shaping of subjectivities through the interaction of the drivers with the digital platforms and with one another. It also suggests that, through contestation, as the one catalysed by the call to ‘go Karura’, logging-off from the app, the workers connect their struggle to a broader critique of processes of exploitation, dependency and subalternity involving the state and international capital. While contributing to the growing literature on the gig economy in low and middle-income countries, my article brings the labour geography scholarship exploring how workers collectively shape economic spaces in conversation with the intellectual tradition of Italian Operaismo (Workerism). In doing so, it highlights the nexus of labour subjectivity and collective agency as mutually constitutive. It was established on 1 November 2006, bringing together the organisations which were formerly affiliated to the ICFTU and WCL (both now dissolved) as well as a number of national trade union centres which had no international affiliation at the time. The new Confederation has 340 affiliated organisations in 163 countries and territories on all five continents, with a membership of 181 million, 40 per cent of whom are women. It is also a partner in “Global Unions” together with the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD and the Global Union Federations (GUFs) which link together national unions from a particular trade or industry at international level. The ITUC has specialised offices in a number of countries around the world, and has General Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
