Science fiction deals with things that might possibly happen (or, in the case of the subgenre of science fiction known as alternate history, things that possibly could have happened); fantasy deals with things that never could happen. There is always a path from our here-and-now to the milieu of a science-fiction story: usually that path simply involves time passing and plausible advances in science and changes in society taking place during that time. There is never a path from our here-and-now to the milieu of a fantasy story: no matter how much you might want to get to the fantasy world, you can't, because magic and supernatural powers do not work in our universe -- you can't get there from here. Succinctly: there's discontinuity between our reality and fantasy; there's continuity between our reality and science fiction. ------ROBERT J. SAWYER, Science Fiction Writer

Sci-fi film/series 1. Red Dwarf (Cult series with a typical English humor. Thanks to Lister I use curry powder in cooking. Kryten's knowledge of rules always set me laughing. Ace Rimmer's catchphrase "Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast!" is unforgettable.) 2. Contact 3. I, Robot 4. Alien 5. Star Trek Sci-fi book 1. Contact (I like to be thinking about life in space. This book has made me to think about the future. The book is little different to movie. The machine transported five passengers. They traveled across the galaxy and actually encountered extraterrestrial beings, but they couldn't prove it. In my opinion it is an interesting idea of the author.) 2. Duna 3. 2001: A Space Odyssey 4. Return from the Stars (S. Lem) 5. The Day of the Triffids

Fantasy film/series 1. Raiders of the Lost Ark (One of the best movies in history. Maybe for some people it is more an adventure movie than fantasy. There is a mix of everything in the film - specific humor, thrill, action, exaggeration... The scene where Indy shot a sabre warrior is immortal.) 2. Clash of the Titans 3. The Neverending Story 4. Ghostbusters 5. The Lord of the Rings

Fantasy book 1. The Lord of the Rings (Tolkien) 2. Harry Pottrer (Rowling) 3. Zaklínač (Sapkowski) 4. Discworld (Pratchett) 5. Riftwar Saga (Feist) I am sorry, but I have not read any of typical fantasy books yet. I have tried several times to read such books but I couldn't. And I have no power to do it now. I do not like this sort of books, because it is a too big impact on my logical brain:) So I like no fantasy book. Sorting of books is based on some Internet discussions of fantasy fans.

It is several years since I read a sci-fi book and watched the same movie. So I cannot remember all details. From books I have read and movies I have seen I remember especially Contact. As the first of them I have seen the movie a then I have read the book. This is probably the reason why I prefer the movie to the book. The movie is science fiction drama and very good adaptation of the classic book by Carl Sagan. Reading the book I was under the influence of the movie so I couldn't involve all my imagination. At the beginning of the movie I was fascinated by graphical representation of the universe and by interesting shots of the field of radio telescopes later in the movie. And a leading role of Dr. Ellie Arroway was played by my favorite actress Jodie Foster. The biggest difference which I have remembered is that in book the machine transported five passengers while in the movie just one. The movie did not avoid some Hollywood moments (taking heart stage), it may be too long for somebody (2.5 hours). But I watched it with thrill to the end. Úkol č. 4
