Introduction
Introduction 1 Iciar Bollaín (left) rehearsing Mataharis Iciar Bollaín (Madrid, 1967), actress, scriptwriter, director and producer, is one of the most striking figures currently working in the Spanish cinema, and the first Spanish woman filmmaker to make the Oscars shortlist (2010). She has performed in key films directed by, among others, Víctor Erice, José Luis Borau, Felipe Vega and Ken Loach. Starting out as assistant director and coscriptwriter, she has Santaolalla_Bollain.indd 1 04/04/2012 15:38 2 The cinema of Iciar Bollaín gone on to make four short films and five feature films to date, all but one scripted or coscripted by her. She is also one of the founding members of Producciones La Iguana S. L., a film production company in existence since 1991. Her work raises questions about authorship, female agency and the mediation in film of social issues. It also highlights the tensions between creative and industrial priori ties in the cinema, and national and transnational allegiances, while prompting reflection on the contemporary relevance of cinéma engagé. Bollaín’s contribution to Spanish cinema has been acknowledged both by filmgoers and the industry. Te doy mis ojos (Take My Eyes, 2003) is one of a handful of Spanish films seen by over one million spectators, and was the first film made by a woman ever to receive a Best Film Goya Award (Spanish Goyaequivalent) from the Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España (Spanish Film Academy).1 Recognition has also come through her election to the Executive Committee of the College of Directors and Scriptwriters of the SGAE (Sociedad General de Autores y Editores) in July 2007, and to the VicePresidency of the Spanish Film Academy in June 2009.2 The varied range of Bollaín’s contribution to Spanish cinema, and the extent to which she is directly involved in key roles associated with filmmaking, inevitably lead to speculation on the extent to which she may be regarded as an auteur. -

THEATER (ROCKEFELLER PLAZA) Puntual a la ata, un año más, el "Festival de Cine Español" se presenta en Nueva York, como una embajada de la cinematografía de nuestro país. Este año hemos ampliado hasta catorce el número de películas que se proyectarán. Catorce títulos de un año de producción, sobre un total de sesenta, constituyen, en mi opinión, una muestra muy representativa de la temporada cinematográfíca española 198&87. Una temporada que me atrevo a calificar de esperanzadora en el difícil pero interesante y personal camino que el cine español está recorriendo desde la instauración de la libertad creadora1. Un camino que no ha sido fácil de recorrer, y en el que nuestro cine ha emprendido la dura tarea de reencontrarse a sí mismo, abiertamente, decididamente, después de tantos años de ambigüedad, de falsas y tortuosas fórmulas. Pocas artes como la cinematografía son capaces de reflejar en forma tan puntual la idiosincrasia de un país, su problemática sociopolítica, su cultura. Yo espero que esta películas que hoy ofrecemos puedan acercarles a la imagen de una nación que intenta mostrar al mundo su capacidad creadora, sus valores artísticos, que, enraizados en el pasado, pretenden integrarse, con personalidad propia, en el conjunto universal de búsqueda de nuevas formas. Once again our call for short film submissions triggered a lot of interest. Artists and designers, filmmakers as well as scientists sent us their ideas, visions and thoughts about synthetic biology and its societal ramifications as audio-visual content. While watching the100 film entries from 17 countries and four continents, our jury of nine was confronted with a spectacular diversity. It became quite clear that our award categories for “Fiction”, “Animation” and “Documentary” were by far not precise enough to label this wealth of reflections in an adequate manner. From mockumentary to pre-product placement, from affirmation to gamification, from gastronomic speciesism to economic autophagy, “ or from naïve de-extinction to planned bio-obsolescence, the final selection of 60 films in BIO·FICTION 2014 will remain a unique resource in providing narratives for possible futures. First of all, his actual life. The life of a young man who consciously chooses the option of fighting for freedom, accepting down to the very last consequences the tragic and disproportionate price he is going to have to pay for his acts, and whom, for that reason, history is going to convert into the symbol of a generation. His youthfulness, his attractive and charismatic personality, romantic and at the same time voluptuous, the richness and variety surrounding his relations with his family and his sentimental relations, the vibrant action of his exploits with his companions in the MIL and, of course, the tremendous drama of his last hours up to his execution, would be sufficient examples for creating a film of great intensity. One has to add, moreover, the value of being based on real events rigorously documented which took place in a recent period of Spain’s history, the end of the Franco regime, which is relatively virgin territory from the cinematographic point of view. This permits us to recover a sociological setting that appeals to a broad spectrum collective memory among the public, both those who lived through those times and the young public who can find elements of identification with the character, whom they will see as a rebel with a cause, eager for and loving a better life than the one that has been handed out to him, fighting with all his strength forces against injustice, mediocrity and conformism.
