Moeller SENIOR REPORTER RUTHERFORD — Leslie O'Keefe, longtime super- intendent of schools in Rutherford, will retire July n minutes 1. The administrator gave her three-month notice to the Board of Education Thursday, April 1. The news came in the wake of Rutherford's budget crunching, which will result in several layoffs and pro- gram cuts throughout the district. O'Keefe, who has served as superintendent for 10 years, was vocal during the Board's March 31 budget presentation that the circumstances involving Rutherford and its loss of state aid are devastating. "It gives me an enormous amount of pain" to stand here and say these things, O'Keefe said to assembled board members and parents. The cuts are "beginning the disman- tling of an outstanding school district." But, current events are not the reason O'Keefe is choos- ing to end her career. FIRST CENTURY AVANT-GARDE FILM RUTH NOVACZEK a Thesis
NEW VERNACULARS AND FEMININE ECRITURE; TWENTY- FIRST CENTURY AVANT-GARDE FILM RUTH NOVACZEK A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Westminster for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2015 Acknowledgements Thanks to Chris Kraus, Eileen Myles and Rachel Garfield for boosting my morale in times of great uncertainty. To my supervisors Michael Mazière and Rosie Thomas for rigorous critique and sound advice. To Jelena Stojkovic, Alisa Lebow and Basak Ertur for camaraderie and encouragement. To my father Alfred for support. To Lucy Harris and Sophie Mayer for excellent editorial consultancy. To Anya Lewin, Gillian Wylde, Cathy Gelbin, Mark Pringle and Helen Pritchard who helped a lot one way or another. And to all the filmmakers, writers, artists and poets who make this work what it is. Abstract New Vernaculars and Feminine Ecriture; Twenty First Century Avant-Garde Film. Ruth Novaczek This practice-based research project explores the parameters of – and aims to construct – a new film language for a feminine écriture within a twenty first century avant-garde practice. My two films, Radio and The New World, together with my contextualising thesis, ask how new vernaculars might construct subjectivity in the contemporary moment. Both films draw on classical and independent cinema to revisit the remix in a feminist context. Using appropriated and live-action footage the five short films that comprise Radio are collaged and subjective, representing an imagined world of short, chaptered ‘songs’ inside a radio set. The New World also uses both live-action and found footage to inscribe a feminist transnational world, in which the narrative is continuous and its trajectory bridges, rather than juxtaposes, the stories it tells. -

Listening In On Belfast Punk Linsey McFadden Photo Courtesy of Sing Sing Records n the late 1970’s punk rock struck a city divided by religion and politics. A city with an atmosphere permeating with the smell of hatred and fear, security checkpoints marred the entrance to the city centre, while bombings and shootings were commonplace. At Inight the only people that dared to walk the city’s streets were the one’s that enforced the curfews and the ones that broke them— punks. It wasn’t London and it wasn’t New York. They weren’t the only cities to carve out their stake in the punk rock world. Welcome to Belfast, a city where punk rock came at a time when it really made sense. In Northern Ireland, punk rock was never simply a fashion piece to be gawked at. Punk rock came to Belfast at a time of Troubles, a time when the city was more comparable to a warzone than a Western metropolis. It came at a time of blown out buildings, shootings, tense security, intimidation, curfews, and hate. “It was a scary place to be, in the city centre at night,” said Aidan Murtagh of Protex. “People stayed in their own areas where they felt safe. The only people about town at nights were British army, police and punks. These tensions probably added to the way the music was played and performed by many of the bands.” Until the relatively recent release of the Good Vibrations movie, Northern Irish punk had largely been pushed to the background as writers and filmmakers rushed to document the rise of punk in cities like New ork,Y London and L.A. -

Drömmen I Dåliga Bilder
Örebro Universitet Institutionen för humaniora, utbildning och samhällsvetenskap Drömmen i dåliga bilder En studie om estetiken i Beyond the Black Rainbow och Inland Empire Självständigt arbete 2019-01-17 Medie- och kommunikation, inriktning film Handledare: Jakob Nilsson Författare: Daniel Sandberg & Kim Jakobsson Abstract This thesis examines visionary directors David Lynch and Panos Cosmatos aesthetics in the films Inland Empire and Beyond the Black Rainbow. Two films with surrealistic aspects that are using a form of degraded aesthetics to achieve a certain kind of cinematography that is rarely seen in the industry. We examine what tools are being used to achieve the effect with theories concerning defamiliarization, the uncanny and uncanny valley. Aspects of cinematography in these films are working together to create effects that are both defamiliarized and uncanny.
