  • Kansai-Yamamoto Paper
Alexandria Lewis-Hawthorne Kansai Yamamoto is a Japanese designer, born on February 8, 1944 in Yokohama, Japan. Kansai studied both civil engineering and english at Nippon University. He then completed his studies at Bunka Fashion College and pursued a career in design. Kansai opened his own boutique in Tokyo in 1968. In 1971, he started his own company, Yamamoto Kansai Company Ltd, with his two partners ( Journal Runway Archive, 2018). Kansai set the foundation for Japanese fashion going mainstream in western fashion. Kansai was the first Japanese designer to move to Europe, a decade before Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto started showing their collections in Paris. He was at the forefront of contemporary Japanese fashion during the 1970s and 1980s. His saturated patterns and exaggerated silhouettes were influenced by the colorful art of the Momoyama period of Japanese art, 1573-1615 along with vibrant costumes of Kabuki theatre and classic manga illustrations, some of which could be seen in prints and mask motifs during Louis Vuitton’s 2018 Cruise Collection. Kansai is known for his avant-gardist designs which reference Japanese art and theatre. He is also credited with renewing interest in the traditional Kimono. David Bowie reached out to Kansai about making costumes for him after seeing one of his looks featured on the cover of Harper’s and Queen. Kansai was then commissioned by David Bowie to design the costumes for his Ziggy Stardust tour. He was the first designer to create a Bowie stage costume. The costumes consisted of widely cut and printed Kimono, extravagant silhouettes and suits made out of synthetic shiney materials.

L’Homme. Z. F. G. 26, 2 (2015) Forum The Female Body of Jewish Suffering: The Cinematic Recreation of the Holocaust in the Bulgarian-East German Co-Production “Zvezdi/Sterne” (1959) Nadège Ragaru Distancing itself from earlier studies, recent scholarship on the cinematic representa- tion of the Holocaust has demonstrated that the portrayal of anti-Jewish persecution has not remained taboo throughout the socialist era in Eastern Europe.1 A segment of this scholarly literature has explored the gendered dimensions of the filmic rendering of Jewish victimhood and agency in Eastern Europe. In a recent contribution, for instance, Anke Pinkert has investigated the changing depictions of Jewish manhood in GDR cinema with a view to “re-examin[ing] discourses of victimisation and perpetration”.2 Focusing on the interpretation of womanhood in film, the present arti- cle aims to contribute to the growing body of literature by tracing the inception, mak- ing, and reception of “Zvezdi/Sterne” (Stars), a Bulgarian-East German co-production directed by Konrad Wolf. The film, which was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Festival in 1959, tells the story of an impossible love between a German Unter- offizier and a Greek Jewish woman who was detained with other Jews from Bulgarian- occupied Western Thrace in a Bulgarian transit camp, pending deportation to Poland. 1 On the Soviet case cf. Jeremy Hicks, First Films of the Holocaust: Soviet Cinema and the Genocide of the Jews, 1938–1946, Pittsburgh 2012; on the GDR, in an abundant literature, cf. • And the Ship Sails On
And The Ship Sails On by Serge Toubiana at the occasion of the end of his term as Director-General of the Cinémathèque française. Within just a few days, I shall come to the end of my term as Director-General of the Cinémathèque française. As of February 1st, 2016, Frédéric Bonnaud will take up the reins and assume full responsibility for this great institution. We shall have spent a great deal of time in each other's company over the past month, with a view to inducting Frédéric into the way the place works. He has been able to learn the range of our activities, meet the teams and discover all our on-going projects. This friendly transition from one director-general to the next is designed to allow Frédéric to function at full-steam from day one. The handover will have been, both in reality and in the perception, a peaceful moment in the life of the Cinémathèque, perhaps the first easy handover in its long and sometimes turbulent history. That's the way we want it - we being Costa-Gavras, chairman of our board, and the regulatory authority, represented by Fleur Pellerin, Minister of Culture and Communication, and Frédérique Bredin, Chairperson of the CNC, France's National Centre for Cinema and Animation. The peaceful nature of this handover offers further proof that the Cinémathèque has entered into a period of maturity and is now sufficiently grounded and self-confident to start out on the next chapter without trepidation. But let me step back in time. Since moving into the Frank Gehry building at 51 rue de Bercy, at the behest of the Ministry of Culture, the Cinémathèque française has undergone a profound transformation.
