The OBA turns a 100 this year and on behalf of the management and staff, I offer my warmest congratulations. It is not every school that can boast such a long standing and illustrious alumni body, and we are justifiably thrilled.

A school is only as good as its alumni, for it is in them that we see the fruits of our labour. Not just in your achievements but also in the way you continue to uphold the best traditions of Jesuit education. You are ambassadors of the school, and it is through you that our Jesuit teachings spread out into the world. It is you Old Boys, who show that the lessons of hard work and discipline, combined with humanitarian goals that you learnt here, truly make you ‘men for others’

Your deep and abiding love for your alma matter, is indeed praiseworthy. We deeply appreciate the time and energy you invest in organizing various activities for staff and students, despite leading busy professional lives. You have not just the gratitude of our boys for your contribution to their overall growth, but you are also their role model.

The OBA is like a vast fount of unending assistance to teachers and students. The OBA buzz, scholarships to the needy students, OBA innovation lab, career day series, Josexcels sports awards, medical and accident insurance for the staff, midday meal scheme and host of other initiatives prove that our loyal and generous old boys are ever willing to give back. Our thanks go out to Mr. George Olapally, the President of the OBA and all the office bearers, who work tirelessly to stay in touch and in the present.

We are proud and grateful for our Alumni network; I pray for God’s choicest blessings and wish you all success in the years to come.

Fr. Clifford Sequeira, SJ Principal, SJBHS

9 THE OBA LEVERAGED TECHNOLOGY DURING THE YEAR 2017-18

Technology has increasingly encompassed our lives over the recent past. The outreach of the OBA had been limited to a fairly static web site (sjbhsoba.net) that had been developed to primarily provide information to the Josephite community. The information that was being provided spanned news about upcoming OBA events, recently held OBA events, OBA Calendar of events, photographs, obituaries, accomplishments of Old Boys, and news from school.

There was a significant change in the online presence and outreach of the OBA during the year 2017- 18. Keeping in mind that the charter of the OBA is to increase camaraderie among Jospehites and to ‘give back’ to our alma mater, the Managing Committee resolved to leverage technology in a number of ways.

Social media platforms have been used to increase awareness of OBA events conducted in Bangalore and at Chapters worldwide, such as those at North America, Middle East and Singapore. The younger Josephite community has been addressed through Facebook and Instagram. For example, the drawing of lots for the Football and Hockey tournaments were broadcast live on Facebook and Instagram, and so were the finals of the tournaments.

The ability of the OBA to ‘give back to our alma mater’ is significantly dependent on the state of the financial corpus. The OBA has been able to increase the corpus by conducting several reunions and fund raising drives. Reunions such as the OBA Golf Tournament have been driven by technology for both marketing and fund raising. The OBA successfully executed fund raising through donations towards exclusive Centenary memorabilia that included art works by Paul Fernandes, limited edition Myra beverages, limited edition Amrut beverages and limited edition Zippo lighting devices. All the above initiatives were driven and supported by a strong technology platform.

For the first time, the web site of the OBA presented a dynamic interface to collect donations for several causes towards Old Boys, students, and teachers. The MC wishes to acknowledge the contributions of the Information Technology sub-committee of the Managing Committee of the OBA that made this happen. The key members included Daniel Prabhu (2006), Lawrence Taur (2004), Vivek George (2004), Jaya Prabhu (1999), Vikram Chugh (1992), Francis Satish (1991) and Jyotinath Ganguly (1975).

The IT sub-committee intends to further ramp up online presence and transactional capabilities of the OBA web site during the year 2018-19.

42 SJBHS OBA SINGAPORE CHAPTER

SJBHS OBA Singapore Chapter (SOBAS) was long overdue. I am happy to inform that it has happened finally in the Centenary Year of OBA ! It started off as a small group in early 2018 and the group has since grown. We now have contacts of 23 Josephites from Singapore & the ASEAN Region who are in the group. This is encouraging and we are sure that we will have more as we go along. The primary objective is to get the Josephite fraternity in Singapore (and ASEAN Region) get connected/networked and meet on a regular basis for initiatives and activities. We had our first get together on the occasion of the Centenary of the OBA on 12th Aug 2018. The response for this event was good and we had 20 attendees (including spouses and children). Some snaps from the event are attached. SOBAS is gaining momentum steadily and there will be more OBA activities happening in Singapore in the days to come. Stay tuned !!
