A Search for Champion Boxers
Mathematical Assoc. of America Mathematics Magazine 88:1 August 5, 2021 10:06 p.m. output.tex page 1 VOL. 88, NO. 1, FEBRUARY 2015 1 A Search for Champion Boxers Tien Chih Montana State University-Billings Billings MT 59101 [email protected] Demitri Plessas Independent Researcher [email protected] “Once the fans of history get an idea of the people he beat, then they will get a better perspective of him, I’m sure. He’s got an All-Star list of victories. So they’re gonna think ‘. damn he beat all these guys?’ People are gonna know. He should be in the top 5, top 3 and stuff.” - Mike Tyson on Evander Holyfield (Chasing Tyson [3]) The 2015 documentary “Chasing Tyson” [3] describes the career of 4-time world heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield. One of the central themes of this film was how due to his low-key style and humble attitude, the boxing public did not accept Holyfield as a top fighter deserving of the accolade “world heavyweight champion”. However, former Heavyweight Champion and widely accepted all-time great Mike Tyson is quoted above at the end of the film, making the case for Holyfield’s greatness. Although not particularly flashy in or outside the ring, Holyfield’s achievement in the sport of boxing may be measured in an objective way: by the list of quality boxers he has defeated. This argument is reminiscent of Google’s PageRank algorithm [2, 10]. PageRank is an algorithm that assigns to web pages a value, based on the web pages who link to it and their value, that is receiving an incoming link from a high-value website carries more value than a link from a low-level one. -

ESPN Films' 30 for 30 to Premiere Tommy Morrison Documentary
ESPN Films’ 30 for 30 to Premiere Tommy Morrison Documentary Exclusively on the ESPN App and On-Demand ESPN Films will premiere a documentary on the ESPN App and on- demand for the first time with the next installment of the award-winning 30 for 30 series, “Tommy.” The film about the late WBO heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison will be available exclusively for streaming and on-demand audiences starting Wednesday, September 13. It will then make its broadcast premiere on Wednesday, September 27, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2. Co-directed by Gentry Kirby and Erin Leyden, “Tommy” examines Morrison’s remarkable rise to the spotlight, followed by a stunning, confounding, and ultimately tragic fall. He was one of the best heavyweights of his time; a handsome, charming, yet unsettled young star. Born into a troubled family in America’s heartland, Morrison’s initial emergence as a fighter was bolstered by a starring role in “Rocky V.” A few years later he beat George Foreman for the WBO heavyweight title, and seemed primed for more stardom, even in the face of blown opportunities and upset losses. But everything changed in early 1996 when he tested positive for HIV, abruptly forcing him into retirement at age 27. From there, Morrison’s life spiraled further and further downward, plagued by drug problems, jail time, and an eventual denial that he had the virus at all. “Although testing positive for HIV was a big part of Tommy’s life, we did not set out for this to be an HIV story,” said co-director Gentry Kirby. -

Analysis of Male Boxers' Nicknames
THE JOURNAL OF TEACHING ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC AND ACADEMIC PURPOSES Vol. 6, No 1, 2018, pp. 126 UDC: 81‟1/‟4:796 https://doi.org/10.22190/JTESAP1801001O ANALYSIS OF MALE BOXERS’ NICKNAMES Darija Omrčen1, Hrvoje Pečarić2 1University of Zagreb, Faculty of Kinesiology, Croatia E-Mail: [email protected] 2Primary school Andrija Palmović, Rasinja, Croatia E-Mail: [email protected] Abstract. Nicknaming of individual athletes and sports teams is a multifaceted phenomenon the analysis of which reveals numerous reasons for choosing a particular name or nickname. The practice of nicknaming has become so embedded in the concept of sport that it requires exceptional attention by those who create these labels. The goal of this research was to analyse the semantic structure of boxers’ nicknames, i.e. the possible principles of their formation. To realize the research aims 378 male boxers’ nicknames, predominantly in the English language, were collected. The nicknames were allocated to semantic categories according to the content area or areas they referred to. Counts and percentages were calculated for the nicknames in each subsample created with regard to the number of semantic categories used to create a boxer’s nickname and for the group of nicknames allocated to the miscellaneous group. Counts were calculated for all groups within each subsample. Key words: hero, association, figurative language, figures of speech 1. INTRODUCTION Are nicknames only arbitrary formations of little account or are they coinages contrived meticulously and with a lot of prowess? Skipper (1989, 103) alleges that nicknames “often serve as a miniature character sketch”. When discussing nicknames in baseball, Gmelch (2006, 129) elucidates that sobriquets frequently communicate something about the players using them, e.g. -
