Though now much forgotten, the Mediterranean has been a cauldron of Air Power experimentation, notching up a number of “firsts” in air warfare. It was the location for the first Strategic Bombing campaign (Capronis in 1915 v Austria). It provided the site where Air Power’s domination of ground forces was demonstrated for the first time (Wadi el Fara). It was the place where, again for the first time, and under wartime conditions, a battle fleet was destroyed from the air (Taranto). And it was the place where an entire country was saved from almost certain destruction, by the rapid resupply of war materiel by air (Yom Kippur) 1. 2. The good weather in the region has been an important factor in Air Power’s successes, helping Air Power to demonstrate its ability to yield both tactical and strategic results. Not only at Wadi el Fara, but during the North African Campaign in 1942/3, and at the Mitla Pass (1967), Air Power achieved psychological and physical effects that were truly decisive. 3. This paper, considering the history and importance of Air Power in the Eastern Mediterranean, will concentrate largely on Britain and the RAF’s operations in the region. This is not to minimise such events as the ’67 Arab Israeli War where Air Power destroyed the Egyptian Air Force on the first day, the Yom Kippur War mentioned above, or even the effectiveness of Operations PROVIDE COMFORT and NORTHERN WATCH, both mounted from Turkey, but simply to focus attention on Cyprus and its role in the Eastern Mediterranean.

    Flying Officer David Elwyn Walters Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 1940-46 Preface This is an attempt to tell as much as possible of the story of my father’s service in the Royal Air Force between 1940 when he enlisted and the date of his discharge after the Second World War in 1946; his journey through the ranks from enlisted man to commissioned officer and from “Blighty” to Africa, the Middle and Far East and back again. While it tries to tell of a more memorable time in his life, rather than the story of his whole life, it’s fair to say that the period of his service during the war and after was probably the most important part. Many of the details of everyday life are now forgotten, gone to the grave with those who lived through those momentous events but some of the tales are retold here, albeit with some minor unintentional changes, omissions or even additions; that all depends upon my own memory and how much of the stories my father chose to remember and some of the letters that were somehow saved. He was just an ordinary bloke from an ordinary background who found himself taking part in some of the most extraordinary times in history. He didn’t do anything to mark him out from the rest, just an ordinary bloke doing what had to be done as his part to end the madness of war and he survived. If I have to dedicate this small work to anyone then obviously it has to be first to my father and mother and then to the 125,000 other ordinary blokes, brave men every last one who answered the call and nightly flew against the Nazi evil as “The Bomber Boys”; the men of RAF Bomber Command and the 55,573 who failed to return.

Another group under Lt S. van Breda Theron received training on Hawker Hurricanes and Hawker Furies before leaving for Kenya in late May. It during this time they received two cheetah cubs 2 as mascots, and their name, the “Flying Cheetahs” was born. A last group left for Mombassa by boat, also late in May. Together, they formed the foundation of 2 Squadron. Corporal Jack Friedman designed the crest and on October 1 2 Squadron was officially born - although they had been operating independently of 1 Squadron for months. On the completion of the East African Campaign in April 1941 the squadron redeployed to the Middle East, with some elements doing so via Durban. During the campaign 2 Squadron claimed 8 Italian aircraft confirmed shot down. Only one aircraft was shot down and only two pilots were taken prisoner of war after both made emergency landings. I am also indebted to my typist. I set out to write about aviation and flying training and my wife undertook the typing. In setting the scene, Mrs. Garden got included. My wife liked that. Mrs. Garden brought others in her train and so, changed the whole nature of the thing. Aviation today, is propelled forward, not so much by its history and the hard won lessons of the past, as by modern technology and it the first to benefit by the fallout from space exploration. It remains, however, a long hard pull for its participants and, while we still rely on airflow over the wings to stay airborne, many of its basic truths will remain.
