Dramatic views of Lake Como Poet Percy Shelley described Villa Pliniana in a letter to a friend.. in 1818: "This lake exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty [...] But the finest scenery is that of the Villa Pliniana so called from a fountain which ebbs and flows every three hours, described by the younger Pliny, which is in the courtyard. [...] The scene from the colonnade is the most extraordinary, at once and the most lovely that eye ever beheld. On one side is the mountain, and immediately over you are clusters of cypress-trees of an astonishing height, which seem to pierce the sky. Above you from among the clouds, as it were descends a waterfall of immense size, broken by the woody rocks into a thousand channels to the lake. On the other side is seen the blue extent of the lake and the mountains speckled with sails and spires [...]" «This lake exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty but the finest scenery is that of the VillaPliniana» Percy ByssheShelley Villa Pliniana is the grandest and oldest villa in Lake Como, but it is so much more than that: • Interiors by Patricia Urquiola • Service by il Sereno (voted best hotel in Italy, Conde Nast Traveller 2019) • Catering by Berton al Lago (Michelin Star) • 18 Acres, no neighbors, absolute privacy • Two water falls on property, plus the legendary Villa Pliniana source. • Member of Virtuoso and Leading Hotels of the World The Villa Pliniana Villa Pliniana by Sereno Hotels is a stunning 16th century Italian Palazzo set on 18 waterfront acres on the legendary Lake Como. This pretensión can rarely be advanced in favour of familiar letters, written in haste for the information or entertain ment of private friends. Such letters are frequently among the most delightful of literary compositions, but the stamp of absolute literary perfe&ion is rarely impressed upon them. The exceptions to this rule, in English literature at least, occur principally in the epistolary litera ture of the eighteenth century. Pope and Gray, artificial in their poetry, were not less artificial in genius to Cowper and Gray ; but would their un- their correspondence ; but while in the former premeditated utterances, from a literary point of department of composition they strove to display view, compare with the artifice of their prede their art, in the latter their no less successful cessors?

  • Percy Bysshe Shelley
PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY 1792 August 4, Saturday: Percy Bysshe Shelley was born at Field Place, Warnham, near Horsham, West Sussex, the eldest child of Elizabeth Pilfold Shelley and a Member of Parliament for New Shoreham, Sir Timothy Shelley,1 and the eldest grandchild of a man with extensive holdings in land, (Percy) Bysshe Shelley. This firstborn son of privilege would be educated at Eton and Oxford University and it would be presumed during his growth years that when he would reach the age of maturity, 21, he would inherit his father’s seat in Parliament. As a stripling he would be taken to the House of Commons and would meet Sir Francis Burdett, the Radical M.P. for Westminster. At Eton he would develop a consuming distaste for tyranny, and in the midst of all this adolescent rebelliousness would be greatly influenced by Burdett — in 1810 he would dedicate one of his earliest poems to him. While at Oxford, Shelley would be consuming the thoughts of radical political writers such as Tom Paine and William Godwin. He would author articles in defense of Daniel Isaac Eaton, a bookseller who was being condemned because he offered for sale works by Tom Paine and Richard Carlile. 1. Sir Timothy Shelley had sat for a seat under the control of the Duke of Norfolk, and always endorsed his patron’s policies of electoral reform and Catholic Emancipation. HDT WHAT? INDEX PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY 1797 June: A treaty with the Bey of Tripoli that had been negotiated by the administration of President George Washington was finally signed and ratified by the federal senate at this point during the administration of President John Adams.

  • Lake Expectations: the Five-Star Hotel Causing Ripples in Como
https://www.ft.com/content/440581f8-849d-11e6-a29c-6e7d9515ad15 28 Sept 2016 Lake expectations: the five-star hotel causing ripples in Como Patricia Urquiola’s creation is piquing the interest of design aficionados and longstanding Como visitors View of Lake Como from a suite in Il Sereno © Patricia Parinejad September 28, 2016 On a hazy September afternoon on Lake Como, there is an unusual amount of speedboat activity. Unusual even for Como — the speedboat’s spiritual home. Every couple of minutes, a wooden Riva boat swooshes by with a bronzed shirtless skipper at the helm and, more often than not, a couple of bikini-clad friends lounging behind on deck. As they approach the calm jade waters in front of Il Sereno, the motor dies slightly, giving the crew a few seconds to peer through their Ray-Bans at the guests sunbathing around the hotel’s lakeside infinity pool. Some snap photos on their phones, before revving up and nonchalantly zooming out of sight. The unveiling of Il Sereno, a sparkling new five-star hotel, at the end of August has caused ripples of excitement across Como. Not only is it the first contemporary design hotel to be built on the lake, but its opening night took the form of a very exclusive wedding party: the nuptials of Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek and partner Sofia Levander. Security was upped significantly for the weekend-long affair, not least to protect Ek’s entourage, which included best man Mark Zuckerberg, master of ceremonies Chris Rock and the couple’s appointed wedding singer, pop star Bruno Mars.
