My father was in the Army, my father-in-law retired Army, my mother-in-law Army, my stepfather retired Air Force and my nephew is active Navy. Mere words do not approach the gratitude that our country holds for those who guard our safety. I’m reminded of these words - “Theirs is the example of devotion, determination and dedication to which we all should aspire. On this day we honor them for their willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to assure those rights and freedoms for all of you and for all generations to come. To those whom we remember by name, and to those whose names we have never heard, we raise our glass on this day in humility and thanks.” - John Bridges and Bryan Curtis. My hope is that each of you had a happy and safe Memorial Day this year. As we move into June, I am excited to remind you that we are once again offering Summer Swim Lessons, on site, to members and grandchildren of members (See Page 16). I also want to point out that we are a “low key club,” but there are rules for the pool that must be followed for the safety of our members. The list of them can be found on the exterior of the pool itself, on our website and also on the weekly email blast. A new change which I am pleased to announce is that we will have a lifeguard on duty on Mondays even though the Clubhouse is not open. We will also have poolside beverage service on a limited basis. So, if you want the service more permanently, get thee to the pool! Congrats to our Capdeville Team (Vipers), led by Hunter Riddle, on their 3rd place finish at the opening of the Capdeville Regatta at Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans! It was blowing 15-25 knots. Several boats turtled during the race and there was no sailing at all on the second day of the regatta due to the squalls. As you will see in our Fleet Captain’s report, Thursday Night Sailing is in full swing. The events start at 5:30 pm each Thursday. I sailed with the crew of “Atlantic Union” led by Paul & Rachel Gillette this past Thursday. I have to admit that, being a newbie, I have questioned the source of random bruises. I think they are part of the “lot in life” of a sailor. Our Sailing Director has me sailing the RS Ventures, the 420, parasailing and now, sailing on the Gillette’s 40 foot Beneteau. Cesar has flexible times when he can work you into his schedule for private lessons, or you can take advantage of our Summer Adult Sailing Camps beginning this June (See Page 16). The hours are planned around “working sailors” and begin at 5:00 pm. Don’t tell me you are too busy! There is nothing like being on a boat and leaving the crazy behind. Sailing allows, or rather demands, you keep your head inside the boat (figuratively and literally)! My next competitive adventure will be over Father’s Day weekend at the Challenge Cup in Gulfport, MS. Go PYC!

WORLD COMPETITION 2 YEARS AGO Midwinter Opti Galloway Optimist US WORLD OPTI TEAM 2017 Team Trials Championship Regatta 3rd Place in Top 5 #1 GYA Sailor 1st Overall Commodore Guy Brierre Pictured with Southern Yacht Club Coach Arthur Woody Blodgett

For those of you who may think that the “little boats” (Optis) are not possibly capable of real competition, I ask you to look at 11-year- old Gil Hackel! Gil began his sailing career at Pensacola Yacht Club at the ripe old age of 5 in the Summer Sailing Program. From the beginning, he wanted to be on the water every day, and he signed up for all of the camp sessions that summer. Since then, Gil has won many of the GYA (Gulf Yachting Association) sponsored youth regattas at one time or another. He was awarded Top GYA Sailor at this past Spring Team Trials, finishing3rd Overall, and he has competed at the National Level for 3 years. Gil has traveled to far away places and sailed in many exotic destinations such as Singapore; the North Seas of Belgium; Lake Garda, Italy; Argentina, Chile; and coming up, Antigua. PYC often comments on his travels and accomplishments, but I feel compelled to draw your attention to his most recent success! Gil has been chosen to be on the US World Opti Team! There are only 5 sailors selected, based on the Team Trials results, which were held recently at the California Yacht Club in Marina Del Ray, California. Gil finished in 3rd Place, is the youngest kid on the team and will be traveling alone, training with the team for most of the summer. Let me remind you that he is an 11-year-old and is in 5th grade! I only see the stars as the limit for this kid. Go Gil!

ENTREPRENURAL NEW MEMBERS BROOKE & JAMES PARKHURST

PAGE 4 | JIB SHEET Vice Commodore’s Comments Johnny Smith Facilities: • It’s been a fairly quiet month regarding facilities. As you’ve noticed by now, the new carpet and paint in the Clubhouse look great. Dockmaster Greg Spitzer and his crew have continued to upgrade the looks of the grounds with work on the flowerbeds and landscaping. In addition, they have removed the dead limbs from the oak trees behind the Clubhouse, and they look much better. • As your Vice Commodore, I am overseeing maintenance projects along our beach retaining wall and the concrete area near our hoist and launching ramps. Repairs to the East Marina erosion problem and the settling concrete between the dock crane and south bulkhead should begin soon. • At the last Board of Directors Meeting, a motion was approved to direct General Manager Warwick, to accept either of the two bids received, at his discretion, to repave the former tennis courts to provide additional guest parking. The newly repaved area will be incorporated into the existing guest parking lot creating a much larger guest parking area, thereby taking stress off the member parking lot. • A new air conditioner for Ballroom B in the Clubhouse has already been installed.

“Maxine” Replacement: • By the time you read this, we will have closed on the purchase of a replacement boat for “Maxine” - a 2003 Mainship 390 Trawler named “Persistence” in Tarpon Springs. By now, the boat may well be at our marina! The boat was purchased as a partnership between the Club and the Satori Foundation for use as our PYC Race Committee Boat and as a bare boat charter boat for the Satori Foundation. Each entity owns a 50% share of the boat, with all maintenance and upkeep costs being equally shared, as well. A delivery crew consisting of Bob Kriegel, Ken Branch and P/Cs Ron Bruce and John Matthews have volunteered to bring the boat from Tarpon Springs to Pensacola after the Memorial Day weekend. After the boat has been put into service, “Maxine,” the 1982 Wellcraft Californian 34, which has served us well for many years, will be sold.

Just curious: What does it mean when your boat starts giving off blue & red smoke upon being sprinkled with Holy Water?

Blessing of the Fleet Winner “Alafair” (see Page 12) Feeling “blessed”! Proud of our win!

SATORI FOUNDATION

Ann & Dan Smithson Wish to thank the Satori Foundation for hosting the Pensacola Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 566 & Oncology nurses from Sacred Heart Hospital Auxiliary Unit 566 PAGE 5 | JIB SHEET Rear Commodore’s Comments Tom Pace The word for my day today is … “Wow … just a big, whopping WOW!!!” I am proud and excited that our PYC has now reached our year-end 2019 membership goal of 725 Total Members ... and it is only MAY! As of right now, we are capped at our maximum number, and will work hard to retain as many members as possible through the continued excellence from our management team, Chef Artie, and the full staff at PYC. We have initiated a waiting list policy for prospective new members, and hope to be able to maintain that overall number of 725 by adding in those new members as existing ones may choose to resign from the Club. This usually happens for career decisions or moving out of our area. Going forward, your Board of Directors will be focused on meeting the expectations of our members to the level that very few will ever want to resign from PYC.

As in any growth, some changes will occur … however, we will strive to keep the comfortable, casual atmosphere of PYC fully intact as we continue to really focus on everything necessary to being “The South’s Finest”! One change, to those who have been at PYC when we had far fewer numbers, will be adjusting to a bustling and well-attended Club. We WILL be crowded on Friday nights, but this is the good and very awesome fun we are now so fortunate to experience. We can all help to make this easy by working with our managers. Especially on the weekends, and increasingly during the week, dinner reservations are simply a great way to ensure a table of your choice.

Quickly glance around our 22 acres … our grounds, marina, and Clubhouse have rarely looked better, and new grass is being grown near the Junior Sailing Center. Vice Commodore Johnny Smith is overseeing maintenance projects along our beach retaining wall and the concrete area near our hoist and launching ramp. Our menu has changed and has been a major hit! If you haven’t tried it, the Grouper Rockefeller is exceptional, as is just about everything that comes out of our kitchen. Club Manager Scott Seagers continues to bring in high quality events, and between him and General Manager Jim Warwick, they continue to maintain the best standards possible.

PYC is a Member Club of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC). Dr. Andy Candela and I recently attended the May meetings in Marathon, thus maintaining our good standing within the Council. This allows our reciprocity with the 35 other clubs in the group, and collectively we represent nearly 50,000 boaters across Florida.

I will be either regatta chairman or otherwise heavily involved in several upcoming events, and this is a fantastic time for any interested member to get a look at sailing events we put on at PYC. We are inclusive, and ALL are welcomed to be a part of every aspect from interaction with our visitors to being a part of the event committees - As noted in the Fleet Captain’s column, the Junior Olympic Festival and Flying Scott North Americans will be our next big events, so be on the lookout for news on our website and Facebook page. We will definitely be emailing schedules of these regattas as time draws near, which will make it easier for everyone to understand just who some of these sailors may be and the type of boats being raced.

PYC is gaining national recognition for our sailing efforts, and more people than ever are looking our way. Whether you sail or not, this is something of which to be very proud. Your Club is hitting on all cylinders, we are certainly going to continue to impress others, and we will work to keep our own members at the top of those efforts!

Aloha! To m You are invited to a . . . New Member Reception Tuesday, June 11th 6 pm to 8 pm Ball Room A • Meet fellow New Members, Board of Directors & Officers Dr. Andy Candela & I • Enjoy hors d’oeuvres & Open Bar during first hour represented PYC at FCYC in • Receive a very special gift! Pensacola, Florida scored big with American Magic! Pensacola FL, May 16, 2019: CEO/skipper Terry Hutchinson has revealed that the New York Yacht Club American Magic team, a challenger for the 36th ’s Cup defense, will be coming back to Pensacola for a second winter training program on Pensacola Bay next November. That’s a big score for Pensacola. This was fresh news to most in the audience at the National Naval Aviation Museum for an afternoon presentation on Tucker Thompson’s America’s Cup tour, although the plan to return to Pensacola was a poorly kept secret around the famous Blue Bar at Pensacola Yacht Club. The news brought a big round of applause. Now everybody knows American Magic is coming back to their Port of Pensacola winter base in late October. Like last winter, they should begin sailing in November. Hutchison said that both the AC75#1, which should be testing in Newport in August and AM38, the MULE, will be sailing on Pensacola Bay until AC75#1 ships out for Italy in spring 2020. He said, “The local community here has been unbelievably supportive of what we are doing. Of any place we could have gone in the country, the only thing that happened here is that everyone says ‘Yes’. . .The bay is an untapped resource for sailing.” American Magic’s plan to return to Pensacola next winter is big news for Cup fans worldwide. The activity on Pensacola Bay will be intense as all the sailing world watches. Eyes of sailors around the world will focus on Pensacola. ... cooperated and American Magic is coming back for their second winter. Class event managers have discovered that Pensacola Bay is the best sailing venue in North America and maybe the world. American Magic coming here, like the USODA Nationals we hosted last summer, has helped showcase Pensacola. It’s no secret anymore. Sailors can catch the magic in Pensacola.

As always, Mother’s Day at PYC was a sumptuousMother’s affair - the most delicious andDay “atmospheric” in Pensacola. In fact, everyone was so busy dining and hugging and laughing that there were no photos to publish of this great event, More touching, however, is that everyone was feeling especially sentimentalA this year.Time This year, to a numberRemember of people posted photographs of their moms in years past. It seems appropriate to share them with all of you. They warmed my heart so much that I feel that you deserve the same!

PAGE 11 | JIB SHEET Blessing of the Fleet The Blessing of the Fleet was held on April 28th, under beautiful blue skies, which encouraged the large number of participating boats. Sailboats and powerboats were festooned with flags, as well as very festive crewmembers! After the boats were blessed and the judges had made their decisions, formalities continued with the renaming of P/C Susan & Ian McKinnon’s new Tartan. She was appropriately named “Bubbles” and proper homage was paid to each force of the sea and wind. Cases of champagne were necessary for multiple ordained toasts and for the appeasement of the watery gods of the sea. Poseidon and Neptune both slept soundly that night as well as the Wind Guardians of each Cardinal Point.

Gil Hackel has been selected to be on the US Optimist Dinghy Association Team representing the United States for the 2019 Worlds Championship in Antigua, July 6-16. Gil is the youngest member of the team. This is a major achievement and recognition, since only five young people are selected out of 1,000’s of participating Opti sailors. (See Page 4)

RACHAEL AND PAUL GILLETTE WIN “CONCH REPUBLIC CUP” Rachael and Paul Gillette sailed “Atlantic Union II” several hundred miles to Key West, and then sailed the 90-mile 2019 Conch Republic Cup (their 10th!! – Think about it!) from Key West to Marina Hemmingway, Havana, Cuba, and won the 25-boat fleet. The race started April 27. One of the huge rewards, of course, is the chance to visit historic Cuba and be part of traditions begun so many years ago. They are now part of a special and limited fraternity. Congratulations!

“CANCER SOCIETY/5-FLAGS REGATTA” RESULTS: Sailed April 27th, too late for the May Jib Sheet, 11 boats competed. PYC members, Stephen Nichols, Jeff Hunt, and Hunter Riddle took 1st, 2nd, 3rd, in the Spinnaker Division. PYC member Bob Kriegel won 1st place in the Non-Spinnaker division, and Navy YC members, Fred Locke, and Julie & Kim Connerley took 2nd and 3rd respectively. Congratulations to all, and thanks to all who helped raise money for the Cancer Society.

Sally & I enjoyed the Bubbles aboard “Bubbles”!

THURSDAY EVENING RACING IS BACK! Pensacola summers start early. The water is warm, and the sun stays out long enough to enjoy a couple of hours of sailing in perfect breezes. We meet on the beach with your favorite launchable boat, and we sail around the channel markers. Be ready to start at 5:30 pm. Juniors and adults will be competing in your own Sunfish/Laser/etc., or you may check with Sailing Director César, to see if a Club boat is available. Afterwards, we gather for hamburgers and beer/soda for only $0.00/person. That is not a mistake! The food is FREE for those who sail and help, but the fellowship is priceless. Thanks to PYC Secretary Steven Orr, for donating the food for us. This was a lot of fun last year, and we want to continue the tradition.

JOIN THE RACE COMMITTEE FUN! We have several different regattas scheduled to make 2019 an exciting and interesting year. A great way to enjoy yachting at PYC is to participate on a race committee. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. It even includes the famous “Free Lunch!” Contact our Race Committee Chairman, Bob Madden: [email protected], and he will connect you with the perfect regatta and position for you. Bob is also our chief scorer this year working with Maryanne, DO, César, and others who have done this before. This will keep one person from having to do this all of the time. You might like to help with scoring and be the first to know who won! Similarly, Richard Brent is our judge/protest chairman (in addition to being PRO for some regattas) to be sure we have appropriate qualified judges for the level of event being hosted. We are fortunate to have Charlie Harp, with his experience, to often be our head judge and César Travado, our Sailing Director, to help as needed.

A SPECIAL RC OPPORTUNITY IS TO BE A REGATTA CHAIRPERSON Most people naturally know how to party, and this is a great way to be that PARTY PERSON. The chairpeople will promote the regatta while they plan a special and fun event. The race committee will, of course, be completely managed by the RC chairs, and Sally Smith will provide the trophies. The NOR’s and SI’s are already written. This is fun and gets you involved with the exciting part of the Club. Ask the Fleet Captain for details and opportunities.

ADULTS INTERESTED IN LEARNING TO SAIL I still get asked about this, so not everyone is reading my monthly column. Our new RS Ventures are here, rigged, and ready to go. They are fantastic boats for teaching adults to sail. They are fun, responsive, but also stable and safe. There will be opportunities for dinghy sailing (C420’s, Lasers, Sunfish) as well as larger keelboats such as Satori’s Tartan 28, “Second Wind”. If you have been thinking about this, it is time to act. Get in line. César will happily teach you the skills needed for loving sailing for the rest of your life. Rates vary.

PENDING OFFSHORE RACE/RENDEZVOUS REGATTA Offshore Regatta for 2019 Update: The planning committee, chaired by DJ Johnson and Mike Patterson, is close to having final plans. Tentatively, there will be a domestic Offshore Race/Rally to St. Petersburg YC, to start on November 1. A “Reserve the Date” announcement will hopefully be made very shortly. It was determined that there is not enough time to adequately plan and prepare for an international race this year. However, this same committee will begin planning for an international race to be held in 2021 after the next Isla Mujeres Race. As your Fleet Captain, I will assist the committee. Others will be recruited.

This was the third year in a row that Steven and Julie Orr tried to host a raft up at Pirate’s Cove. Alas, it was not to happen again this year. The last 2 years, the weather was most uncooperative. This year the Blessing of The Fleet had to be rescheduled because the weather was horrendous the first two (!) weekends it was scheduled. Unfortunately, the new “Blessing” date coincided with the date of the raft up. Steven and Julie made the decision to move the raft up destination to Fort McRee to give everyone a chance to participate in both events. Approximately 20 PYC boats anchored for the weekend along with many other boaters enjoying the prettiest weekend so far this year. The afternoon was spent beach combing, dinghy riding, and visiting on each other’s boats. A few of us were fortunate enough to spot a beautiful sea turtle swimming leisurely through the anchorage. We were happy to welcome Janet and Neil Davies home along with their crew, Tracy and Larry Cost. They had just completed a 5-month adventure bringing their new Lagoon catamaran, “Midnight Sun III” home from France. They had plenty of stories to tell and were happy to give tours of their new baby. The early scouts had secured a spot on the beach and almost 60 members joined us for delicious boiled shrimp just before sundown. Sunday morning found 40 of us back on the beach for our usual Bloody Mary/Mimosa Brunch. The variety of brunch dishes is always amazing. All to soon, it was time to pack up and head home for those participating in the Blessing of The Fleet. We went back to the marina, decorated the boats, picked up guests and crew and headed back out for the parade. It was a wonderful weekend for everyone involved in either or both events. Thank you, Steven and Julie, for ordering the perfect weather for a great raft up Note: Our next raft up will be on the weekend of June 15, hosted by Chuck & Peg Minnich. The location has not yet been announced, so check PYC’s Facebook page or look for an email blast from PYC. (See Page 16.)

The Eureka Springs area is famous for its haunted houses, Glass Church, and Beaver Lake with 487 miles of shoreline on the White River. They then rode back across Missouri and south toward home. That looks like a nice destination and a great road trip! Where are you headed next Barry?

The PYC Hospitality Committee schedules volunteers from the membership to sell Split Tickets every Friday night. No experience is necessary. We will be happy to train you.

It is a very good way for New Members to get to know other Club members. If you are interested in volunteering, please email you name and contact information to Ann-Marie Bowyer at [email protected].

The Hospitality Committee appreciates the membership’s continuing support of Split Ticket sales on Fridays at the Club. The money we raise goes to support improvements at PYC.
