All of us thank WATERLINES Ken for his hard work and dedication over the past year getting the Official Newsletter of the Grand Traverse Yacht Club Club up and running. 2009 was a year that all of us will remember as 13615 S. Pasty Fundraiser for TACS Sailing Program that serves those with Disabilities

“Before my diving accident 30 years ago, I sailed a laser” said Steve Rutkowski. Steve is a quadri- plegic and sailor in TACS new adapted sailing program. Over the years Steve has tried to figure out how he could get back into sailing. Because of the TACS program at the Cornwell Sailing Center on Boardman Lake, Steve, and a dozen other individuals with disabilities were able to sail independently last summer. The boats, docks, and transfer lifts were designed to accommodate all individuals. Our special Access 303 boat allows participants to maneuver the boat with a joystick. Our goal is to have 100 participants sail in the adapted sailing program in the summer of 2010! For more information, to make a donation or to see www.tacsailing.com (select Adapted Sailing) We are having a pasty fundraiser to raise the funds to purchase our 2 nd Access 303 boat. When: Sat. Jan.23 rd (pasties will be made at the TBA Career Tech Center on Parsons Rd.) Pick up after 6:00 or from 11:00-2:00 on Sun. Jan 24 th . To Order, Sign up at GTYC or email Barb Hutchens at [email protected] or 231-649-7117 with your order. Pasties are $6.00 each or $5.00 if you order 10 or more. MERRY CHRISTMAS

In northern Michigan we sure know how to have fun. Yes, this is a real picture taken 5 Dec 2009 and that is real on the bow of the boat and on the shore across the bay.

Santa was delivered on a Cal 40 to a waiting dingy for a ride to shore. The Grand Traverse Yacht Club hosts a chil- dren's Christmas Party each year and Santa always arrives by . Santa and his elves sail or motor (if no wind) around the bay for several hours before coming to shore. Meanwhile, the children enjoy crafts and cookie decorating. As Santa gets close the children bundle up and go outside and enjoy the excitement of Santa's arrival. This has been going on for 10 to 12 years.

I'm not sure, but I think Santa and his elves have more fun than the chil- dren. Some of the elves have been with Santa since the first year.

Friday January, 22nd is Caribbean Night at the Club. The Social Commit- tee hasn't yet set the menu but they are planning on having a Salsa band there for live music.

GTYC Friday Night Crew Dinners Will Begin in January! The Cruiser Fleet will start off on Friday, January 8th but Friday, January 29th is still open for anyone interested. Contact Steve at [email protected] with their boat name and theme for the dinner. Misc Ramblings …………………………………………………………...………………..PC40 HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! What a great year 2009 was with the new Club, lots of great events, many old friends, and plenty of new ones too. My compliments to Commodore Ken for an excellent reign and welcome to ‘pastdome’. I hope that you and Bev enjoy this ‘cruise’ for a long long time. Also, many kudos to Ian for a job well done, and to Jacque- lyn, Chris, and Chef Patrick for helping to make GTYC such an enjoyable place to be. Now on to 2010 — Our first season of the year is iceboating and it started this past Sunday at Birch Lake just north of Elk Rapids. It will be hard to top last season with the DN Worlds held on Torch Lake, but we are hosting the North Americans in the Central Lakes District and we always hope it will be nearby for those that like to come out and watch. The District Regatta is set for Jan 16/17 and the NAs set for Feb 27 thru Mar 06 with the GTIYC Fun Regatta later in March. Keep track at www.gtiyc.com or www.dnamerica.org/forum or come to a meeting the first Tuesday of each month. For last minute info call the hotline — 922-3836. There is usually an extra boat set up if you want to try it or a two-seater if you just want a ride. This is also the time of year that we should be refreshing our knowledge of the rules. Some significant changes to the RRS have been introduced effective Jan 1st. Check them out at www.sailing.org/30355 and also plan to at- tend the Rules Seminar in April hosted by Boyne City Yacht Club. As soon as the ice is out of Boardman Lake, the High School Sailing Teams will be practicing (yes, they wear dry suits) and heading to regattas throughout the Midwest. The teams are 9th - 12th graders from many of the area high schools and we also have 8th graders that practice with the teams. If you know anyone that might be inter- ested, watch for the organization meeting in the spring or let one of the TACS Board Members know. This year TACS & GTYC will be hosting a High School Regatta in the fall. If you would like to host any of the sailors in your home please talk to Sally Rivard or Jim Sorbie. The GTYC season starts in May with the Spring Series and a Middle Distance Race. Other than the fall High School Regatta, I’m not aware of any special events scheduled for the Club this year, but we will continue to grow the Hound Dog and Omena events and attract more visiting boats. Fleet news - so far there is another Tripp 26 joining the fleet so Spin B should be a little more interesting this year. In addition to the usual events in our area, the International Moths will be holding their North Americans in Harbor Springs August 6 - 8. If you haven’t seen any of the videos from this past summer’s Worlds at the Gorge check them out at www.mothworlds2009.org/ . They are truly amazing craft. I mentioned SPOT satellite tracker again last month and soon after saw a release from them and Boat/US. http:// www.findmespot.com/en/index.php?cid=115 You can now directly access Boat/US towing with a SPOT. Here’s a few interesting photos ( http://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/photos/09/1127/ ) from Sailing Scuttlebutt a few weeks ago. Interesting comparison of the fixed wing on the BMW Oracle 90’ Trimaran that is on it’s way to Valen- cia (via cargo ship) to face off w/ ’s 90’ catamaran for the ’s Cup in February. At least that’s what is supposed to happen. Lots going on in the New York Supreme Court and in Valencia. Follow all the action on www.sailinganarchy.com and www.sailingscuttlebutt.com . And, for you techno-geeks w/ iPhones - Race Tools Timer ia a full function racing countdown timer application for the iPhone. This app can be configured to operate in either standard or custom sequences, making it easy to sync up or down, add and subtract minutes and seconds, and provide several different sound signals during count- down. Here’s the link — http://www.h4sw.com/index.php?p=1_2_Products . Now if they’d just make them - proof!!! My last item this month is for all of you bachelors at the Club. I urge every one of you to read this story - www.ocregister.com/news/police-223954-burdette-fire.html - as there is a lesson to be learned here. All for now — SEE YOU ON THE ICE!!! A FUN GTYC EVENT!

The committee has been busy Up on the mezzanine level. Furnishings will include comfortable chairs with loveseats and tables arranged to create two very inviting conversation spaces. These are intended to complement the two new high top tables with bar stools which arrived last week and were placed to take advantage of the best yacht club view on the Great Lakes ! Enjoy it ! The committee has worked diligently to integrate everyone's preferences, not a task for the faint hearted. Jean Risk and Shaun Schneider led the research and devised a setting that will surely become the favorite informal relaxed social space in the Club. Back on the main level, a tremendous collection of photos has been selected from the work of Club members and professional photographers Dietrich Floeter and Glen Rauth. These will be arranged along the side walls. On the west wall, two elegant trophy cases being designed and crafted by member Larry Weese will flank the projection screen. Plans for the Commodores Room are well along. It took a bit of creativity to find wall space for Club memorabilia plus an- other 50 years of Commodores ! The last key space to be designed is the entryway. It will be used to highlight some Club history, appropriate recognition for officers and staff, and last but for sure not least, recognition for the member and donors. These results mean quite a bit. Quite a bit of thinking, quite of bit of work, quite a bit of what we'll call 'compromise', and oh yes, quite a bit of $$$$.

Show 'em the Money … The mission of the rebuilding and commissioning committees has been to construct and furnish our new facility according to the needs and desires of the membership. As the building took shape, money was paid out. Lots of it. As the furnishings are purchased, money is being paid out. Lots more of it. The Board has a responsibility to allocate available funds according to the Club's needs and there are needs over and above say, a bigger bar. Treasurer Dave and Comptroller Bud look over the Board's shoulders to observe and advise on the ebb and flow of income minus expenses. We are all working together, so for everyone there is a strict sense of spending awareness. For every expenditure, we need to "Show 'em the Money." For example, the tables, chairs, and bar stools cost about $30,000 but will last for 30 years. Furnishing the mezzanine will be every bit half of that number. The great hall with trophy cases and artwork together with the Commodores Room and entryway will take a like amount. So half that times two plus what we started with is like … $60,000. Remember that number. To date, over 70 GTYC members have contributed about $16,700 for an average of just under $240 each. If we factor out some particularly generous donations, the remainder still amounts to right at $200 per donor. Considering that we have 150 full members and a like number of social members, the potential could be $60,000. Recall that number? So we are 1/4 of the way there. But only a 1/4 of the way, so far. Then again, we've sat nearly becalmed on the Race from Chicago to Mackinac barely off Chicago's North Side a lot less than 1/4 of the way and we got there in good time! But like a Mac, we have a time limit in mind. We want to have the furnishings in place with all the sponsors lined up and paid up by the April Anniversary Party. So for the 200 plus members still waiting for the right opportunity: here it is, the time is now, spring is busting out all over, strike while the iron is hot, come to the aid of your fellow mariners, it's now or never (not really), sit down and take a load off, sponsor a chair! We have 80 to go! It's this simple … take out a piece of paper or last week's bar tab and write your name on it. Send it with a check for $150 for each chair or $100 to be recognized as a Club Sponsor to GTYC PO Box 131 Traverse City MI 49685. PC Bud tracks these payments carefully; we'll get in touch with you about the inscription on your chair plaques. You forgot about the plaques? We didn't! The first batch of plaques are being engraved now and should be showing up not long after you read this. YOU should be in the next batch for chairs and the donor plaque.

PC40 It’s been a busy month with a lot of activity at the Club and elsewhere. A few GTYC members ventured down to Key West for Race Week and should be home now with lots of stories to tell and maybe a few that will stay there. I have not heard from Ruth Railsit- ter, but I’m sure she was there checking up on everyone. We had over 80 iceboats on Lake Charlevoix at Boyne City the 16th & 17th for the DN Centrals & Ice Opti NAs and the town received us warmly with many coming out to watch. We had 57 DNs competing; 13 Ice Optis, and the rest cruising. The ice was a little rough, but not too bad. We had good wind on Saturday, but it only teased us on Sunday so we only completed 3 races per fleet. Congrats to our own Julie Richards who was 1st in the Silver Fleet beating out 25 men for the honors. Go Julie!!! Other local sailors competing were Dick Wollam, Bob Gray, and Bill Cutting. Chris and Lois Stoppel set up the ‘Bob Stay Café’ and served up some mean seafood gumbo on Saturday afternoon which was well received by the hungry sailors. The next scheduled event is the DN North American Championship from Feb 27 - Mar 6 which will attract sailors from across the country to somewhere in our Central Lakes District, hopefully nearby. I will notify the membership when we pick a spot. The GTIYC Fun Regatta will take place the weekend after the NAs on the best ice near TC. This will be your best chance to catch a ride or try out iceboating as there will be all kinds of boats there. For some great photos go to www.zenfolio.com/greatlakesimages or www.gretchendorian.com . This past weekend, Barb & Steve Hutchens and a hard working group of about 20 volunteers made over 700 pasties as a fundraiser for TACS!!! Ginni and I helped and we had a great time. Thank you to all of you that or- dered pasties, I’m sure you will enjoy them as we already have. Next year we’ll go for 1000!!! The final #s are not in, but this fundraiser will more than pay for the balance of our 2nd Adaptive Sailboat that is on order for the com- ing season. Our adaptive program has grown rapidly thanks to Barb and we have some great plans for this sea- son. We’re also hoping to buy at least one more 420 for the High School Team so they will have enough boats for team racing. We’ve got some fresh ideas for this season and the new brochures are available at the Club or online at www.tacsailing.com . One of the things that we should all be thinking about in preparing for our next season of boating is first aid train- ing. How many of you are truly prepared to take care of someone on your boat in an emergency??? If you are out in a remote area, assistance may be hours away or maybe not available at all. We have hosted some Ameri- can Red Cross classes in the past and are planning to do so again this year, probably in March or April. If you are interested in attending a First Aid/CPR class at the Club, I will have a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board. Also, if you are interested in Automatic Defibrillator (AED) certification, it can be offered as an add-on if there is enough interest. Lots of techno-geek stuff this month — • New Free Wind Application for Your iPhone or iPod Touch! WeatherFlow ( www.weatherflow.com ) announces the release of their newest wind tracking application - windAlert . • Remember the Magellan app for iPhones from a few months ago??? Now they are offering a car kit to hold your iPhone and completely integrate it with you car. Lots of cool features and it only costs $130. Runs With Scissors to join Yacht Club I would like to formally announce that Jason Massaroni and Steph Jarvis, jumping in over their heads, have purchased a Tripp 26 to race in Spin B this summer. We would like to thank everyone who has supported and encouraged us over the years. We will wave as you sail by! We also welcome any advice, wisdom, or encouragement from everyone at the club. SOCIAL EVENTS

Wednesday nights at the club have been great. Members are there having dinner, joining friends, holding meetings, and playing euchre, which has really taken off. Stop in some Wednes- day and join the fun.

The planning for the Caribbean party is nearly done and it is sure to be a tropical getaway and a great time.

On Saturday, January 30th there will be a private screening at the club of the movie Master and Commander starring Russell Crowe. A special menu will be available and popcorn, of course.

Mark your calendars for February 12th to attend the 2010 GTYC Mardi Gras party. A fabulous Cajun menu is being planned and live music is being arranged. We are always looking for help with decorations so if you would like to be involved let us know.

NOTICE TO MEMBERS:

Well, it’s official: 2010 is the year that Waterlines will go paperless. I met with Commodore Steve and Jim Sorbie to look at Constant Contact (www.constantcontact.com), which is what Jim uses for TACS. I get an email from at least one member every month requesting to get off the mailing list, since they read the newsletter online. If we were to remove the people that do not want it mailed it would cancel our bulk rate. So, the decision has been made to go completely paperless, but we need your input. Who of you out there would like to continue to receive this publication via the US Postal Ser- vice? If so, would you be willing to pay a “subscription fee” to help offset the cost of printing and mailing it out each month? How much would you be will- ing to pay? It needs to be known that the new version will not look the same as what I use now. Since it is in an email format there is no way to have the page breaks, so it will look like, well, an email. There are a lot of things to deter- mine—so I need your input (especially those of you that do not have or use a computer and only receive this publication via mail). At this point I would like to go paperless starting April or May edition. Please—contact me via mail (C/ O GTYC), phone (231) 947-8409, email at [email protected] or find a board member or the Commodore and talk with them. This is OUR club and we ALL have a voice.

Dannielle Higgins, Waterlines Editor PS: for those of our members that pay to advertise, I would like to get your feedback in how you would like to be represented in the new format. Thanks!

He declared it still un- der warranty and presented the Club with a newly inscribed one. Davie's program was a mix of humor, high adventure rac- ing, and thoughtful questions of philosophy and motiva- tion. During his three Around Alone races there was lots of time to contemplate the nature of racing and the drive to be there ( first ) which he summed up as "... how badly do you want it?" He still reflects on "... what is it that all came to- gether to let me find a boat and do this ... three times?" For excitement, there was a dismasting in the southern ocean on his first race and a broken high-tech rudder stock on the first leg of his most recent race. Being on your own at sea is plenty of motivation. Lying beam to wallowing in some of the coldest, longest-fetched waves on the planet is more motivation. Recovering from the dismasting meant cutting away the collapsed mast and rigging, building up an A-frame jury rig of spinna- ker pole and boom, setting some sideways jibs and logging 170 plus miles in one 24 hour period while sliding along through the bergy ice water past Cape Horn and on to the Falkland Islands. The rudder problem brought its own set of challenges. Just off the coast of South America, steering was lost on the first leg from Charleston to Cape Town. Safety was 250 miles or so westward to the South American coast while Capetown was some- thing like 2400 miles to the east. Riiiiight. Capetown it is. Steering with trailing warps, (long lines trailed in the water that create drag on port or starboard as needed), he made it to Capetown but lost more than 40 pounds on ever decreasing rations. Why Capetown? Stay in the race . It all comes down to "... how badly do you want it?" He commented thoughtfully on GTYC's post-fire energy and action likening it to dealing with those disasters at sea noting that as soon as the tea is made, you think ahead to the rest of the race. And when you finish the race you are already thinking about the next one. About the tea. The race headquarter's advice via high-frequency radio on dealing with calamity..."first have a cup of tea" He is thinking about 'the next one' and planning how to make it happen considering that mounting a effec- tive effort these days will take upwards of 3 million Interlake Fleet dollars. When asked about the near term and did he ever do a Chicago Mac, he grinned slyly describing Winter Gathering is on! a tri-hull in Milwaukee we might see on the line this Same fun as last winter at Loren year ... if all those things come together again. Newton's digs ("Nourish"). It will be the traditional, Interlaking Thursday PC Tom Cowell evening. Stay tuned to your e-mails for a date. Remember that potential fleet members are also invited. GTYC racers participated in the 2010 Key West Race Week. Vice Commodore Katie Horvath, PC 45 Doug Wipperman and PC 37 Tom Babel (aka “Tom Babel Sailing Services”) raced on Rush, a J/109 owned by Bill Sweetser from Annapolis, MD, placing 2nd for the PH-2 class. After winning five out of ten races, collecting 1st place daily trophies four out of five days and having tactician Ba- bel’s brilliant coaching, Rush came merely one point short of 1st place PH-2 overall. Dave Gerber raced on Flash Gordon, a Farr 40 owned by Helmut Jahn from Chicago, IL, placing 10th in the F40 class. Overall attendance and winds were lighter than past years, but no complaints about the Key West sunshine!

Many of the new Members at GTYC may not be familiar with TACS and the services that we provide to the commu- nity. TACS is a charitable organization that was formed in 1994 by a local group of sailors, many GTYC Members, with the idea of making sailing opportunities available to ALL youth in the Grand Traverse region. A partnership was formed with the City of Traverse City and we were allowed to use Hull Park on Boardman Lake as our sailing site. The first season was limited with volunteer instructors and borrowed boats, but that Winter a strong group of volun- teers built a modest fleet of Optimist Prams and we have grown from there. After 16 years of hard work by our all-volunteer Board of Directors (currently 12 of 14 are GTYC Members) we now have a fleet of around 75 small , 5 or 6 safety boats, a staff of USSailing certified instructors, and a wonder- ful new boathouse, the Gordon and Jean Cornwell Family Sailing Center. Each Summer we bring sailing to around 350 young people ages 8 to 17 with our Basic Learn to Sail, Advanced Sailing, and TACS Racing Team programs. In addition we offer Adult Learn to Sail, Family Fun Night, Adaptive Sailing, High School Sailing Team, and, new this year, Open Sailing. Details are still being worked out, but hopefully we will introduce our new rowing program yet this year. Through the years we have enjoyed a wonderful relationship with GTYC and we can’t thank you enough for your sup- port. Our Board meets regularly at the Club on the 3rd Monday at 7pm from September through May and we have recently been allowed to keep a safety boat and hoist on the North dock. On Tuesday and Thursday evenings the Laser and Interlake Fleets have welcomed our TACS Racing Team sailors and many are now sailing on larger boats in the Wednesday night races and weekend events. This month we will hold an organizational meeting for the High School Sailing Team on Thursday, the 18th, at the Club. If you know anyone in 8th thru 12th grade that might be in- terested, please encourage them to attend this meeting. Sailing experience is not required as many start out as crew and learn from there. Later this year, Sept. 25/26, TACS and GTYC will co-host the Cressy Qualifier for the High School Single-Handed Championship Regatta with about 50 sailors coming from throughout the Midwest. TACS is always in need of support from the community. You can help us with cash donations for our scholarship fund or to help maintain and upgrade our fleet, boats and equipment to supplement our fleet, and you can volunteer to help with our various programs. If you are interested in helping TACS, talk to any of the Board Members or go to www.tacsailing.com . Subjects like draft placement and broadseaming will be covered and each student will have an opportunity to sew on the team-built sails. The class will participate in each step of making a sail, including design, lofting, broadseaming, and finish- ing. Marlinspike skills will also be touched on. Plus, each student will make their own canvas bucket to take home. The class will include handouts and the book, “Working Guide to Traditional Small Boat Sails”, by David Nichols.

GTYC IS GOING GREEN!!

So last month I wrote to you asking your opinion about stopping the mailings and going paperless with the newsletter. I’d like to thank those that responded and let you all know our decision: this will be the last mass printed newsletter for the Grand Traverse Yacht Club. Other than that, nothing changes. Not the (online) format, the delivery, or the access. Starting with April’s edition we will be emailing the link to view it and THAT’S IT. If you only receive this in the mail I NEED you to contact me so that we can set up a print/mail schedule for you (and at this point there would not be an extra cost associated). I have been looking at and working with Constant Contact (www.constantcontact.com) to see if we could merge into using that type of service, but to do so would ultimately limit what goes into the newsletter, so it was my recommendation to the Board that we con- tinue as is with the online distribution of Waterlines. I really like Constant Con- tact and would recommend it to anyone that might be looking for a way to track your emails to the audience as well as making a great email letter, etc., but it would not work for us unless we made huge changes to what we put in, which would ultimately limit entries.

I have been your editor for over 5 years, and in that time we have changed noth- ing. In our household the newsletter comes and is promptly put in the recycle bin. I require that articles and stuff be submitted the Monday after the board meeting to make sure that I have enough time to send it to the printers to get it to the masses in a timely fashion. By eliminating the mailing we can extend the deadline. I will also be eliminating the calendar and a few other things, all of which can be accessed on the website for the most up-to-date information. In changing to paperless we also help with keeping our club as green as we can. See Diane Hubert’s article below in what else can be done to help keep our club green.

See you at the club! Dannielle Higgins, Waterlines Editor

RECYCLING COMING TO GTYC AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

At the February board meeting it was decided that the club would become pro- active about our waste stream to the landfill. The ultimate goal would be a zero foot print for recyclable waste. To start, we will make every effort to recycle card- board, wine and liquor bottles, and all the plastic cups used at the bar.

What we need from the membership is a small extra effort to drain your cup in the disposal container that will be provided next to a special container marked for recy- cling where you can drop your cup. It is that simple. A club member has volun- teered to pick up the bags of used cups and take them to the recycle station. Misc Ramblings PC40 Although Michigan remains in an economic quagmire, there is one thing that all of us in Michigan can remain proud of and that is the Mackinac Bridge, or the ‘Mighty Mac’, now in its’ 53 rd year of proudly spanning the Straits of Mackinac. Earlier this month I was fortunate to be able to attend the First Day Issue Ceremony for the US Postal Service Commemorative Stamp honoring the Mackinac Bridge. It was a moving ceremony at Bridgeview Park in St. Ignace in full view of the bridge and was the first of these ceremonies to be held at the actual site of the stamp. For those of you not familiar with the history of the Mighty Mac, construction began in the Spring of ’54 after a long political fight led by State Senator Prentis Brown and Larry Rubin, first Executive Secretary of the Mackinac Bridge Authority, and it opened in the Fall of 1957. Larry Rubin attended the ceremony as did the granddaughter of Prentis Brown, Barbara Brown, who currently serves on the Authority. Over the years, the bridge has not only paid for itself, but it re- mains financially independent with the toll revenue paying for the ongoing maintenance. Truly a rarity in government projects!!! As a very young boy I remember riding with my Father on several occasions half way up the Lower Peninsula just to watch the construction from the shoreline and I also remember wait- ing in long lines to ride the car ferries across the Straits prior to the Bridge. I’ve driven everything from Ginni’s Miata, with the top down of course, to a semi load of milk across the bridge and have sailed un- der it many times. It is truly an engineering marvel that never ceases to amaze me. Arriving home, I dug through my ‘library’ and found my father’s copy of ‘Miracle Bridge at Mackinac’, written by D. B. Stein- man, Chief Engineer on the bridge, and am currently rereading it. One little known fact that I’d forgotten is that the site of the bridge was moved about 30’ North when it was discovered that the North Tower Pier was dangerously close to a steep drop-off in the bedrock. For more info on the Mighty Mac you may go to www.mackinacbridge.org/ As you read this, I should be off ‘somewhere’ helping to run the DN North American Championships . We were hoping that the event would be held nearby, but Mother Nature has not cooperated and it looks like the closest we might be is Big Bay DeNoc in the UP and there is also some chatter about Ver- mont and New Hampshire. Rumor has it that a couple of our members will have to drive the long way if we go East and will be closed out if they move it into Canada. Guess I’d better look for my passport!!! (you may also use the new Enhanced Drivers License when traveling to and from Canada, but the lead time for either is 2 - 3 weeks minimum.) Updates should be available online and I’ll try to send a few emails. The always popular GTIYC FUN Regatta will follow the NAs as soon as we have some good ice so stay tuned and be ready to come out and join us on the ice for a great weekend of fun, frolic, great food, and camaraderie!!! I wrote a short piece about the recently completed America’s Cup and its’ return to the United States which was distributed to the Club email list, but the links may have gotten lost in forwarding. If you didn’t get the piece and would like it or are interested in the links just shoot me an email and I’ll send a copy. For those that are interested, the rules website, Look to Windward , has some great posts explaining the penalties and some of the other rules issues. Speaking of rules, the Boyne City Yacht Club will host a Rules Seminar in April led by Deb Schoenner from Bayview in Detroit. Jed and I made the trip up last year and it was well worth the drive. More de- tails next month. There are a couple of Race Management Seminars this month if you are interested. Basic seminars will be hosted by Muskegon YC on 3/20 and South Shore YC in Milwaukee on 4/3. US- Sailing will pay the tuition for any 18 - 30 year old that wants to attend. Apply here .There is also an Ad- vanced Seminar in Chicago the weekend of 3/13-14. It is listed as Sold Out, but it might be worth a phone call. It’s Wed Night!!! may still be a couple of months away, but I’m starting to put together the prize pack- age for the year. If you would like to participate or have any ideas or suggestions, shoot me an email or see me at the Club. See you on the ice!!! Greetings from Race Committee With winter winding down (hopefully), it is time to start preparing for the 2010 race season. I wanted to remind everyone that our Sailing Instructions require you to have a PHRF Certifi- cate for 2009 or 2010 (every other year). If you do not have a 2009 certificate, please make sure you get one for 2010. You can download the form and instructions at lmphrf.org . The fee is $55 and these typically go up around March/April, but I could not find the cut-off date on their website. My suggestion would be to get these in sooner than later to avoid a higher cost. One design boats (i.e., Melges 24) do not need a certificate, but must meet class rules.

Mark Thompson has decided to participate in racing this year so we need to hire our on-the- water Race Committee. We do have a couple of ideas, but wanted to let everyone know about the change. If you have any thoughts or suggestions to fill this position, please let me know.

I am pleased to announce that Jed Mooney has joined the Race Committee. I am looking for another volunteer (or two). If you are interested in joining the team, please contact me at (231) 392.5701 or [email protected]

I will also be sending out emails to the Race Group announcing meetings, decisions, Notice of Race's, etc. If you are not currently on the GTYC Race email group, please let me know and we will get you added.

Last, but not least, I will be hosting two skipper's meetings to discuss the 2010 season, and get input for increasing participation and overall enjoyment and safety of our competitors. Please join us at the club on Wednesday March 10th and Wednesday March 24th. I will start the in- formal discussions at 6:00 PM in the Commodore's Room. We will discuss all or some of the following topics: (1) Race Course (2) Fleets, (3) Sailing Instructions, (4) starting sequence and (5) race schedule (although the 2010 Race Calendar is published and fairly final).

I look forward to a great 2010 Race Season!

FROM THE HELM By Steve Wyckoff, April 2010 Commodore

Soon we will be launching our boats for the 2010 season and that date can not come soon enough. Spring is here, we are all working on our boats….let‟s get the boats in the water!

We have some changes in the leadership of GTYC. Sadly, our Rear Commodore Jim Milliman is moving out of state and has offered his resignation to the GTYC Board. The Board voted at the March Board meeting to accept Jim‟s resignation and to appoint Jay Kraft as Rear Commodore. Congratula- tions to Jay! Jim will be missed….a great GTYC member and a great guy. Good luck Jim! Mac Van- Stratt has stepped up to volunteer to fill in for the remaining months of Jay‟s Board term until the fall election. Thanks to Mac for his continued support to GTYC.

On a negative note, we seem to have some smokers who are ignoring our smoking policy. By Board policy, smoking is only allowed on the launch ramp. If you look at the building entrance and behind the building, you will see evidence of smoking that violates this policy. Also, smoking has occurred in our restrooms. We all know that smoking was the cause of our fire in 2008 and I ask all members to step up and confront anyone you see smoking. The GTYC Board has a zero tolerance to anyone smoking out of the designated area.

April is a very busy month for our Club. The finishing of the interior includes the arrival of the mezza- nine furniture, the photo images on the walls of the Great Room, and the installation of the trophy cases. A beautiful building gets better as we continue to add our own finishing touches. Thank you to the Interior Design Committee for their hard work!

April is also the 50th anniversary of the founding of our Club. To celebrate this benchmark, the Social Committee has organized a couple of special events. April 11th is the Founders Day Brunch which will honor our past Commodores and the history of the GTYC. April 23rd is the GTYC 50th Birthday Party and the Spring Member‟s Meeting. Mark your calendar to be involved in these important days. April 24th is Club Clean-Up Day with many projects being organized by George, Cheri, and Ian. Plan on putting in a few hours to help out at the Club.

The GT Sail and Power Squadron has partnered with GTYC to provide a series of free boating classes in April and May at the Club. The courses will be held at the Club on Saturday mornings beginning April 10. Check out their website at www.gtbayboating.org for details.

What a great Club! See you there….

Amongst the tales and lies emerged a new scoring formula intended to mix things up. The highlight of this is a MidSummer Champ since that is when racing is at its peak. We are still looking for a "catchy" name for this award so please lets hear your creative ideas. First regatta is in Columbus on the first weekend of May. Our first GTYC race is the thursday after Memorial day as usual. Spring is here...get ready!!!! (Bob Sagan, [email protected])

Send newsletter articles, advertisements, pictures, or stories to: [email protected] Next deadline is Monday, April 26, 2010 The Grand Traverse Yacht Club newsletter Waterlines is published monthly.

We're trying to recapture and document the history of the club racing program. We've added a place on the website under "Racing" Where people can see a picture of a trophy and/or contribute a memory, picture or make a recommendation for "racing legend" of the decade.

The GTYC racing program is an important part of club activities. As part of our 50th Anniversary celebration this year we are asking former and current members to help us recapture and document events from the past 50 years of club sailing. Do you have a favorite mem- ory, picture, funny story, or tribute to a club sailor from the past?

Check out the list of "Sailing Legends" on our website. Photos of racing awards and names of club sailors are provided to help stimu- late your memories. To send your contribution to the club historian, click on a picture of an award and look for the "Make a Comment/Add a Memory or picture" link at the top of the page."

George Kobernus Moorings and Storage update: All of the mooring balls have been committed to for the 2010 season. Two members who had a mooring last year and took a pass this year, will have first right of refusal for a mooring next year. Rorke Miller took a pass for 2010 Bill Auxier took a pass for 2010 There are currently 5 people on the waiting list. The current list is: #1: Gregg Diehl (March ‟07) #2: George Kobernus (August ‟08) #3: Ed Ross (September ‟08) #4: Scott Monteith (January ‟10) #5: George Townsend (March ’10) An updated list will be maintained at the club on the bulletin board. All of the dry boat parking spaces at the club are full for the season. If you plan on using the dinghy dock this summer and have not filled out an application, please do so. Because of all of the pirate moorings in the area of the club, the dinghy dock will be policed more closely this summer so our members are not displaced when they return to the dock. A new policy will be implemented this year regarding storage of portable gas cans at the club. Storage of any portable fuel tanks will not be allowed on the club property. If you have any questions or comments, contact me via e-mail at [email protected]

Okay, the word is out. I’m Recycling at GTYC the recycle fairy that comes By Diane Hubert to the club every Thursday and Saturday morning to pick through the recycle receptacle. I stack the plastic cups and cart them off to the recycle station. Congratulations to us all in that we have recycled over 400 cups since we started collecting. We’re doing great! PLEASE HELP ME OUT. No deposit cans. Leave those at the bar. No popcorn or popcorn trays. They go in the garbage. No lemons, limes or swizzles. Ian has a bucket with a strainer in it. Please empty your cup before depositing it in the receptacle. No dirty paper plates and food scrap in the receptacle as this gets all the cups dirty, makes it disgusting, and I can’t recycle dirty cups. Additionally, on the topic of our waste footprint, we’ve used the china plates and real cutlery at a few recent dinners eliminating several bags of garbage. Thanks to those of you who cared enough to wash the dishes. To the right and above: Pictures from Kokomotown Friday Dinner

On April 11th there will be a potluck breakfast buffet beginning at 10:30 a.m. The club is providing a variety of egg dishes and ham. There will also be coffee, juice, and milk available. If you need to give some time to your club here is an opportunity, please contact Ann Abfalter, Bev Stepnitz, or Kelly Roscher.

April is Birthday month for GTYC! A group of boaters formed the Grand Traverse Yacht Club in April 1960. To commemorate fifty years we are having a little birthday party on Friday, April 23rd. The regular Friday night dinner menu will be available and there will be ice cream and birthday cake following the annual Spring membership meeting.

Friday night boat crew cook-off dinners continue a while longer, good food at a good price. The Oyster Clam Bake is coming up in May and the boating season begins! Yes! Misc Ramblings ...... PC40 Last week was a tough one for Doug Wipperman and his family with the unexpected passing of his oldest brother, „Wip‟. Many of us at GTYC had gotten to know ‟Wip‟ well as he and Doug‟s other brother, Dirk, had visited many times, particularly in the Fall for the Iceman Bike Race. Somehow you knew they were in town as the energy level around the Club seemed to pick up a bit in anticipation of their arrival and when they were there, fun was had by all. A small group of us traveled to Onekama on Saturday for a graveside service and heard many of his family members and friends talk about what a warm and loving person he was and how he lived life to its‟ fullest. Doug, on behalf of your extended family at GTYC, you have our deepest sympathy and fullest support. Another sad note, Bob Parkhurst, former GTYC Member and racer for many years, passed away recently at age 55. He sailed his boat, RAMPANT, on Wednesday Nights and at a few Red Fox Regattas. A memorial service will take place at a later date. Late Saturday evening (Mar 20th), Frank Cammas and crew, including American Stan Honey, set a new Jules Verne Trophy (round the world, non-stop, crewed) record or 48 days, 7 hours, aboard their monster trimaran, Groupama 3. Lots of coverage on their website as well as on Scuttlebutt and Anarchy. Interesting comparison to the year 2000 when the record stood at 71 days. I wrote last month about the possibilities of Big Bay DeNoc in the UP, and Vermont and New Hampshire for the DN North Ameri- cans. To make a long story short (HAH!!!), yes, iceboating is a „nomadic‟ sport. After several days of postponing the site selection, my phone rang during dinner Saturday evening and by 10am Sunday (Feb 28th) I was loading my gear in Dick‟s van and heading North to Thunder Bay, Ontario, with Dick, Julie, and Bill Cutting (GTIYC Vice-Comm). Because of the distance for many and the border issue for some, the #s were down from 90 pre-reg‟s to 58, but we were treated to some awesome ice, breathtaking scenery, and wonderful people. The only thing missing was WIND!!! Our arrival was accompanied by a week long high pressure system, but we did get the regatta in with the final race late Friday as the sun was setting. There are plenty of blogs, pictures, and stories on the iceboat websites, so I won‟t bore you here, but there was a very well done video by one of the locals that is well worth the watch. Listen closely, you might hear a familiar voice in the background. Oh, the FUN Regatta has been postponed to December, but the GTIYC Awards Banquet is set for Sunday, April 18th, and you are all welcome to join us for a fun and wonderful evening at the Club. If interested, see me at the Club or email me or Julie Richards. TACS held the Spring organizing meeting for the High School Teams last week and the turnout was exciting. All indications are that we will have a record number of sailors starting practice April 6th with 4 regattas planned for the Spring season. If you know any 8th - 12th graders who would like to practice and/or compete with the team, let us know. Thank you to all of you that re- sponded to our request for someone to pick up our latest Club 420 in North Carolina. It looks like the Dye family will be in the area and will be picking it up. With this latest addition to our fleet, our 6th 420, we will now be able to practice team racing. We are al- ways looking for Lasers and Laser rigs if you know of anyone that has one just sitting and would like to donate it. Thank you all for supporting TACS!!! After the America‟s Cup last month there was a story about the passing at age 100 of Bernard Smith who in 1963 published the book „The 40 Knot Sailboat, Introducing the Aerohydrofoil‟. It piqued my interest and I was able to find a copy on my favorite used book website, www.abebooks.com. Mr. Smith, the Chief Engineer for the Bureau of Naval Weapons, was amazingly ahead of his time and definitely a pioneer in speed sailing. If anyone would like to borrow the book, let me know. (hint - Labatt drafts) Also about the same time I saw an article in H2O Notes about a guy named Tom Speers who worked on the wing controls for the BMW/Oracle team. His website, www.tspeer.com/, is an interesting collection of boats, landyachts, wings, foils, and other high tech „stuff‟ that some of you techno-geeks might enjoy. There is a lot going on in LED lighting for Boats and RVs. If you haven‟t considered converting your light fixtures to LEDs you might want to. The current draw is less than 10% of an incandescent bulb and they don‟t generate any heat. I‟ve got a bunch more sites bookmarked if you‟re interested. USSAILING is offering the official iPhone app for The Racing Rules of Sailing including the USSAILING Prescriptions for just $5.99. Handy search feature puts everything at your fingertips. The Boyne City YC will host a rules seminar on Saturday, May 8th, at the Sommerset Pointe YC (site of the old power plant on the South side of Lake Charlevoix) in Advance led by Debi Schoenherr from Bayview YC. Debi is a longtime competitor, Senior Judge and International Umpire. While this event is promoted as a seminar, Debi likes to reach out to the audience for participation to create a memorable learning experience. “Bring your questions, your scenar- ios, and your „what-if‟s‟. Together we will all learn how much we really don‟t know!” $25 pre-reg/$35 at the door, includes lunch, beverages, and snacks. If you‟d like the super-secret shortcut route to Advance, I can probably be convinced to give it up. (hint - Labatt drafts) Since we are now distributing Waterlines only thru the website, I will no longer provide the links to the webpages I reference, but will em- bed them instead. If you need the full link, let me know. All for this month, hope you can get out and get your bottom prepped. It won‟t be long!!! GRAND TRAVERSE YACHT CLUB WATERLINES FROM THE HELM By Steve Wyckoff, May 2010 Commodore Thank you for all that attended the GTYC 50th Birthday Celebration. We thank our Founders for having the insight to begin our Club and the current members for keeping the tradition moving ahead. The last couple of years have been a challenge but we are all proud of the results.

Spring Clean Up Day saw a hard working group of volunteer members giving back to the Club. Thanks to George, Cheri, and Ian for putting together a list of tasks that mem- bers could look over, choose the one they wanted to get done, and mark it complete when finished. Thank you to all who contributed. Check out the new dinghy/laser area on the south side of the building…well done! The dock crew began installing our dock system and will continue Sunday, May 2 and Saturday, May 8. Any available help would be appreciated.

Sailing season is here!! The It’s Wednesday Night! warm-up race is May 5 with the Spring Series beginning on May 12. Lasers and Interlakes begin their fleet races this month and the Cruisers are getting boats ready for heading north out of the bay. It’s been a long winter….but it is going to be a great summer.

The annual Oyster/Clam Bake is scheduled for Friday, May 7. Dave Hollis will again work his to provide a wonderful seafood feast. Stop by for a great event.

See you at the Club…..

Steve Wyckoff MISC RAMBLINGS ...... PC40 What a great turnout for the recent Founders Day Brunch and the 50th Birthday Party events. Seeing some of the members from the 60s, 70s, and even the 80s was special. Big THANK YOUs to those that put these events together. Fifty years is hard for most of us to imagine, but the history of the Club is being pieced together by Tom Cowell with help from some of the members that were around in the early days. It was great to see the picture boards put together by Reed Frederick (except for one picture - thanks Reed!!!) I first sailed at GTYC in the late 70s as a crewmember with and against some of those that attended and it was great to renew the friendships. GTYC has always had a strong fleet of racer/cruisers and some of the early races were to Beaver and Mackinac Islands. One of my favorites was the Leland race which was run near the longest day of the year. The start was around 4 or 5 on Friday and the course went to South Fox Light, the Crib, and in to Leland, about 70 miles. The sunsets and sunrises were awesome. This year marks the return of another old favorite, the Twin Bay Race, which, as it’s name implies, includes both bays for a total of about 60 miles. For those that have not sailed at night this will be an excellent chance to learn, either as skipper with some experienced crew or as crew on an- other boat. Scheduled for September, at least the water will be warm. The Club has also been home to several strong one-design fleets and has hosted many Districts, several Nation- als, and even a few North American Championship Regattas. In the early years we had a strong Lightning fleet and the late 70s saw the start of one of the first and at one time the largest J/24 fleets in the world. I sailed on many of them until purchasing my own in 1984, the same year that the fleet fell apart. I sailed here in ’84 & ’85, but moved it south to Gull Lake and Muskegon and sailed it there off and on thru ’92. The mid-90s saw the be- ginnings of both the Melges 24 and Interlake fleets. At one time (2000?) the Melges fleet was the largest in the country and we currently have 4 or 5. The Interlakes are very strong with 14 or 15 boats plus TACS has 6 or 7 that are used both on Boardman Lake and the bay. Lasers have been around for what seems forever and have had a presence at GTYC since being introduced in the early 70’s. GTYC was host to the Laser North American Championship in ‘76 which was well attended (150 boats!!!) with some well known sailors including a very young and our own Tom Babel. The Laser fleet has been quite strong in recent years and I’ve been given assurances that it will be this year as well. First event is Saturday, May 15, so get on that hiking bench NOW!!! If you are interested in any of these fleets, let me know. TACS is going strong with the High School Team practicing on Tues/Wed/Thurs afternoons after school from 4 - 6. Stop by and check them out. Entrance to Hull Park is from the corner of Hannah and Woodmere, just south of the Library, or use the new Boardman Lake TART Trail. I was on the water last Thursday helping out and learned something new . . . don’t bring a metal whistle to spring practice!!! Lots of new ideas and programs at TACS this year. Open Sailing Monday thru Friday from 6 pm ‘til dark for season pass holders. We have just or- dered 2 more adaptive sailboats and will be scheduling adaptive sessions 2 nights per week. Glen Rauth is final- izing the details for a Rowing program and we are hoping to get it started this season. If you are interested let Glen know. All of these new programs are causing a need for volunteers at the site. If you are interested in help- ing out, please contact Roxanne Johnson. We are always in need of Laser hulls, parts, rigs, etc. and are also looking for a J/22 or J/24 or something similar to be used on West Bay. If you have a boat to donate or know someone that does, contact Bill Allgaier. We appreciate your support!!! Here’s a couple of techie things for the month. — NAVIONICS AND FUGAWI introduce NAVPLANNER2™ — an atlas of all US coastal , navigable waterways and over 12,000 inland lakes for the home computer. In addition, the software includes the entire Navionics 2010 database of exclusive High-Definition freshwater lakes, surveyed up to one-foot contour intervals. Cost is $129. If you haven't already, you will be checking your bottom soon. . . of your boat, that is. I know nothing about this line of paint, but thought it might be of interest. ePaint Company is committed to "Green Boat Maintenance" by developing and marketing marine coatings that are safer for our environment. ePaint products control grass, slime and barnacles without poisoning our environment. Visit their website at http://www.epaint.com/ to learn more. Order online now using coupon code CCM20 and receive a 20% discount! My favorite is still VC-17. Check w/me or Ken Stepnitz for application advice (a couple of Labatt drafts should do it!!!) All for this month, see you on the water — HIP HIP HOORAY . . . It’s the First of May . . . Naked Sailing Starts Today ! ! ! SOLO Chicago Mackinac Race Cal Karr, Race Committee Chair, Mackinac Island

If you think you have done it all, try this one. The singlehanded solo sailboat race from Chicago to Mackinac Island begins Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 9:00 AM just off Navy Pier. What I can tell you after 42 continuous years of sailing and four solo races this is the most fun I have ever had sailing. This is the most rewarding sailing experience I have ever had. Guess what, no one is going to tell you what to do! Trim, don’t trim, put up the chute, maybe not, tack I don’t know, is that a hole over there, it sure looks like it. Come up, fall off, I just screwed myself...better yet, I think I will have (ONE) good glass of red wine and a 20 min- ute nap and then get into a personal strategy session! Before I do this I better get that chute down while the getting is good. Please visit our web site www.solosailor.org and click on the moving link 2010 Mac Solo Challenge Documents for complete information. There are many other links to view. Please call me at 231.941.4938 with any questions. Do one and you’ll be hooked. It’s a great way to start your summer.

We have three series this season...a two night "pre-season" (June 10th & 17th) followed by about a 7 week "Summer Blowout" series and then a short series to end summer. I predict a new champ this year...as I will be boat hopping/coaching...with an alternate skipper for my TAKE FIVE. Important dates • Our regatta: The Great White Northern Championships will be June 26 & 27. That's right-it is once again an overnighter by popular request of the success of Nationals last year. • West Coast Classic: Hamilin Lake, Ludington Michigan, August 7th.
