SCYC Members Racing Updates

MEXICO UPDATES- Since we went to press so close to the end of the Newport-Cabo race last month, there were a couple updates to the reported finishes. Morgan Larson on the SC70 Holua, finished nd2 , Dylan Watts on the SC70 Grand Illusion finished 3rd, Paul Allen on the RP63 Invis- ible Hand finished th6 , Brent Ruhne on the STP65 Bad Pak finished 12th.

SWITZERLAND - While Morgan hasn’t had a chance to race it formally yet, he had a fun trip last month to Geneva, Switzerland to sea trial (Lake trial) the new Cat, A foiling GC32. “After a fun Helicopter launch we sailed in the snow! It’s a fun boat with tons of potential. After a quick and cold trip to Lake Geneva I headed down for some sea trials of the new TP52 RAN, which I will be joining for the first Med Cup Series in Valencia, Spain in mid May. This year there will be 9 new TP52’s joining the already strong field.”

CARRIBEAN – Brent Ruhne just got back from the Les Voiles de Saint Barth Regatta on the Swan 90 Odin. They were first to finish in all races, but due to an unfriendly rating, their finish on handicap was pretty far down the list. However, Brent related that it was a “fantastic week of rac- ing in the Caribbean.”

CALIFORNIA - Susie Snyder, Walter Oliveri, Warren Sampson, Tom Garside, Beat Naef, Rob Schuyler, and of course, World Champion Dennis Bassano, took themselves off to the Ivanpah dry lake it only mathematically possible to be beaten. We also gave our support to the accelerating May 10 efforts to finally realize the dream of having “Jack and Jill” keelboats for the Club. That committee, led by Rob Schuyler Presentation / raceQs and Chuck Murray with significant Corinthian participation (thank you, Tim Gilmore) is carefully thinking through all May 14 issues, and several members are interested in donating boats. It’s our hope we can make this happen sooner rather than Laser Friday later, providing yet another way for our members young and not so another way to enjoy sailing Monterey Bay. Vice Commodore Report

Many members were helpful in establishing the 2015 Capital Budget. There are a few things each year that must be done. They are in the budget. There is then a long list of projects that have been requested. At the same time we wish to be conservative, so the money will be there to pay off the mortgage. From the long list of requests we select the ones that will improve the operation of the club, and others that in our opinion that will benefit the members the most. Special thanks are due to Greg Haws, Kelly Nesheim and Lou Pambi- anco for all their time and judgment in developing this budget. I was also part of the team. After questions, the Board approved the recommended Capital Budget for (Rear Commodore Barry Keeler prepping for the 2015. Chuck Murray What makes a social calendar exciting is having Vice Commodore a major event! Depending on your age, Easter must rate as a major event and it was nothing short of spectacular at the Santa Cruz Yacht Club this year. To start things off, we had a fantastic buffet of- fered by KISS catering. The first seating was at 10:30 and the second seating was at 12:30 and both seatings were well attended. The food was plentiful and deli- cious. Judy and Tom Webster from the Social Com- mittee created beautiful center pieces complete with colorful candies for people to consume. The candy was

After both seatings, we had an Easter egg hunt for the up to 12 year olds. It was delightful watching the young ones and their excitement upon discovering each new egg. There were prizes for the children who found special marked eggs. I don’t know which was more rewarding to watch: the little ones finding the eggs or the parents and grandparents excitement with the event. Keep an eye out for future events. May 3 is our (Jr. Staff Commodore Barry Whittall and family inaugural Leukemia Cup regatta, be sure to show up, after a succesful Easter Egg Hunt) participate and donate for this special occasion. Cruising Committee

A dozen of us from the Cruising Group had a great lunch at the Pacific Sail Expo! People were bragging nonstop about all the great stuff they bought. A big thanks to Rick and Dorie for setting this up. Coming up is our Spring Dock Party hosted by Katie Wohlstattar ([email protected]). It is on Saturday May 9th. Katie will be sending out the details soon. Our other upcoming events are: Monterey Jazz Festival Nearly Full Moon Sail Saturday and Sunday Sept 18 - 20 Sunday May 31st. The idea is that a bunch of us get on Onward and ride to Capitola and get a mooring an hour or so before the Begonia Festival starts. Then they hail the Capitola Boat and Bait to get a ride ashore and go and watch the Bego- nia Festival. After the festival, folks use the Capitola Boat and Bait dinghy to get back to Onward, have a bunch of drinks and snacks. Then Onward brings everyone back to the Harbor. The cool thing here is you can see the Begonia Festival without dealing with parking and much of the hassle of seeing the festival.

Art and Wine Festival Saturday Sep 13th. The idea here is that the boats that sail to Capi- tola for the Art and Wine festival can meet up either on shore or on someone’s boat and enjoy the music, wine etc.
