CONSERVATION Happy Birthday Selous! Africa’s Oldest Protected Area Celebrates The Selous Game Reserve, in southern Tanzania, is not only Africa’s largest protected area, but also its oldest. It celebrated its 120th birthday on May 7th. Although a portion of the reserve is used for photo-tourism, the majority of it is primarily for sustainable hunting tourism, making it Africa’s largest hunting area. Text and Photos: Dr. Rolf D. Cowboy Up: the American Cowboy in Fact and Fiction Syllabus
FSEM 100 Cowboy Up: The American Cowboy in Fact and Fiction Syllabus Semester Spring 2011 Lecturer Dr. Ron Scheer Email [email protected] Section 34604 Office JEF 261 Phone 213-740-1980 Time Mon 2:00 Office hours TTh 2:00 Fax 213-740-4100 Classroom WPH 201 and by appointment Course description The western has been a genre of American movies and popular literature for over a century. The stories told in this genre reflect values that are embedded in American culture. They are typically about men of strong character who represent a certain kind of moral order, and the story being told is about how they confront and overcome villains, outlaws, and other “bad guys” who are enemies of that order. It can be a black-and-white world of good vs. evil, or it can be a world where there are many shades of gray, so that it’s less easy to tell the difference. This conflict is typically played out on the American frontier, in the late 19th century (1865-1900), during the decades after the American Civil War. It is the era of cowboys, the growth of the cattle industry, the fencing of the open range, the demise of the buffalo herds, the final displacement of the Native American tribes, the building of cross- continental railroads, and rapid settlement of the frontier territories fed by waves of immigration and the availability of free land made possible by the Homestead Acts. The conflict in a western typically involves and is eventually resolved by violence – fistfights, gunfire, sometimes even explosives. -
Life of Frederick Courtenay Selous, D.S.O. Capt
LIFE OF FREDERICK COURTENAY SELOUS, D.S.O. CAPT. 25TH ROYAL FUSILIERS Chapter XI - XV BY J. G. MILLAIS, F.Z.S. CHAPTER XI 1906-1907 In April, 1906, Selous went all the way to Bosnia just to take the nest and eggs of the Nutcracker, and those who are not naturalists can scarcely understand such excessive enthusiasm. This little piece of wandering, however, seemed only an incentive to further restlessness, which he himself admits, and he was off again on July 12th to Western America for another hunt in the forests, this time on the South Fork of the MacMillan river. On August 5th he started from Whitehorse on the Yukon on his long canoe-journey down the river, for he wished to save the expense of taking the steamer to the mouth of the Pelly. He was accompanied by Charles Coghlan, who had been with him the previous year, and Roderick Thomas, a hard-bitten old traveller of the North- West. Selous found no difficulty in shooting the rapids on the Yukon, and had a pleasant trip in fine weather to Fort Selkirk, where he entered the Pelly on August 9th. Here he was lucky enough to kill a cow moose, and thus had an abundance of meat to take him on the long up-stream journey to the MacMillan mountains, which could only be effected by poling and towing. On August 18th he killed a lynx. At last, on August 28th, he reached a point on the South Fork of the MacMillan, where it became necessary to leave the canoe and pack provisions and outfit up to timber-line. -

Bamcinématek Presents Indie 80S, a Comprehensive, 60+ Film Series Highlighting the Decade Between 70S New Hollywood and the 90S Indie Boom, Jul 17—Aug 27
BAMcinématek presents Indie 80s, a comprehensive, 60+ film series highlighting the decade between 70s New Hollywood and the 90s indie boom, Jul 17—Aug 27 Co-presented by Cinema Conservancy The Wall Street Journal is the title sponsor of BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcinématek. Brooklyn, NY/June 11, 2015—From Friday, July 17 through Thursday, August 27, BAMcinématek and Cinema Conservancy present Indie 80s, a sweeping survey of nearly 70 films from the rough-and-tumble early days of modern American independent cinema. An aesthetic and political rebuke to the greed-is-good culture of bloated blockbusters and the trumped-up monoculture of Reagan-era America, Indie 80s showcases acclaimed works like Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise (1984—Jul 18), David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986—Aug 8), and Steven Soderbergh’s sex, lies, and videotape (1989—Aug 14) alongside many lesser- known but equally accomplished works that struggled to find proper distribution in the era before studio classics divisions. Filmmakers including Ross McElwee, William Lustig, Rob Nilsson, and more will appear in person to discuss their work. Like the returning expatriate’s odyssey in Robert Kramer’s four-hour road movie Route One/USA (1989—Aug 16), a sampling of 80s indie cinema comprises an expansive journey through the less-traveled byways of America. From the wintry Twin Cities of the improvised, hilariously profane road trip Patti Rocks (1988—Aug 25) to the psychopath’s stark Chicago hunting grounds in John McNaughton’s Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986—Jul 29) to the muggy Keys of Florida in filmmaker Victor Nuñez’s eco-thriller A Flash of Green (1984—Aug 12), regional filmmakers’ cameras canvassed an America largely invisible to Hollywood. -

FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM COGS108 Final Project Group Members: Yanyi Wang Ziwen Zeng Lingfei Lu Yuhan Wang Yuqing Deng Introduction and Background Movie revenue is one of the most important measure of good and bad movies. Revenue is also the most important and intuitionistic feedback to producers, directors and actors. Therefore it is worth for us to put effort on analyzing what factors correlate to revenue, so that producers, directors and actors know how to get higher revenue on next movie by focusing on most correlated factors. Our project focuses on anaylzing all kinds of factors that correlated to revenue, for example, genres, elements in the movie, popularity, release month, runtime, vote average, vote count on website and cast etc. After analysis, we can clearly know what are the crucial factors to a movie's revenue and our analysis can be used as a guide for people shooting movies who want to earn higher renveue for their next movie. They can focus on those most correlated factors, for example, shooting specific genre and hire some actors who have higher average revenue. Reasrch Question: Various factors blend together to create a high revenue for movie, but what are the most important aspect contribute to higher revenue? What aspects should people put more effort on and what factors should people focus on when they try to higher the revenue of a movie? http://localhost:8888/nbconvert/html/Desktop/MyProjects/Pr_085/FinalProject.ipynb?download=false Page 1 of 62 FinalProject 25/08/2018, 930 PM Hypothesis: We predict that the following factors contribute the most to movie revenue. -
GUNSMOKE TV CAST and DETAILS Premiered
GUNSMOKE TV CAST AND DETAILS Premiered: September 10, 1955, on CBS Rating: TV-PG Premise: This landmark adult Western centered on Marshal Matt Dillon of Dodge City. John Wayne turned down the lead, suggesting James Arness (who remained for its entire run). Originating on radio (with William Conrad as Dillon), it moved to TV in September 1955. Its popularity spawned a number of copycats, but none would enjoy the longevity (and few the consistent quality) of this classic. Airing for 20 years, it's TV's longest running prime-time drama (a record that `Law & Order' is currently chasing).
