The collection dates from 1969-2011 and includes reprints, teaching files, subject files, notebooks, and grant proposals. Creator: Fox, Marye Anne, 1947- Scope and Content of Collection The papers of Marye Anne Fox, seventh chancellor of UC San Diego and National Medal of Science laureate, document her career as a researcher and professor of physical organic chemistry. The collection dates from 1969-2011 and is arranged in five series: 1) REPRINTS, 2) TEACHING FILES, 3) SUBJECT FILES, 4) NOTEBOOKS and 5) GRANT PROPOSALS. SERIES 1: REPRINTS The REPRINTS series contains most of Fox's published scientific articles from 1970-1999, arranged chronologically, including collaborative works with other researchers. Her research in the fields of organic photochemistry and electrochemistry has applications in solar energy, semiconductors, functional polymers, and environmental chemistry. SERIES 2: TEACHING FILES The TEACHING FILES series (1969-1993) includes notes, syllabi, problem sets, exam questions and departmental memoranda used by Fox while teaching advanced organic chemistry and photochemistry at the University of Texas, Austin. The files are arranged by course title. SERIES 3: SUBJECT FILES The SUBJECT FILES series (1981-2011) consists of correspondence and clippings on ethics in scientific research; notes on photochemistry; and materials regarding conferences on organic chemistry. SERIES 4: NOTEBOOKS The NOTEBOOKS series (1988-1998) contains handwritten notebooks on chemistry, group meetings, and research ideas kept by Fox while working at the University of Texas, Austin. The chemistry notebook and the 1998 Research Ideas notebook each have an index at the front of the volume. SERIES 5: GRANT PROPOSALS The GRANTS PROPOSALS series (1989-2004) includes correspondence, progress reports, and grant proposals submitted by Fox to agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy, the Army Research Office, and the Welch Foundation. Most of the proposals are regarding research in organic photochemistry or electrochemistry, and many were created in collaboration with organic chemist James K. Whitesell. The files are arranged by proposal title. Biography Marye Anne Payne Fox was born December 9, 1947 in Canton, Ohio to Charles and Lucille Payne. She earned a B.S. in chemistry at Notre Dame College in 1969, an M.S. at Cleveland State University in 1970, a Ph.D. in chemistry from Dartmouth College in 1974, and did postdoctoral research at the University of Maryland. Joining the faculty at the University of Texas as assistant professor of organic chemistry in 1976, she went on to become Rowland Pettit Centennial Professor, director of the Center for Fast Kinetics Research, Waggoner Regents Chair in chemistry, and vice president for research at the university. From 1998-2004, she served as chancellor and distinguished professor at North Carolina State University, and in 2004, she accepted the positions of chancellor and distinguished professor of chemistry at the University of California, San Diego. Fox was the first permanent female chancellor at both North Carolina State University and at UC San Diego. Fox is known for her research in physical organic chemistry, particularly in the fields of photochemistry and electrochemistry. She has been a Sloan Foundation fellow and a recipient of both the Garvan Medal and the Charles Lathrop Parsons Award for outstanding public service from the American Chemical Society. Fox was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1994, the American Philosophical Society in 1996, and was awarded the National Medal of Science Marye Anne Fox Papers MSS 0764 2 in 2009. She has served on the National Science Board, the U.S. Committee of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. She holds three patents related to her research, and has coauthored textbooks on organic chemistry with her husband, James K. Whitesell. Marye Anne Fox stepped down as chancellor of UC San Diego in 2012, returning to research and teaching. Publication Rights Publication rights are held by the creator of the collection.
